2022 Oscar nominee Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog) has signed on to star alongside Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline in Apple TV+’s upcoming series Disclaimer created by Alfonso Cuarón, which also has Sacha Baron Cohen in talks for a role, Deadline can confirm.
The Ankler was first to report the news. Oscar winner Cuarón is writing, directing and exec producing his first-ever series, which is based on the novel of the same name by Renée Knight. In it, Blanchett will play Catherine Ravenscroft, a successful and respected television documentary journalist whose work has been built on revealing the concealed transgressions of long-respected institutions. When an intriguing novel written by a widower (Kline) appears on her bedside table, she is horrified to realize she is a key character in a story that she had hoped was long buried in the past, one that reveals her darkest secret.

Once you’re in with David O. Russell, you’re really in. The Oscar-nominated director’s next film, buzzy biopic Joy, will reunite him with American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook stars Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, ensuring another round of Oscar nominations for them all. Luckily, though, it won’t be all familiar faces for Russell: Sideways actress Virginia Madsen has just joined the cast, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.
The film, set for a prime awards season release on Christmas Day this year, will focus on Miracle Mop inventor Joy Mangano (Lawrence), who began inventing at a young age and eventually hit it big with the Mop and Huggable Hampers, in addition to more than 100 other patents. As her empire grew, Mangano also juggled the responsibilities of playing single mom to three children.

All the Wilderness is caught somewhere between a terrific short film and a tender, sensitive coming-of-age drama. Without credits, Michael Johnson’s film is 71 minutes long, which is too brief to fully explore the pain and pleasures experienced by young protagonist James Charm (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Meanwhile, given how the stakes are low and the themes repeat throughout, a 30-minute version of the same material could have been more focused and affecting. Alas, the film must cope with a slender running time.
Although his surname is Charm, James is anything but charming. Obsessed with the macabre, he draws sketches of dead birds and insects in his notebook, and also tells the school bully he expects him to die within the next year. (That altercation gives James a black eye.) Mom Abigail (Virginia Madsen) doesn’t know how to deal with her son’s morbidity, especially after the death of her husband.

Perhaps grief haunts so deeply because the understanding or closure one seeks is from the very person that is no longer there. That pain is even more grave when the loss is unexpected or unexplained. Certainly, James (Kodi Smit-McPhee) is left adrift in the wake of his father's death, retreating to his own, inner world of reading "Moby Dick," listening to classical music, and endlessly adding morbid entries to his notebook. When he's not doing that, he takes to the woods surrounding the Portland home where he lives with his mother Abigail (Virginia Madsen), perhaps hoping to be consumed by something bigger than the ache he wears on his face and in almost every action he takes. "All The Wilderness," the feature debut by writer/director Michael Johnson, is certainly big on mood, and admittedly does get plenty of mileage out of its very clear devotion to the films Terrence Malick.

Wild at Heart: Johnson’s Solipsistic, Sincere Coming-of-Age Drama
Initially titled The Wilderness of James when it premiered at the 2014 SXSW Film Festival, Michael Johnson’s directorial debut has been re-titled All the Wilderness, perhaps in an effort to extend its poetic fascination with death into a more universal realm. But the wilderness is a place “where all things go to live…and to die,” our protagonist narrates to us, quoting wisdom from his deceased father, who instilled in his son that ‘each man’s wilderness is his own,’ before he committed suicide in front of his kid. Johnson’s narrative remains a very singular narrative about how tragedy has irreparably tainted one particular adolescent’s coming-of-age tale, which is, for all intents and purposes, otherwise quite uneventful. But Johnson relates how a father’s actions have created toxic ripples within his son’s life. Though performances and tech...

Michael Johnson makes his feature debut with The Wilderness Of James, a film that explores one boy’s attempts at dealing with loss during a tumultuous time in his life. Filled with raw emotionality throughout, the film never feels like a debut, but rather the work of a seasoned veteran. Then again, considering the outstanding performance from Kodi Smit-McPhee anchoring the film, Johnson’s job had to have been a lot easier than it might have been otherwise.
The film picks up a few months months after the death of James’ (Kodi Smit-McPhee) father and he’s struggling to find a way to cope. He goes to a therapist, but that doesn’t give him much help, nor does the possibility of going to a school for gifted kids. Tired of the downtown scene after a weekend of expensive parking, crowds, and shuttle buses, I spent a day at the Alamo Drafthouse Village SXSatellite location. Best known as the narcissistic Dennis Reynolds on It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Glenn Howerton made his first venture into producing features with The Wilderness Of James. The film, which was written and directed by Michael Johnson, premiered this year at South By Southwest and did not disappoint. Between an interesting story and an excellent performance from lead Kodi Smit-McPhee, it was one of my favorites at the festival.
Anyone familiar with my It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia reviews knows that I’m a firm believer in the fact that it’s one of the funniest, wittiest comedies on television right now. Michael Johnson gave himself quite the challenge making “The Wildness of James” his first feature film. Even though it does have a refined, grounded narrative at its core, it also requires Johnson to present that story in hyper real form so that the audience can have access to the title character on a much deeper level, and he really pulls it off. The film focuses on Kodi Smit-McPhee’s James Charm. When his mother (Virginia Madsen) decides that he isn’t coping with his father’s death appropriately, she insists that he see a therapist (Danny DeVito). Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

Apparently “derivative material begets derivative material” as the saying goes as ABC is mulling a spin-off of their Sunday night hit Once Upon a Time. This one would focus on the Mad Hatter character, which has already appeared a half-dozen times on the series played by actor Sebastian Stan. The only problem is Stan is not available for a series commitment, as he’s currently working on Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This would mean, obviously, a recast. The problem I foresee is that viewers who enjoy Stan in the role as the Mad Hatter and maybe follow him if ABC did a spin-off would probably be a bit reluctant to watch it if Stan is not playing him.

Last month, when I reported that Chloe Moretz was in talks to star in The Wilderness Of James, an indie film coming of age tale that was scripted by first time director Michael Johnson, I mentioned the deal was contingent on the schedule of the young actress after she signed on for Kick-Ass 2: Balls To The Wall. Well, Moretz has had to drop out of the project, and it has turned into a great opportunity for Isabelle Fuhrman, who has just signed to take her place. Fuhrman, who’s repped by CAA and Management 360, gets the gig after completing the M. Night Shyamalan-directed After Earth, opposite Will Smith and Jaden Smith. Set in Portland, The Wilderness Of James is the coming of age story about a young boy dealing with absence of his father. Johnson wrote the script. Fuhrman plays the role of Val opposite Kodi Smitt-McPhee.
