Agatha Christie: Lucy Worsley on the Mystery Queen
(2022)

Worst narration...make it feel like a sad pantomime.
I have no idea who Lucy Worsley is but her narration destroys this series. Her constant, painfully laborious attempts to make every comment like a badly acted mystery play are excruciating. Although, obviously not her fault, her speech impediment adds to the feel of watching a children's pantomime.

Factually, the series is interesting and informative but the information is lost in the distracting presentation.

I feel many facts have been slightly twisted to fit the narrative.

As others have pointed out her pronunciation of Hercule Poirot's name is also annoying....perhaps the book would have been a better choice.

Basically free porn
I have no objection to anyone watching porn but to disguise it as artistic entertainment when it is just painfully slow and basically boring is actually insulting to the viewers.

If some of these shows relied more on the writing and less on the sex scenes they would be a great deal more watchable. Kate Blanchett is wasted in her role and the younger version just doesn't pull off the role. Good to see Kevin Kline returning to the screen but Sasha Baron Cohen???

At least you won't feel like you need to delete your browser history. Such a waste of a few great cast members....do yourself a favour and read the book instead.

Griselda
(2024)

Miscast. Vergara cannot pull this off.
Much like Nicole Kidman in The Hours, Sophia Vergara need more than a prosthetic nose, bad teeth and CGI cigarette smoke to play Griselda.

I thought the hype around this show was deserved but apparently it was just that....hype. The only thing believable about her portrayal was the ability to speak Spanish. She was unable to portray the ruthlessness of the real life Griselda or even capture an ounce of her character. Every scene was overacted and the subtitles were simply annoying.

This is obviously an actress who depends on her looks to carry her through a scene. It is impossible to take the character seriously and you expect her to revert to her character in Modern Family at any second.

The rest of the cast are pretty good but as she is barely off screen you are quickly back to almost laughing at her portrayal.

Give it a miss unless you are really bored.

True Detective
(2014)

Series 4 review
This is an outstanding show so far with great acting and beautiful cinematography. Jodie Foster is brilliantly cast and the rest of the cast put in solid performances. It is fast paced and while there appear to be major plot holes the show still manages to capture the imagination and leaves you waiting for the next episode with bated breath.

The CGI is weak but can be ignored easily. It is probably best that you have at least watched Season one of True Detective as there are tie ins with Season4.

Definitely worth watching.

It may be worth doing some background reading on stories by Jules Verne and Edgar Allen Poe. It will add to possible theories on the outcomes....or it may be nothing.

The Kidman Curse
I was actually looking forward to watching this show, but sadly Nicole Kidman has reached a point with interference to her natural facial expressions that I couldn't help to be distracted from the storyline. I don't believe she has the range to play any character other than Nicole Kidman. The show itself is visually stunning, and the other actors are all quite strong in their roles. The storyline so far is interesting, but once again, Kidman's lack of acting ability and range, in my opinion, diminishes the show to being only worthy of a three star rating. I don't believe I will waste my time watching more than the first episodes.

Only for diehard fans.

Somewhere Between
(2017)

Ruined by lead actress
This could have been quite watchable if not for the incredibly bad acting of Paula Patton.

Every sentence is over acted and you wish she would be the next to be killed. The script isn't great but would have at least been watchable with someone other than Patton. No likeable characters in the entire series.

Poker Face
(2022)

Disappointing in so many ways
This movie was the equivalent of standing in a five star restaurant and only being allowed to smell the food.

Given the cast, the locations and storyline it should have been a fantastic film but everything was elusive. Each scene gave you the expectation that something good was about to start and it just never happened.

I think most people will be slightly shocked when they realise the movie has actually ended.

Not worth the risk of bringing Covid to Kiama and Woolloomooloo Not worth being rough on John Law's beautiful cars Too soon to use the same house location as used in the Invisible Man.

God's Favorite Idiot
(2022)

WORST SHOW EVER
I now finally believe that people are actually paid to leave good reviews for shows on this platform. No one could consider leaving a 10/10 for this rubbish.

Bad concept Bad writing Shocking acting Unfunny Pure drivel Ticks all the boxes. If you can get past the first two episodes you may make it to heaven.

Senior Year
(2022)

Just embarrassing.
Typical Rebel Wilson character without the fat jokes. This was so cringeworthy I was embarrassed to be an Australian. Wilson has no comic timing and without the 'fat' slapstick this just never gets off the ground. She may be OK in other shows but she is not talented enough to be a lead. Great work in improving her appearance, now she needs to improve her acting.

It would be interesting to see her transition into non comedic roles and see if she is better in another genre. Give it a miss if your IQ is over 50.

The First Lady
(2022)

Two out of three ain't bad.
Viola Davies was the weak link in what was otherwise a great show.

Anderson and Pfeiffer were brilliant in their roles but the lip pursing and embarrassingly bad acting of Davies was completely off putting. This performance seems an insult to Michelle Obama and not in keeping with her physicality. I eventually had to skip most of her performance.

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window
(2022)

Ok if you can't find anything else to watch
This began slowly with a hint of promise but descended quickly into a mish mash of every genre available. It bordered at times on the ridiculous... actually it crossed the border often.

The ending was hugely predictable although I would not have been surprised if the killer turned out to be the ventriloquist's doll, a la Chucky. (They actually missed a genre, or was that their intention?) Acting was good from most cast members but couldn't save the overall cluster****.

There are much, much better shows out there, or just go for a nice walk, either would be a better choice.

The Affair
(2014)

Started out well
This started as quite a good show but seemed to rely on titillation rather than good writing. The split story lines were interesting but it often felt muddled.

It felt like more of a soap opera than anything else and by half way through I was obsessing more over Allison's top lip and the dreadful slurping noises when anyone was kissing than I was over the storyline.

This could have been really good but it just couldn't decide what it wanted to be.

I think a seven was generous.

Being the Ricardos
(2021)

Terribly miscast
If Lucille would be funny by Friday I am still waiting for Nicole to actually act and not just be Nicole Kidman.

Her face is frozen to the point that it's only expression is one of shock and the Spock eyebrows give her an alien appearance which is a constant distraction. She could have at least worked on the accent or kept the bad one consistent.

Debra Messing would have been perfect in the roll or at least someone who didn't look plastic.

The rest of the cast was OK and Nina Arianda was really good in the roll, as was William Frawley. Javier Bardem is usually a favourite of mine but was also miscast in this.

I realise Aaron Sorkin did not want actors who mimicked the original cast in looks or even style but he made a huge error in casting Kidman. Without the fake prosthetics she really has nothing to offer as an actress.

I even enjoyed the episode dealing with I love Lucy that featured in Will &Grace, where the characters were played by all four main cast members, alternating characters, a million times more than this.

Don't waste your time.....

Red Notice
(2021)

Don't expect anything and you won't be disappointed.
Sometimes it's OK to put your brain into neutral and watch something silly. Indiana Jones meets Deadpool.

This movie will never win any awards but is OK on a rainy Saturday. You wouldn't want to be paying to see it at the movies but it's fine to stream.

The Manor
(2021)

Words fail me.
This is so utterly ridiculous that I cannot even believe I sat through to the end.

Barbara Hershey's acting skills are wasted on this rubbish. I can't help feeling embarrassed for the cast.

Diana
(2021)

To my brain and ears.....I'm so sorry.
🔪🔪🔪🔪 Do yourself a favour and use these on your eyes and ears. It will be less painful than watching this shocker.

Dark Places, Deadly Illusions
(2021)

I liked the house.
I liked the house.....yep, that's the only positive thing I could think of saying.
