After the success of Sacred Games and Mirzapur, the Hindi region of the Ott space was filled with all kinds of episodic crime dramas. Off the top of my head, we got Delhi Crime, Hasmukh, Your Honor, Undekhi, Flesh, Aashram, A Simple Murder, Dark 7 White, and more. Paatal Lok managed to stand out, but since it was backed by an insanely talented star cast and a team of brilliant directors and writers, its success didn’t come off as a surprise. But the crime drama show that floored me was Mithya. Sure, it had stellar actors like Huma Qureshi and Parambrata Chatterjee in it and was being helmed by Rohan Sippy. However, everything depended on a newcomer, Avantika Dassani, and boy did she deliver in spades. The writing of her character was absolutely diabolical, and the cold way in which she went about the misty mountains of Darjeeling executing...

Back in the day, crime dramas usually used to have corrupt cops. And even if the protagonist was a member of any law enforcement authority, they used to punch up instead of down. In case you’ve forgotten due to the Singham franchise’s recent trashy entries, the first one was actually about catching a corrupt politician, not doing the bidding of one. While movies like Ugly, Raman Raghav 2.0, Paan Singh Tomar, and Sonchiriya tried to show the real face of the law, films like Talaash, Mardaani (and its sequel), Raees, Dabangg (the entire trilogy), Murder Mubarak, Rautu ka Raaz, Khakee: The Bihar Chapter, Delhi Crime, and even the highly revered Article 15 kept portraying the police as the bastion of justice and righteousness. That said, slowly but steadily, directors and writers are starting to realize again that maybe celebrating the khaki uniform isn’t a good idea because it has some real-life consequences.

New Delhi, March 7 (Ians) Despite being an acclaimed TV actress who’s best known for her character Angoori Bhabhi, Shubhangi Atre, has experienced all the problems a single mother has to face in a patriarchal society.
If she has been able to live through all that, it is because of her ability to fight back odds, a quality she thanks her parents for.

Talking to Ians, Atre, who plays Angoori Bhabhi in the popular sitcom ‘Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain’, said she celebrates Women’s Day “every day” because she is a single mother.
“We are three sisters and it was from our father that we inherited the spirit of fighting back,” Atre said.
“My father never let us feel we are lesser than men.

In the plethora of content available for audiences, very few characters make a mark in the audience’s mind, and seldom, it is a female character, especially in a cop role. However, with Richie Mehta helming a project, a trend seems to be emerging with a female character at the heart of it, be it Vartika Chaturvedi in ‘Delhi Crime’ or Mala Jogi in ‘Poacher’. Known for his signature style of investigative storytelling, Richie Mehta develops his characters to match the pace of his engaging narratives.
While ‘Poacher’ is a perfect example of an ensemble show, the character of Forest Range Officer Mala Jogi truly stands out, and played aptly by highly acclaimed and appreciated actor Nimisha Sajayan.
As a forest range officer in the Kerala Forest Department, Mala (played by Nimisha) is deeply committed to combating wildlife crime. This commitment is aggravated due to her father’s past involvement in wildlife crime.

A first trailer has been unveiled for Pakistani-u.S. director Iram Parveen Bilal’s Pakistan-set “Wakhri: One of a Kind,” which will have its world premiere at the upcoming Red Sea Film Festival.
Bilal was named one of the directors to watch by the Alliance of Women Directors in 2020. Her previous film, “I’ll Meet You There,” was in the Grand Jury competition at SXSW in 2020 and was banned on its release in Pakistan.
“Wakhri” follows a widowed school teacher in Pakistan who becomes a viral sensation overnight when she accidentally unleashes her unabashed opinions on social media. This newfound fame as an unlikely influencer comes with its own challenges as she has to navigate archaic mindsets and secret identities while raising her 10-year-old son in a world where women’s rights to having a voice and owning space, physical or online, are a constant challenge.

On legendary writer Amrita Pritam’s birth anniversary, Rasika Dugal has expressed her heartfelt wish to portray the iconic wordsmith’s life journey in a movie, if such an opportunity arises. Rasika said: “Amrita Pritams writings, to my mind, talk about romance and revolution in the same breath. There is a sadness, a sense of longing, a passion, a calm anger, a questioning and an imagination in her words which is never too conscious of itself and hence really hits home.”
“I have been very moved by her poetry and very intrigued by her biographies. Here is a woman who lived life on her own terms- acknowledged her obsessions and passions and nurtured them fearlessly. It would be a dream come true for me to get an opportunity to portray her if a film about her is ever made. I have been manifesting this for quite some time. I hope the universe is listening.

Within 24 hours of its release, Kohrra has become one of the most riveting murder mysteries in the Ott space. A Netflix original that takes the audience through rural Punjab, which is ravaged by drug menace, the constant divide between the rich and the poor, corruption, homophobia, and inherent patriarchy. All this forms a headless monster that becomes too difficult to fight. Kohrra touches upon all these topics in a manner that would disconcert the audience.
Many shows in the past few years have forayed into the murder investigative genre because it gives a perspective on how real-life murder investigations are carried out and what factors influence them. Stories in this genre also let the audience understand society in general and how they perceive things around them. Below are some of the web series in the murder investigation genre that could draw parallels to what we’ve seen in Kohrra.

We all must admit that well-made murder investigation stories will always blow your mind. If packaged and delivered properly, it is an ideal way to spend an afternoon understanding the nuances of a case and what goes on behind the scenes. Lately, there have been plenty of tales in this genre from various regions of the country, which helps the audience understand the local police and the native culture in depth. We have had Disney’s Kerala Crime Files and Shaitan, Amazon’s Suzhal: The Vortex, and Netflix’s Delhi Crime take the audience down roads that were seldom chosen by filmmakers in the past. The new Netflix original Kohrra, created by Gunjit Chopra and Diggi Sisodia and co-created by Sudip Sharma of Paatal Lok fame, brings you the story of a murder that shakes up a small town, putting the police under constant pressure ever since to catch the culprit.
