The Queen
(2006)

Disappointing
I saw this recently after all the hype and was disappointed. This seems to have been made for the US market perhaps the Oscars were in mind before it was in production. To say that artistic licence was used would be something of an understatement and the characters for the most part came over as wooden and one dimensional. The Queen mother was shown as a common gin swilling old sot, the Prince Philip character could have come straight out of 'Allo 'Allo Tony Blair impersonation was fair and Helen Mirren was good as the Queen. Camera work reminded me of a home movie at times and you would think they could get some facts right for instance it has been common knowledge for several decades that the Queen doesn't share her bed with Phil the Greek, is it likely that the Queen would drive anywhere without her protection squad observing? The Queen would not have made such a base error as referring to the Union Flag as the Union Jack This is just soap opera dressed up as history with speculation and minus facts

Those Glory Glory Days
(1983)

Excellent
I have a copy of this and it evokes memories of an earlier time when football meant more than just money. It is a tale of four girls passion for one particular football club and their excitement as the season draws to a close at the prospect of doing the double! It is a coming of age tale which reflects the lives of the four girls but one in particular as her family structure starts to disintegrate. Set at the beginning of the sixties it captures perfectly the time period and there is of course the guest appearance by Danny Blanchflower the Spurs legend. If you get the opportunity to see this - take it! It will make you smile.

The Gunman
(2004)

Average
I generally like to watch independent films as opposed to the big Hollywood productions especially when a subject tends to be controversial. I was generally dissatisfied with this movie and it isn't to do with just one thing but several things which niggle at the back of my mind. The plot could have been the basis of a really good story, working policeman investigating missing children finds himself emotionally involved when his wife is shot to prevent his daughter being snatched, but the story rapidly settles into a tried and tested formula and inconsistencies creep in such as if you are going to shoot a woman you aren't going to leave the daughter behind if she was your goal. I'm not sure if it was the way the film was edited but there were continuity problems, perhaps it was felt that the film had to be shorter but sometimes I felt that I had missed something somewhere like missing a page of a book. I guessed who the assassin was but there was no reason why the child snatcher became what he was. Perhaps I demand too much it was a good effort on a difficult subject but better direction and editing would have made a the storyline better

Send mere slik
(2001)

Funny And Touching
I liked this film, it had humour, warmth and some geniunely touching moments. I don't speak this language but it was easy to follow, the two child actors were quite convincing in their roles, it was almost as if they were really sisters with their squabbles, secrets and at play. I hope i am not going to give too many spoilers but the film starts with a train ride for the girls, they are leaving their city life behind for a stay with their grand-parents in a rural setting. They obviously aren't too pleased with the prospect. The grandparents are set in their ways, especially the grandfather but over time they warm to the children despite the scrapes they get into. I have a feeling some people have rated this film from an adult's perspective when it is shot from a child's perspective. Not to be missed is the look on the old man's face when the girls step from the train and when they are pretending to be TV interviewers with a cardboard box after the TV has broken down

Charlotte for Ever
(1986)

Charlotte Forever is NOT fantastic
Maybe I've missed the point or perhaps you have to be some kind of pretentious art house aficionado to understand the point of this movie. Let's see some guy washed up in his career has reached a mid life crisis and has hit the bottle hard (are you following me so far?), his raison d'être appears to be his daughter Charlotte (Charlotte Gainsbourg)who doesn't seem that balanced herself. Rather like walking through mud in the middle of a storm, you're treated to his angst and insecurity and her angst and insecurity throw in some nudity as well (this is a French film after all) and some miscellaneous characters and that's your plot. The acting is fine, this film is disturbing and deeply depressing and is best avoided unless you really want to be entertained this way

Secrets
(1983)

Very Enjoyable
I remember watching this on British TV when it was first released, I doubt if it will ever be released on DVD or blueray but one can hope. This was part of a series of dramas called 'First Love on Channel 4. The story centres around a young girl Louise, (played by Anna Jones), who has recently lost her father. She discovers some items belonging to her father which shows that he was a Freemason and had a secret side. sent to boarding school she confides to friends what she has found. This film is a coming of age, about being on the edge of leaving childhood behind but still filled with the naiveté of youth, it's about friendship and discovering boys but most of all I suppose about how misconceptions and assumptions can lead us all astray. Recommended viewing if you get the chance to see it, it will make you smile!
