She demands that Guy give her $250,000 for his freedom. The Lord girls plot with the Wilson girls and their older brother Steve, with whom Jane Lord is in love. They want to have Sybil declared incompetent so that Guy will have grounds for an American divorce. All of their schemes fail and the girls decide that the only thing that will divert Sybil from her extortion purpose is if she becomes involved with a man even richer than Guy. To this end they invent a fictitious Argentine, name him "Don Pablo" after a name they see on a cigar wrapper. They inveigle Steve Wilson to impersonate this South American millionaire who is to sweep Sybil off her feet. Later, a Buenos Aires millionaire named Don Pablo is greatly surprised when he reads in a newspaper that Guy Barton is suing his wife Sybil for divorce, and naming him co-respondent, and he decides to fly to New York and check this out.

John Barton (Neil Hamilton), supposedly a respectable citizen, works with "His Excellency" (Rudolph Anders), a mysterious leader of a gang of saboteurs, intent on destroying the Dobe Hills Oil Company oil fields in Texas. Tom teams up with Sally Crane (Pauline Moore), a reporter who witnessed his father's murder, and Mexican officer Lt. Pedro Garcia (Duncan Renaldo). The agents are working across the border in both countries with destroying the saboteurs' hideouts being their goal. One of the targets of the gang of saboteurs is an invention by Professor Nelson (Joseph Forte) who has developed a new type of aviation fuel. Tom protects the professor, riding aboard a train as his bodyguard. foiling the plot to kidnap the inventor. When rumors spread that the new aviation fuel is dangerous, Tom and Sally set out in an aircraft to prove the fuel is safe. When Pedro learns that Tom's aircraft is rigged with a time bomb, he warns him in time for Sally and Tom to parachute to safety. The saboteurs plan to destroy the Whitney Dam would flood the oil fields in Texas, and when Sally finds one of their hideouts, Tom has to rescue her. Barton and his gang finally get their hands on the formula for the special aviation fuel and set out in a dirigible flown by "His Excellency". Their attack on the oil fields is thwarted when Tom and Pedro crash their aircraft into the dirigible, killing the gang. The two lawmen parachute to safety and are later honored by the Texas Rangers for their bravery.
- Chapter One MURDER ON THE SANTA FE TRAIL - Mesquite banker Calvin Drake (Harry Worth) plans to profit from the Santa Fe Railroad's acquisition of right-of-way by gaining control of the land in the territory. In the ensuing war of intimidation against the ranchers, Ira Withers (Edward Cassidy) is killed and Red Ryder (Don 'Red' Barry) and his father, Colonel Tom Ryder (William Farnum), form an organization to drive the gunmen and outlaws out of the territory. Colonel Ryder is killed by One-Eye Chapin (Bob Kortman) and Red vows vengeance. Sheriff Dade (Carleton Young) is in league with the Drake faction, including Ace Hanlon (Noah Barry). The Duchess (Maude Pierce Allen), Red's aunt, is about to lose her ranch. Red learns of a plan to dynamite a dam providing the water supply, and saves Beth Andrews (Vivian Austin), daughter of the former sheriff, Luke Andrews (Lloyd Ingrahan) who was also murdered by Drake's men.

What's worse is the fact that Paula knows that Clarice is still married to an equally irresponsible gigolo. Paula learns that the man Clarice married, Stephen Cormack, has skipped the country and his lawyer, thinking that Paula is Clarice, offers the older woman $5000 to annul the marriage. Paula's lawyer convinces her to pretend she's Cormack's husband until he can get Clarice's marriage annulled. Paula moves into Cormack's house and discovers he has two teen-aged children who consider her a gold-digger after their father's fortune. Meanwhile, Clarice's husband refuses to have their marriage annulled and tries to blackmail Paula into giving him to $10,000 for his silence.
- Talbot uses a phony land grant to rule thirteen million acres, taxing everyone heavily and evicting those who won't pay. The Three Mesquiteers becomes mysterious "night riders" to fight this evil.
- A circus owner, for sentimental reasons, won't sell her ranch. Her business partners secretly sabotage the circus to force a sale but her neighbors, The Three Mesquiteers, hope to thwart their plan.
- Pappy, the manager of the Farmdale orphanage, appropriates five thousand dollars of the taxpayers' money to enroll his charges in a 4-H project that could make the orphanage self-sufficient. This infuriates Hiram Crabtree and Sam Spitz, who profit from selling supplies to the orphanage and therefore have no desire to see it become self-sufficient. Consequently, Crabtree and Spitz charge Pappy with misappropriation of funds and demand that he repay the money immediately. Just when things look bad for Pappy, he learns that he has inherited a nightclub and goes to the city to investigate. There he finds that the club is insolvent and that the performers are demanding their salaries. Pappy suggests that they come to Farmdale to work for their wages, and when the performers learn of the plight of the orphanage, they offer to stage a show to recoup the shortage in funds. Crabtree and Spitz, still trying to retain control of the orphanage, invoke a fire ordinance to prevent the show from being staged in a barn. To invalidate the ordinance, the orphans set fire to a haystack, and as the fire engines speed toward the fire, the youngsters chop down the bridge, stranding the trucks at the barn. The presence of the fire trucks offsets the fire hazard, and the show goes on. After Mrs. Uppington, a local dowager, exposes the motives of Spitz and Crabtree, the orphans continue to work on their 4-H project with the promise that they will be self-sufficient by the fall.
- Canadian Tom Merritt has discovered a substance, Compound X, that will cure infantile paralysis, which he extracts from a mine at Caribou, Canada. A country at war with Canada (unnamed because while Canada and the British Empire were at war with Germany, the USA "officially" wasn't in 1940) discovers that Compound X also contains magnetic properties which will make their mines effective against the British fleet, and dispatch one of their intelligence officers, John Kettler, to work undercover to ensure a steady stream of Compound X for the Fatherland. RCMP Major Ross King is killed in a fray against Kettler's henchmen, and his son, RCMP Sergeant Dave King continues on in his place in command of the Mountie post. The foreign agents open a "sham" sanitarium, supposedly to help paralysis victims, but actually to ship the gathered quantities of Compound X abroad to their warring country. Sergeant King discovers the fraud and exposes "Dr. Shelton", the sham head of the hospital. The Mounties also secure some fuse caps which will provide proof that Kettler and his men are saboteurs. In an effort to recover the fuse caps, the enemy agents kidnap Linda Merritt, sister of RCMP Corporal Tom Merritt,Jr.. King and the Mounties eventually put an end to the enemy agents in chapter 12, "Code of the Mounted", but not without a great personal sacrifice by one of their own.

Jeff saves a drunken Stu's job by covering convicted racketeer Houseman's escape from prison. Jeff goes to Houseman's sister for a scoop and witnesses the murder of Houseman and an innocent young child. While grateful to Jeff, Stu thinks Jeff is too decent to be a reporter and sends him on a fake story, which results in an angry Archer demoting Jeff. On his own, Jeff goes to the courthouse to see the trail of Marques, accused of Houseman's murder. Jeff, who speaks Spanish, hears the translator, Olmeda, falsely state that Marques confesses to the killing. Jeff tells Archer that he has a story. The problem is that because of the fake story, nobody believes him now.
- Disbanded Texas Rangers are gathered together to help the U.S. Cavalry put an end to marauding outlaws.
- The conflict between a railroader and a stage line owner is being aggravated by bad guys who are sabotaging both sides. Roy and Gabby mediate the conflict and expose the bad guys.
- Tom Logan is a railroad detective. Tom takes it upon himself to halt the activities of his crooked brother Duke. Duke and his henchman have stolen an entire gold train, including the passengers. These bad guys have stopped the train and have it backed into lead into a long-since-abandoned dead-end tunnel. Nightclub singer Kay Stevens is one the passengers who requires rescuing by Tom.

- Gangster Charlie McCormick despairs as his young brother Bobby lays near death and vows to break the quarantine of the ocean liner Pacific Queen in order to retrieve the iron lung Bobby needs. Meanwhile, newspaper editor Lonigan searches for reporter Slim Torrence, because Slim is friends with Tom Niles, the customs officer on the verge of cracking a whiskey smuggling case. Lonigan is about to send another reporter to cover the story when Della Parrish, the publisher's daughter, assures him that she can locate Slim. With the help of Slim's young photographer, Willie Sing, Della finds Slim in a waterfront dive, and Willie and Slim sneak aboard the Pacific Queen to find Niles. Niles hints that McCormick is the head of the smuggling ring and promises Slim an exclusive when he breaks the story the next day. Slim and Willie then try to leave, but are held up by the quarantine. They hide in Bobby's iron lung, which McCormick's men Lefty and Spider get past the quarantine. On shore, the iron lung is hijacked and held for ransom by gangster Otto Miller. Although McCormick agrees to pay the $50,000 ransom, Slim and Willie steal the iron lung from Miller's gang and take it to the hospital. There, Slim finds out that Niles was murdered aboard the ocean liner, and he suspects McCormick. The next day, Slim and Willie return to the ship, where they find the knife used in the murder. Slim is attacked by the killer, one of McCormick's men named John Colley, who was posing as a ship's steward. Slim traces Colley to McCormick's nightclub, where he overhears McCormick plan on killing Colley and framing Miller for it. Slim goes to Miller's hideout, and after warning him of the scheme, takes him to Della's house. Della, angry over being stood up by Slim once again, has invited McCormick for dinner. She is unaware of McCormick's true nature and is horrified when the two gangsters have a gun battle, during which Miller is killed. McCormick is freed after pleading self-defense, but tells his gang to abandon the latest shipment of smuggled whiskey as he is under surveillance. Lefty and Spider are dissatisfied with the idea and scheme with boat captain McTeague to double-cross McCormick by transporting the whiskey directly into a warehouse themselves, by means of a pump. Slim and Willie find out about the double-cross and go to the warehouse, where Slim is captured after sending Willie to get the police. Slim is taken aboard the ship, while Lefty goes to McCormick's house. When Bobby overhears Lefty planning to murder Slim, and he calls McCormick's club. McCormick tells Bobby that nothing can be done, but after Bobby reminds his brother that Slim saved his life, McCormick rushes to the ship. McCormick rescues Slim as he is about to be steamed to death in the hold, but he is fatally wounded by Lefty. The police arrive and the gang is apprehended, and later, Willie helps Slim and Della plan their honeymoon.

- The mayor has sent for a gunslinger who, though appearing to clean up the town, is really to be the mayor's means of taking the town over. When Roy and Gabby arrive in Tombstone, Roy is mistaken for the gunslinger. Just as Roy is ready to expose the mayor, the real gunslinger shows up.
- Keith Neville and Dan Casey, two small-time stage actors, are traveling by bus back to New York City, and have an overnight stay in a small town. They take a room in a local hotel and a murder is committed in an adjoining room to Keith. The latter hears the gunfire, goes to investigate, and is there when the local police arrive. He and Casey are both held on suspicion of murder and jailed. While a local policeman is going through their luggage at the hotel, he discovers a letter of introduction, in Keith's suitcase, that reads: "It is requested that all official courtesy be extended to Mr. Geoffrey Desmond, Chief Inspector of the Criminal Investigation Department of the London Matropolitan Police, during his journey on a dangerous secret mission." The letter is a stage-prop from the play the two actors had just performed in, but the Police Chief thinks it is real and releases them from jail, and Keith decides to stay on and help the local bobbies solve the murder. He has a vested interest in doing so as Julie Graham, a girl he met on the bus-trip, is the daughter of the a man the District Attorney has now charged with the crime, and Keith stays to help her clear her father of the charges.
- Chuck Stevens(William Lundigan), a sailor who is allergic to women, receives a letter notifying him that he will inherit a large sum of money if he marries before his next birthday, Not realizing the letter was sent by two of his pals, Chuck decides to court a girl.
- Federal Agent Gene Autry and his sidekick Frog are sent to Mexico to prevent foreign powers from gaining control of Mexican oil refineries and fomenting revolution among the Mexican people. Gene falls in love with Senorita Dolores but finds he must leave for the island of Palermo, where her uncle, Don Diego, is being prevented from transporting his cattle to market by the foreign agents, who have co-opted Dolores' brother Andreo into joining them. While trying to load cattle by sea into a waiting cargo ship Gene and his men are attacked by Andreo and his revolutionaries, with fatal results.
