Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air” is the third collaboration from the team behind HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Trio Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg produced the nine-part World War II epic series, which spotlights the men who fought in the 8th Air Force, specifically the men of the 100th Bomb Group. The vivid and vital story finds roots in the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller.
The crew of a typical Eighth Air Force heavy bomber plane included ten men — a pilot and his co-pilot flying the B17, the navigator and the bombardier in the machine’s nose, the flight engineer behind the pilot, the radio operator, two waist gunners, a ball turret gunner and a tail gunner. Not to mention the men who strategized from the bases, the plane engineers and Tuskegee airmen or Royal Airforce pilots who feature in this story.

Film Bridge founder and CEO Ellen Wander will partner with Corrigan and Boorman to produce two features, heist thriller Underground and gritty action thriller Assassins Club. Assassins Club centers on a man offered a contract to kill seven people from around the globe. The targets, in turn, are also assassins with contracts to kill him. The only way out is to leave a...

Looks like Ridley Scott has found a comic book that he wants to adapt into a feature film. The director is currently in talks with Fox to direct a film based on Queen and Country, the Eisner award-winning graphic novel by Greg Rucka.
Queen and Country is a spy thriller that is set in a fictional British Secret Intelligence Service. The story centers on an operative named Tara Chace, "a top British intelligence agent who is used as bait to draw out an international terrorist after an attack in London."
I've never read the comic, but I love a good spy thriller! This seems like it will be a great project for Scott, who most recently directed the fantastic film All The Money in the World. Scott has also been in talks with Disney to direct The Merlin Saga.

When Taylor Swift’s music video for “Wildest Dreams” debuted during the MTV Video Music Awards, I wondered if the uncomfortable undertones of British Colonialism would ping the Internet’s controversy radar. It took a few days, but it finally happened. And — as always with a thorny issue like white imperialism — the lines were drawn in deep in the sand. On NPR, native Kenyan and Ugandan authors Viviane Rutabingwa and James Kassaga Arinaitwe discussed the sting of seeing the fantasy of white colonial Africa play out yet again. Swift has played dress-up in loosely defined historical time periods before. “Love Story” ostensibly takes place in medieval times while “Mean” oscillates between Vaudeville and the 1950s. So without any context — thanks public education! — for exactly how much the pop culture ideal of early 20th-century Africa is whitewashed, the glamour of playing Elizabeth Taylor Light™ in an “exotic” location probably (egregiously) seemed like harmless fun.

Cate Blanchett gives a wicked masterclass in scene stealing, Alan Rickman’s period romance fails to ignite, and John Boorman gets nostalgic again in Queen and Country
Do girls really dream of being Cinderella (Disney, U)? She’s a bit of a damp dishcloth, meekly accepting her step-family’s abuse before passively awaiting a prince who can only remember her by shoe size. Kenneth Branagh’s endearing, icing-slathered, live-action Disney revival doesn’t do much to sass Cinders up; it’s Cate Blanchett’s regally wicked stepmother you’d rather get to know. Resplendently attired throughout in Joan Crawford chic, Blanchett single-handedly makes this update compelling. Her devastatingly offhand way with a passive-aggressive put-down is a consistent catty joy, but the frayed-nerve desperation and vulnerable sense of independence she brings to proceedings makes her more than a standard fairytale gorgon. The film is worth watching for its pleasurable frills and...

We’ve all got too much on our plate. On top of that, pop culture enthusiasts like us are enjoying a surfeit of geekiness. Some would argue that there are too many excellent comics, movies and TV shows available today. We all have to pick and choose. My co-worker, Kris Longo, the entrepreneurial wizard who runs Geek Riot Media, has been heard to say “I’m not taking on any new series” now and again. He has a maturity (that I lack) to be able to limit his fictional intake at any given time. And who can blame him?
But despite all this, I think the summer is the perfect time to dive into in a new beach book. No matter how busy you are, how many problems you have or how overdue that oil change is, there’s something magical about getting lost in a summer beach book. And...

The day monster kids have dreaded for some time has arrived. Mournful, nostalgic, and melancholy – it’s the end of an era for more than one generation of horror fans. It seemed like Christopher Lee would live through all eternity, but unlike some of the characters he played, there’s no bringing him back to life this time. He made it to 93 and went out on a high note, appearing in the final Hobbit film just this past winter. He had an amazing career of fantastic performances and remains the greatest villain actor in film history. Rip to the last classic horror star and thank you for all the monster memories.

John Boorman: "the relationship between memory and imagination is very mysterious.” Photo: Richard Mowe
John Boorman, the British director who made some of cinema’s most seminal films (Point Blank, Deliverance, Excalibur, Leo the Last) has returned to the fray at 82 with Queen And Country, an autobiographical companion piece to his Oscar winning Hope And Glory.
Richard Mowe: How close is the film to your memories of the time and did you almost become an accidental film-maker?
John Boorman: Very close. All the incidents in the film occurred to me and all the characters were people I knew and met at the time. When I came out of the Army I got a job as a trainee film editor. Queen and Country is John Boorman’s belated sequel to his autobiographical Hope and Glory (1987). The first film was based on his experiences growing up in the London suburbs during the Blitz. The new one starts in 1952, just as Boorman’s fictional alter ego Bill Rohan is about to begin his National Service. By then, his family had moved to a house on the river Thames, near Shepperton Film Studios.

John Boorman first made his name as a filmmaker to be reckoned with upon the release of 1967’s Point Blank, one of the seminal films of that decade. Classics such as Deliverance (1972), Excalibur (1981) and The Emerald Forest (1985) followed, with 1987’s Hope and Glory, Boorman’s personal memoir of growing up in Ww II London during the Blitz, being one of his career high points, garnering five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, as well as winning a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture (comedy) and sweeping that year’s BAFTAs in every major category.
2015 finds John Boorman, now 82, releasing what he says might be his swan song as a filmmaker, Queen and Country, the long-awaited sequel to Hope and Glory. The film finds Boorman’s alter ego Bill Rohan (Callum Turner) serving in the British army during the Korean War,...

Tour of Duty: Boorman Returns to Autobiographical Elements
Now at 82 years of age, British auteur John Boorman returns with Queen and Country his first feature since 2006. It is a follow-up to one of the director’s most cherished titles, Hope and Glory (1987), which documents war-torn England through the eyes of a child as his family survives the blitz. Though it’s been nearly thirty years, Boorman sets this follow-up chapter only nine years in the future, leaving behind the horrors of WWII for the Cold War ethics of the Korean conflict. Much like he managed with the film’s predecessor, Boorman achieves success by making the film a personal, insular story about a small group of characters’ experiences. The powerful emotional possibilities of the child’s perspective is left behind, now a young man discovering who he wants to be and what values he wishes to cherish. This makes for a more reserved,...

At a retrospective at New York's Film Forum, including the baroque thriller, Point Blank, the Appalachian nightmare, Deliverance, the bizarre, sci-fi adventure, Zardoz, and his epic Arthurian legend, Excalibur, Director John Boorman premiered Queen And Country, the sequel to his semi-autobiographical 1987 opus, Hope and Glory. In a short but sweet chat, Director Boorman spoke with us about the magic of Lee Marvin, directing Mifune, and wrangling the sexual tension between Merlin and Morgana Le Fay. The Lady Miz Diva: You're here for the Film Forum's retrospective of your work, but also for the premiere of your newest film, Queen and Country, the sequel to your 1987 film, Hope and Glory. What brought you back to that autobiographical story now, nearly thirty years later?John Boorman: ...

This is a reprint of our review from the 2014 Cannes Directors' Fortnight. Of all the many, many sequels to land in theaters this year, by far the most unexpected is "Queen And Country." It follows up a film released 27 years ago, and which was never more than a modest hit. It doesn't have superheroes or dragons or aging action heroes. It's an autobiographical period piece set in 1950s England, and it's helmed not by some music-video upstart or Sundance breakout, but by an 81-year-old filmmaker who hasn't made a movie in eight years. And yet, while we suppose that "Horrible Bosses 2" or "Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb" could end up surprising, we'd wager that "Queen And Country,” John Boorman's belated continuation of his Best Picture-nominated 1987 film "Hope & Glory," and which screened in Cannes as part of Directors' Fortnight this week, will end up being better...

A new trailer has arrived online for Mortdecai, David Koepp’s comedy caper starring Johnny Depp as the titular roguish art dealer. When a priceless painting is stolen from British shores, the government turns to our man Mortdecai to return it, citing Queen and country as the necessary motivation for doing so. However, Mortdecai is in a bit of financial bother himself, and has other ideas for where the painting might end up once recovered… Take a look at the new trailer, below… Ludicrously Ott it might be, but there’s...

James Franco has posted an Instagram photo of himself shooting his film adaptation of the novel "Zeroville" alongside cast mates Seth Rogen and Will Ferrell. Rogen plays Viking Man, a character who is a thinly-disguised take on legendary writer/director John Milius. Ferrell's role is unknown, but he looks kind of like he's doing a take on producer Robert Evans.
