In the clip from the “Fight or Flight” episode, we see a bloody-nosed Maddie riding shotgun with Doug (Brian Hallisay), who has just kidnapped her after stabbing Chimney in the gut in front of her apartment and leaving him for dead. “9-1-1” returned after a long hiatus Monday night with an episode that stabbed fans right in the gut in its final moments — when Chimney (Kenneth Choi) got stabbed right in the gut.

Just when it seemed he and Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) were going to finally make things official with their first real date, her estranged, abusive husband, Doug (Brian Hallisay) — who has been secretly trying to locate her and buddying up to Chimney by hiding his true identity — attacked Chimney in front of her apartment and left him for dead. Right after Maddie had finally summoned up the courage to send Doug the divorce papers, too!

9-1-1 returned for the back half of its second season on Monday in the most 9-1-1 way possible, delivering a facelift gone wrong, an out-of-water shark attack and a (potentially) fatal final twist.

Let’s begin with a quick summary of the night’s events: Athena and Maddie worked together to reunite two kidnapped children with their parents, though both had bigger drama awaiting them at home. Ahead of the premiere of part 2 of its second season on March 18, Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Oliver Stark, Aisha Hinds, Kenneth Choi, Rockmond Dunbar, and Ryan Guzman of Fox’s 9-1-1 took the stage at PaleyFest Sunday evening in Los Angeles along with showrunner Tim Minear to talk about the over-the-top show and what’s in store for some of the characters — particularly Choi’s character Chimney and newcomer Hewitt who joined the second season as 9-1-1 operator Maddie.

After screening an episode which Minear called a “sampler platter” of the series, the group came out and shortly after, moderator Tim Stack of Entertainment Weekly pointed out that Choi was there so it’s a good sign that Chimney is still alive after his life was hanging in the balance at the end of the episode. “9-1-1” dove into one of its biggest emergencies yet on the Season 2 fall finale Monday night: We met Maddie’s abusive ex-husband Doug in the final moments of the episode, just as everyone’s Christmas seemed so merry and bright.

Tim Minear, the first-responder drama’s showrunner, spoke with TheWrap ahead of the episode to explain how he decided to reveal the man who has haunted Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt). He also explained why he cast Hewitt’s real-life husband, Brian Hallisay, in the part.
