- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsEwan McGregorEwen BremnerJonny Lee MillerRenton, deeply immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene, tries to clean up and get out despite the allure of drugs and the influence of friends. So funny, interesting, and entertaining. Robert Carlyle is hilarious in this flick.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMarlon BrandoAl PacinoJames CaanThe aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.Obv. a cinematic ride on a train of emotion, power, expressionism and other shiznitz finally getting derailed at the ascension of Al Pacino as the leader of the family. Plays out like an opera. If you haven't seen this, watch it! You might not like it but at least try and appreciate it, its worth it. I watch it like at least once a year. Usually.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJohn TravoltaUma ThurmanSamuel L. JacksonThe lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.Taking the kitsch and turning it into camp. With a story, characters and non linear plot that reads as if from a raggedy piece of paper. The ultimate coolness factor, I've know a lot of people that don't like this movie, it seems to appeal more to males, but again, its worth trying to get into it!
- DirectorSion SonoStarsRyo IshibashiMasatoshi NagaseMai HoshoA detective is trying to find the cause of a string of suicides.Messed up beyond belief! and tripped out as well. A bizarre delight I'll tell you and I'll say!
- DirectorRolf de HeerStarsNicholas HopeClaire BenitoRalph CotterillBubby has spent thirty years trapped in the same small room, tricked by his mother. One day, he manages to escape and, deranged and naive in equal measures, his adventure into a modern and nihilistic life begins.Rolf De Heer:: My fav ever Aussie director, and my fav ever Aussie film, and my fav ever film of all time ever.. The film is incredibly messed up at the beginning, sickening even, if you don't like that kind of thing, try and persevere through it because after that first act the film completely changes direction into this journey of an incredibly stunted and ignorantly innocent individual. Its hilarious! Thought provoking and really entertaining, Its not a very well known film, but everyone I've ever shown it to has loved it, from bogans to intellectuals, woman to men, everyone! Though be warned, if you aren't Australian you might not quite understand the style of humor or a lot of the references, but still worth a viewing I'd say.
Watch it! - DirectorRolf de HeerStarsDavid GulpililGary SweetDamon GameauFanatic is a government trooper who is heading an expedition to find an Aboriginal man accused of murdering a white woman. Others in the expedition are the Follower, a greenhorn trooper, the Veteran, and the Tracker.Rolf De Heer again. This movie is amazing, constantly entertaining, always holding your attention. Explores the relationships and power plays between slave and master. A movie about some colonial soldiers in Australia and their Aboriginal tracker.
Watch this! - DirectorJeremy SimsStarsSteve Le MarquandTom BudgeGigi EdgleyTwo thugs from the Perth suburb of Midland catch the last train to Fremantle. When a young woman boards the train a few stops later, they begin talking and find out not everyone on the train is who they seem to be.The movie is set entirely on a train, in only one carriage, but yet still manages to keep you on the edge of your seat which is an amazing feat in itself. The twists and turns in this movie will surprise you and satisfy you even if some of the plot elements are slightly unrealistic.
Based on an Australian theatre production and adapted into a movie.
The characters and the interactions are entirely what keeps the movie chugging along.
Definitely worth a watch! - DirectorAndrew DominikStarsEric BanaSimon LyndonVince ColosimoChopper tells the intense story of Mark "Chopper" Read, a legendary criminal who wrote his autobiography while serving a jail sentence in prison. His book, "From the Inside", upon which the film is based, was a best-seller.This movie probably wouldn't make this list if it weren't for the fact that I've met this legendary criminals ex-wife and son and I feel somehow slightly connected to him in a bizarre way. But still an Australian classic anyway. Eric Bana gives an AMAZING performance as Mark "Chopper" Brandon Read, becoming virtually indistinguishable from the real deal. And he most certainly adequately portrays the psychotic nature of the man and his idiosyncrasies.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsHarrison FordRutger HauerSean YoungA blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator.Sci-fi film-noir opera epic.
- DirectorGeorge LucasStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherLuke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader. And the other two.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsKeir DulleaGary LockwoodWilliam SylvesterAfter uncovering a mysterious artifact buried beneath the Lunar surface, a spacecraft is sent to Jupiter to find its origins: a spacecraft manned by two men and the supercomputer HAL 9000.Crazy, thought provoking and beautiful. Many people think this movie is an overrated, average piece of mediocrity disguised in the wrapping paper of pretentious sheep's snobbery. I disagree.
On the other hand some people who think the above pretend to love this movie because some people say its a masterpiece. It isn't. Its a well made, crazy trip through a heap of primordial goo. - DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJames MasonShelley WintersSue LyonA middle-aged college professor becomes infatuated with a 14-year-old girl.Hilarious.
- 19641h 35mPG8.3 (520K)97MetascoreDirectorStanley KubrickStarsPeter SellersGeorge C. ScottSterling HaydenAn unhinged American general orders a bombing attack on the Soviet Union, triggering a path to nuclear holocaust that a war room full of politicians and generals frantically tries to stop.Hilarious.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsAnthony HopkinsJohn HurtAnne BancroftA Victorian surgeon rescues a heavily disfigured man who is mistreated while scraping a living as a side-show freak. Behind his monstrous façade, there is revealed a person of kindness, intelligence and sophistication.Fantastic!
- DirectorCecil B. DeMilleStarsFredric MarchFranciska GaalAkim TamiroffSemi-fictional account of pirate Jean Lafitte's involvement in the War of 1812.I saw this movie on TV one night. It may be old, but its HILARIOUS! Intentionally as well oddly enough. The humour definitely hasn't been lost through the years.
A word of warning though, make sure to watch the 1938 version, I made the mistake of ordering the remake thinking it was the same movie.. The remake sucks. - DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellLee Van CleefErnest BorgnineIn 1997, when the U.S. president crashes into Manhattan, now a giant maximum security prison, a convicted bank robber is sent in to rescue him.One of the action movies I absolutely love.
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsClint EastwoodEli WallachLee Van CleefA bounty hunting scam joins two men in an uneasy alliance against a third in a race to find a fortune in gold buried in a remote cemetery. The ultimate operaness and dramatic mastery of the Western genre (as far as I have seen)
- DirectorRené LalouxStarsBarry BostwickJennifer DrakeEric BauginOn a faraway planet where blue giants rule, oppressed humanoids rebel against their machine-like leaders. The ultimate French trip fest.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellEllen SandweissRichard DeManincorFive friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons.Sam Raimi's finest. The perfect combination of camp, horror and comedy. Just awesome. I always say there's very little point watching horror if it doesn't make you laugh at least a little bit or unless its actually scary or disturbing. This achieves both.
- DirectorGaspar NoéStarsMonica BellucciVincent CasselAlbert DupontelEvents over the course of one traumatic night in Paris unfold in reverse-chronological order as the beautiful Alex is brutally raped and beaten by a stranger in an underpass tunnel. This movies interesting, I'm not really sure that it should be on the list. But it has one of the most brutal rape scenes in any serious movie, and that probably just moves it into my favs.
- DirectorAdam ElliotStarsToni CollettePhilip Seymour HoffmanEric BanaIn 1976 Melbourne, a lonely 8-year-old girl strikes up a correspondence with an unlikely pen pal: a severely obese 44-year-old New Yorker with Asperger's syndrome. From the maker of Harvey Krumpet, an interesting and quirky look into the lives of two pen pals. Charming, moving, funny, and intriguing animated feature.
- DirectorTerry GilliamStarsJonathan PryceKim GreistRobert De NiroA bureaucrat in a dystopic society becomes an enemy of the state as he pursues the woman of his dreams.Surrealistic and dreamy, some pretty good jokes on bureaucracy. Won't be to everyone's taste, but still worth watching, you will at least get a few chuckles from it!
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsBrad PittDiane KrugerEli RothIn Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a plan to assassinate Nazi leaders by a group of Jewish U.S. soldiers coincides with a theatre owner's vengeful plans for the same.Arreebrer Dertchie.
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsIvana BaqueroAriadna GilSergi LópezIn the Falangist Spain of 1944, the bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world.Trippy, surreal, fantastical.
- DirectorLars von TrierStarsWillem DafoeCharlotte GainsbourgStorm Acheche SahlstrømA grieving couple retreat to their cabin in the woods, hoping to repair their broken hearts and troubled marriage, but nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse.Disturbing to the max. Don't watch this one with your nan. My favourite Lars Von Trier.
