Lives of historical figures often get cinematic treatment to tell sweeping tales of real life events, and Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice captures former president Donald Trump in a key moment before the 2024 presidential election. Starring Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn and Maria Bakalova as Trump’s first wife Ivanka, the film marks the latest in a catalog of films that explore the lives of political people. From United States Presidents to their wives and First Ladies, to Supreme Court Justices to scientists and brilliant minds, nobody is off limits, especially if the stories are triumphant. Others have more tragic endings.

Today, Disney+ revealed the trailer and key art for Out of My Mind in partnership with World Cerebral Palsy Day, a global movement celebrated on Oct. 6. Out of My Mind, a Disney Original movie based on the bestselling novel by Sharon M. Draper, premiered earlier this year at Sundance Film Festival and arrives Nov. 22 on Disney+.
Melody Brooks, a sixth grader with cerebral palsy, has a quick wit and a sharp mind, but because she is non-verbal and uses a wheelchair, she is not given the same opportunities as her classmates.
When a young educator notices her student’s untapped potential and Melody starts to participate in mainstream education, Melody shows that what she has to say is more important than how she says it.
The film stars newcomer Phoebe-Rae Taylor as Melody, alongside acclaimed actors Rosemarie DeWitt, Luke Kirby, Michael Chernus, Courtney Taylor, and Judith Light. Jennifer Aniston portrays Melody’s inner voice.

With Alien: Romulus, Cailee Spaeny finds herself up against an iconic menagerie of monsters. As she tells us, though, she's always been drawn to the dark.
Cailee Spaeny came out of nowhere, and suddenly she is everywhere.
Maybe she broke your heart in HBO’s Mare Of Easttown as the teenage mother lured into the woods to die. She was in Alex Garland’s philosophical sci-fi series Devs as tech genius Lyndon, and starred in Garland’s intense gut-punch of a film, Civil War. Most likely you will know her as the lead in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination: she was the actor brave enough to take on a role that would not only be heavily scrutinised, but would also require her to apply cat-eyeliner, in one take, without a mirror. Her characters are memorable because they exist at the extremes of human experience,...

When the original Knives Out movie was released by Lionsgate in 2019, the whodunnit starring Daniel Craig as the southern P.E. Benoit Blanc, was either doomed to fail or become a smashing success. The latter happened, as the ensemble cast full of big names made Knives Out one of the best films of the year, ending up with numerous accolades and nominations, with many going so far as to claim that it had revived the whodunnit genre. The sequel, Glass Onion, was also well-received, but more because of its political and social messages than for the plot, which was more or less feeble and unworthy of the original. But, what is important is that Glass Onion also featured an ensemble cast, and it seems that the upcoming third movie, Wake Up Dead Man, will also follow in these footsteps.

Keep your big-budget extravaganzas and intellectual properties! These days, Hollywood actors are breathlessly lining up to join the Benoit Blanc Cinematic Universe. Ever since Rian Johnson singled-handedly revived the big screen whodunnit with 2019's "Knives Out," the mid-budget murder-mystery series has become the hottest destination for rising stars, A-listers, and under-sung veterans of the industry to flex their acting muscles as the various colorful characters that occupy this world. Even the property's shift from the theatrical market to the streaming landscape three years later with Netflix's "Glass Onion" wasn't enough to deter folks from flocking to these movies like they're the next "Dune" sequel.
Following the announcement of Johnson's third "Knives Out Mystery" last month (now officially titled "Wake Up Dead Man"), it's become a daily guessing game trying to figure out who will sign on to match wits with Daniel Craig's sharp-witted Southern sleuth Blanc next.

Rian Johnson is collecting stars for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, like Hideo Kojima scanning celebrities for cameos in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and the upcoming horror game Od. Johnson’s Knives Out 3 is chock full of Hollywood heavy-hitters, with Josh Brolin being the latest name added to the pile. The third chapter of Johnson’s whodunit series, Wake Up Dead Man, finds Daniel Craig reprising the role of Detective Benoit Blanc with Josh O’ Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, and Mila Kunis rounding out the cast.
Plot details remain a mystery, though production for Knives Out 3 begins in the U.K. in early June. From his script, Rian Johnson directs Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. He’s also producing with his T-Street studio partner, Ram Bergman. The first film in the series, Knives Out,...

I’ve watched enough Doctor Who to know time is a complicated construct with rules fluctuating from one interpretation to the next. Thankfully, Rhys Darby’s Casper has time travel all figured out in Relax, I’m From the Future, a new time-traveling comedy that finally breaks the multiversal merry-go-round we’ve been riding for the past few years. In today’s exclusive Relax, I’m From the Future clip, Casper dismisses the Butterfly Effect and misinformation about multiple realities.
The scene finds Casper and Holly (Gabrielle Graham) discussing multiversal misnomers in a dimly lit diner over piping hot mugs of jitter juice. Casper explains how there’s only one reality, and that time is more like a mushy blob than anything we’ve seen in movies. Doc Brown lied to us, folks! Oh, the humanity! While branching paths in the timeline exist, they eventually converge in the same direction, leading toward a pre-determined future.

When he’s not pining for Blackbeard’s embrace on Our Flag Means Death or reprimanding werewolves for using foul language, Rhys Darby fights for the future of humankind! Blue Fox Entertainment‘s Relax, I’m From The Future trailer is here to tickle your ribs after the long Labor Day weekend. The sci-fi comedy hails from Luke Higginson for his feature directorial debut. In addition to operating the camera, Higginson wrote the screenplay and edited the film inspired by his short film of the same name that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 10 years ago.
In the Relax, I’m From The Future trailer, Darby stars as Casper, a time traveler trapped in the past who befriends Holly (Gabrielle Graham), a jaded drifter. They exploit his knowledge of the future, oblivious to the consequences they have set in motion, while a more competent time traveler, Doris (Janine Theriault), tries to stop them.

In space, no one can hear you scream ... but the newest installment in the classic horror franchise has just added its next would-be victim, anyway.
We've known that the next "Alien" movie would take a pretty major pivot away from Ridley Scott's (tragically still-incomplete) prequel series, which started with "Prometheus" and continued with "Alien: Covenant," revolving around Michael Fassbender's android with a god complex, David. Directed by Fede Alvarez, the filmmaker behind the 2013 "Evil Dead" remake and 2016's Stephen Lang-starring "Don't Breathe," this new untitled "Alien" film will instead take a different path entirely with new characters and a new release platform, too -- straight to streaming on Hulu.
Today, however, we now know who's been approached to portray the lead of this still-untitled franchise continuation. According to Deadline, actor Cailee Spaeny is currently "in talks" to star in the next "Alien" movie. The young actor has previously...

Have you noticed that, when there’s a major scripted film about a real person from history, there’s often a documentary to go along with it at the same time? One of the very first articles I wrote for this site was about Rbg and On the Basis of Sex, where the former was clearly the superior product. Recently, Being the Ricardos opened in theaters and then quickly to Amazon Prime. The movie looks at a (fictionalized) tempestuous week for the TV power couple. The documentary on the same couple, from director Amy Poehler, zooms out to look at their entire story, offering a good amount of added context.
This film’s title gives away its focus, which is that the lives of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were so intertwined, even after they were no longer married, that it’s impossible to truly separate them.

News arrived September 21 that Kathryn Hahn is set to play Joan Rivers in an upcoming Showtime limited series. While fans rejoiced for the “WandaVision” Emmy nominee on social media, Sarah Silverman said on the most recent episode of her self-titled podcast (via Page Six) that Hahn’s casting is only the latest example of Hollywood’s “Jewface” problem. Silverman is referring to the practice of casting non-Jews in Jewish roles.
“There’s this long tradition of non-Jews playing Jews, and not just playing people who happen to be Jewish but people whose Jewishness is their whole being,” Silverman said. “One could argue, for instance, that a Gentile [a non-Jew] playing Joan Rivers correctly would be doing what is actually called ‘Jewface.’”
Silverman continued, “It’s defined as when a non-Jew portrays a Jew with the Jewishness front and center, often with makeup or changing of features, big fake nose, all the New York-y or Yiddish-y inflection.

This review of “How It Ends” was first published after its January 2021 premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
The cheeriest movie ever made about Armageddon, “How It Ends” started as a way to be productive during the pandemic and ended up as a cameo-studded lark that also manages to be a touching examination of the regrets we carry around. Writer-directors Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones keep things light on this scenic tour of Los Angeles by foot, but they also manage to bump up against some big ideas without letting their comic tone get too blue.
The film premiered in January at the virtual Sundance Film Festival, where Wein and Lister-Jones have spent a fair amount of time in the past, and it’s an endearing Sundance bonbon: quirky but not annoying, charming but not cloying, slight but in a good way. Wein and Lister-Jones, who occasionally direct indies together...

[The following story contains spoilers for The Mosquito Coast and The Leftovers.]
Fresh off its season two renewal, The Mosquito Coast star Justin Theroux is already anticipating the future of his Apple TV+ series, which is based on his uncle Paul Theroux’s novel of the same name. The series chronicles an idealistic inventor and enigmatic fugitive named Allie Fox (Theroux) who uproots his family in order to seek refuge on the Mosquito Coast of Nicaragua and Honduras. With season one ending where the novel and the 1986 Harrison Ford and Peter Weir movie begin, Theroux explains the utility of saving the Fox family’s arrival on the Mosquito Coast for season two.
“It’s not a disingenuous thing to say or premise, but season one was really built as sort of a prequel. We needed a motivating force to get them out of the country in order to serialize it,” Theroux tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So...

Apple TV+’s “The Mosquito Coast” is the third project between Justin Theroux and casting director Victoria Thomas after “The Leftovers” and 2018’s “On the Basis of Sex,” and Thomas loves reconnecting with not just Theroux but any previously cast actor.
“They kind of become old friends in an old way. It’s kind of interesting to try to cast them at different points in their career and cast around them at different points in their career. I’ve been around a while and Justin’s been around a while so I remember his auditions from back in the day, so it’s kinda good that we’re both here and haven’t been kicked out of the business,” Thomas jokes to Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: TV Casting Directors panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
