After studying filmmaking I rediscovered a book, "The black book of Mexican Cinema", written by my mom's uncle, Miguel Contreras Torres. Through his investigations I find out about his memorable life and the situation he lived in, how he witnessed a fresh and healthy film industry go down in the hands of the monopolist William O. Jenkins. His fight announced the loss of Mexican cinema with its public, situation inherited up until today.

A woman sees her best friend murdered before her eyes, and thus becomes very traumatised. Her husband tells her to stay at home, where she discovers a little gris-gris bag. She opens the bag, without knowing its magical origin, and smells a powder. She begins investigating and discovers a strange address: "Academia #10". She then goes there and meets a witch, who warns her of the dangers of the powder she smelled and the dark powers of voodoo. She then meets a psychologist, who becomes interested in her case and the black magic surrounding her. When a mysterious black man appears and strange things begin to happen, her life turns into a race against time and against a powerful voodoo deity.

Cinematographer Carlos Macovich met Yuliet Ortega, a young "jinetera" (prostitute) from Havana, when he shot a video in Cuba, starring model Fabiola Quiroz. When he realized that the two women had not seen their respective fathers for many years, he made this documentary, which is also a reflection on the process of filmmaking.

It is May 1520 in the vast Aztec Empire one year after the Spanish Conqueror Hernán Cortés' arrival in Mexico. "The Other Conquest" opens with the infamous massacre of the Aztecs at the Great Temple of Tenochtitlan [what is now called Mexico City]. The sacred grounds are covered with the countless bodies of priests and nobility slaughtered by the Spanish Armies under Cortés' command. The lone Aztec survivor of the massacre is a young Indian scribe named Topiltzin [Damián Delgado]. Topiltzin, who is the illegitimate son of the Aztec Emperor Moctezuma, survives the onslaught by burying himself under a stack of bodies. As if awakening from a dream, the young man rises from among the dead to find his mother murdered, the Spanish in power and the dawn of a new era in his native land. A New World with new leaders, language, customs... and God. Representing the New Order is the Spanish Friar Diego [José Carlos Rodríguez]. His mission is to convert the "savage" natives into civilised Christians; to replace their human sacrifices and feathered deities with public Christenings and fealty to the Blessed Virgin Mary. With Topiltzin, Friar Diego faces his most difficult spiritual and personal challenge, for when Topiltzin is captured by Spanish troops and presented to Cortés [Iñaki Aierra], the Spanish Conqueror places Topiltzin's conversion under Friar Diego's care. Old world confronts the New as Topiltzin struggles to preserve his own beliefs, whilst Friar Diego attempts to impose his own. All the while, the question remains: who is converting who?

Our film begins in 1834, when Humboldt, at the age of 65, starts writing in his apartment in Berlin Street, Oranienburg in Germany, all his experience and accumulated knowledge from his travels, in his work "Kosmos". In flashback, mature Humboldt tells how on March 22 of 1803, at the age of 34, a Spanish frigate arrives in Acapulco, Guerrero. He shares his surprise and dazzle by the Mexican port. After visiting Acapulco, like Humboldt's travel, our documentary will continue his journey through Chilpancingo and Taxco until Mexico City, where Humboldt, seduced by the Aztec Calendar, makes a series of studies and archaeological interpretations. During the course of the documentary, we will address the biographical background of Alexander von Humboldt, the son of an original German aristocratic family of Berlin, so that through dialogue, narration, and dramatic action, our film will achieve an interesting structure. The viewer will watch mature Humboldt waking through his library of Berlin and wondering about the meaning of life and nature. In his walks through the Tegel Castle, he will evoke episodes of his life as an explorer. The cinematic journey will follow the route of Humboldt: the mines of Pachuca and Guanajuato and a visit to the Nevado of Toluca, in the Valley of Mexico. After one year traveling, our trip will finish in Veracruz, where he and Bonpland embarked to Cuba and then back to Europe. In Paris, we will shoot the laboratory where Humboldt and Bonpland analyzed the collection of plants they brought from America, and their first publications. We will document how the results of their analysis surprised and dazzled their contemporaries. Talented in the art of storytelling, writer, philosopher and music knowledgeable, Humboldt wrote his memoirs for over 25 years, until May 6th, 1859, when he died while writing the fifth volume of his work "Kosmos" where he expresses his thoughts about his time and the essence of life.
