Studio Ghibli Films Ranked
Rewatched some of these and saw others for the first time in what I think will be the final ranking though some are tough to rank properly. Not a big Ghibli fanboy I suppose, I only enjoyed the top 10, the others I don't ever need to see again.

- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsDaveigh ChaseSuzanne PleshetteMiyu IrinoDuring her family's move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts.9/10, the pinnacle of Ghibli films, a great fantasy adventure. Only reason I don't give a 10 is the forced attempt to bring "love" into the story with the young leads. I didn't buy it, needed more work to make it plausible especially as the girl is younger than in most of these films.
- DirectorIsao TakahataStarsTsutomu TatsumiAyano ShiraishiAkemi YamaguchiA young boy and his little sister struggle to survive in Japan during World War II.9/10, A gut punch, definitely not something to go into lightly but an incredible story nonetheless.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsYôji MatsudaYuriko IshidaYûko TanakaWhile seeking to cure himself of a curse, young warrior Ashitaka stumbles into a conflict between the people of Iron Town and Princess Mononoke, a girl raised by wolves, who will stop at nothing to prevent the destruction of her home.9/10, I think this is the first Ghibli film i saw and it certainly set my expectations for what this studio should be able to make.
- DirectorYoshifumi KondôStarsYoko HonnaIssei TakahashiTakashi TachibanaA love story between a girl who loves reading books, and a boy who has previously checked out all of the library books she chooses.8/10, can't quite get to a 9. A sweet film that I enjoyed more on rewatch.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsSumi ShimamotoMahito TsujimuraHisako KyôdaWarrior and pacifist Princess Nausicaä desperately struggles to prevent two warring nations from destroying themselves and their dying planet.8/10, Has similar themes to Princess Mononoke, I suppose Ghibli refined the formula that Nusicaa had to make that one.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsChieko BaishôTakuya KimuraTatsuya GashûinWhen an unconfident young woman is cursed with an old body by a spiteful witch, her only chance of breaking the spell lies with a self-indulgent yet insecure young wizard and his companions in his legged, walking castle.8/10, Why do the female leads always get their hair cut in these fantasy films? Same happened in Castle in the Sky... of course Howl is a much more interesting film and doesn't have the Loony Toons slapstick stuff either.
- DirectorHiromasa YonebayashiStarsBridgit MendlerAmy PoehlerWill ArnettThe Clock family are four-inch-tall people who live anonymously in another family's residence, borrowing simple items to make their home. Life changes for the Clocks when their teenage daughter Arrietty is discovered.8.0/10, The boy Arrietty meets irritates me more on rewatch so dropping my ranking a tad, the wonder of the little people known as Borrowers just didn't have quite the same impact. Can keep the 8 rating I suppose.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsCate BlanchettMatt DamonLiam NeesonA five-year-old boy develops a relationship with Ponyo, a young goldfish princess who longs to become a human after falling in love with him.7/10, Definitely a strange one but incredibly cute without being too overloading with it. A little fish turns into a girl to be close to the little boy she met, magic and hijinks then occur. What sticks out with me after watching this film is what an insane driver Lisa is, how did that woman get her license? It also bugged me a little that a fish from the ocean is fine in fresh water but given the magical elements I suppose I need to let that slide, heh.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsShûichirô MoriyamaTokiko KatôBunshi Katsura VIIn 1930s Italy, a veteran World War I pilot is cursed to look like an anthropomorphic pig.7/10. Not sure this is a film that kids would be into but who knows. I thought it was a decent watch if nothin spectacular.
- DirectorHiromasa YonebayashiStarsSara TakatsukiKasumi ArimuraNanako MatsushimaAnna, a shy 12-year-old girl, is sent to spend time with her aunt and uncle who live in the countryside, where she meets Marnie. The two become best friends. But Anna gradually discovers that Marnie is not quite who she appears to be.7/10, Tried hard to make me tear up and failed mostly.
- DirectorIsao TakahataStarsChloë Grace MoretzJames CaanMary SteenburgenKaguya is a beautiful young woman coveted by five nobles. To try to avoid marrying a stranger she doesn't love, she sends her suitors on seemingly impossible tasks. But she will have to face her fate and punishment for her choices.7.0/10, Should probably be rated lower than a 7 but giving it a boost for its intriguing animation.
- DirectorIsao TakahataStarsMiki ImaiToshirô YanagibaYoko HonnaA twenty-seven-year-old office worker travels to the countryside while reminiscing about her childhood in Tokyo.6/10, aimed at young girls so not a real entertaining watch for me.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsKirsten DunstMinami TakayamaRei SakumaAlong with her black cat Jiji, Kiki settles in a seaside town and starts a high-flying delivery service. Here begins her magical encounter with independence and responsibility, making lifelong friends and finding her place in the world.6/10, Fluff that just didn't grab me.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsMayumi TanakaKeiko YokozawaKotoe HatsuiPazu's life changes when he meets Sheeta, a girl whom pirates are chasing for her crystal amulet, which has the potential to locate Laputa, a legendary castle floating in the sky.6/10, The cast annoyed me, the action felt like it needed that Benny Hill music playing over it, just couldn't take the film at all seriously despite what was occurring being rather serious at times. Film a big swing and a miss.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsHitoshi TakagiNoriko HidakaChika SakamotoWhen two girls move to the country to be near their ailing mother, they have adventures with the wondrous forest spirits who live nearby.6/10, I think children would love this and those who are more childlike at heart I suppose. I was bored but I recognize that this is still a great film and a great accomplishment but as it failed for me personally I can't rate this any higher than a 6.
- DirectorTomomi MochizukiStarsNobuo TobitaToshihiko SekiYoko SakamotoAs a young man returns home after his first year away at college he recalls his senior year of high school and the iron-willed, big city girl that turned his world upside down.6/10, teenage drama that felt like a waste of time. Was bored some of the time but I didn't outright dislike it like some other Ghibli titles.
- DirectorGorô MiyazakiStarsSarah BolgerChris NothAnton YelchinA group of Yokohama teens look to save their school's clubhouse from the wrecking ball in preparations for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.6.0/10, A film about saving their school clubhouse from demolition with a subplot of the parentage of the main boy and girl. About as interesting as cleaning your room. I'll be generous though and rate this at a flat 6/10.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsHideaki AnnoHidetoshi NishijimaMiori TakimotoJiro Horikoshi studies assiduously to fulfill his aim of becoming an aeronautical engineer. As WWII begins, fighter aircraft designed by him end up getting used by the Japanese Empire against its foes.5/10, I kind of enjoyed this on my first watch but was a chore when I rewatched it. Designing airplanes for 2 hrs with a bit of "romance" of him working instead of spending time with his wife. Meh. Miyazaki and others may see this as great, I can't.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsSoma SantokiMasaki SudaKô ShibasakiIn the wake of his mother's death and his father's remarriage, a headstrong boy ventures into a dreamlike world shared by the living and the dead in search of his missing stepmother.5/10, I can't lie about this, as much as I want to love this latest Ghibli film I simply didn't. I was bored for most of it. I could not connect with the boy in film, he felt adrift from any emotion and I could not understand either his actions or the story that was presented, just felt dead inside and boredom quickly took over. The Heron wasn't even really a supporting character and was terrible morally though the film wanted me to feel some kind of redemption at the end? Nope. Concludes abruptly and not sure what lessons came from it. Was it all like a fever dream? Dunno and don't care. I'll rank it a step lower than The Wind Rises.
- DirectorGorô MiyazakiStarsTaylor HendersonJazmín AbuínJB BlancAn orphan girl, Earwig, is adopted by a witch and comes home to a spooky house filled with mystery and magic.5/10, is this even a complete movie? No actual resolution and nothing really happens in the film anyway. In terms of narrative and movie making Earwig should actually be rated lower but I was never outright annoyed watching. Just left completely unsatisfied as this could have been much better. Making it a 2hr film like other Ghibli works would have given the story time to actually have a point.
- DirectorGorô MiyazakiStarsTimothy DaltonWillem DafoeMariska HargitayIn a mythical land, a man and a young boy investigate a series of unusual occurrences.5/10, Muddled film, stuff seems to just happen, characters do things that make no sense. Quite a disappointing film if not outright terrible. No real payoff from what is set up at the start, just a generic "life is important because it ends" message.
- DirectorIsao TakahataStarsYukiji AsaokaTôru MasuokaMasako ArakiThe life and misadventures of a family in contemporary Japan.4/10. To be frank I couldn't finish this, watched two or three skits and had to stop. I suppose is a good film if you want to show a group of PSAs but otherwise...
- DirectorIsao TakahataStarsShinchô KokonteiMakoto NonomuraYuriko IshidaA community of magical shape-shifting raccoon dogs struggle to prevent their forest home from being destroyed by urban development.4/10. These Ghibli films are often full of messaging about environmental issues but this was simply hitting the viewer over the head in a dull film about tanuki losing their forest homes thanks to urban development. Very adult as well, tanuki and humans die though I feel nothing for them. Animators also have a passion for raccoon testicles, an obsession really.
- DirectorHiroyuki MoritaStarsChizuru IkewakiYoshihiko HakamadaAki MaedaAfter helping a cat, a seventeen-year-old girl finds herself involuntarily engaged to a cat Prince in a magical world where her only hope of freedom lies with a dapper cat statuette come to life.4/10, I know this is aimed squarely at children but because of that I really could not get into this, the characters were flat and simplistic as was the story. Main girl was completely unlikable to me. I found the "lesson" she learned from her experience to be completely unimpactful as well as I really didn't feel as if she had any issues at all, even in a way that teenagers think of as serious. Her quick talk with her mother at the end for one annoyed me to no end for a reason I can't specify without a spoiler but I thought it completely contradicted that "lesson" she was to have learned. Terribly disappointing film.
