- DirectorsAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansRobert Downey Jr.Scarlett JohanssonPolitical involvement in the Avengers' affairs causes a rift between Captain America and Iron Man.Movie is getting great reviews and after BvS people will want to go back to what they know is safe, the sky is the limit for Civil War.
Prediction:550 million - DirectorsAndrew StantonAngus MacLaneStarsEllen DeGeneresAlbert BrooksEd O'NeillFriendly but forgetful blue tang Dory begins a search for her long-lost parents and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way.The sequel so many have been waiting for, the original is still the 3rd highest grossing Pixar movie ever at the domestic box office and this one has a chance to pass Toy Story 3 for the top spot.
Prediction: 410 million - DirectorDavid AyerStarsWill SmithJared LetoMargot RobbieA secret government agency recruits some of the most dangerous incarcerated super-villains to form a defensive task force. Their first mission: save the world from the apocalypse.DC's bold strategy of following up "BvS" with a small scale movie about villains most people have never heard of is looking to be the best idea they have had in years. Many fans are excited for a character driven movie, and David Ayers is just the man to deliver it.
Prediction: 300 million - DirectorChris RenaudStarsLouis C.K.Eric StonestreetKevin HartThe quiet life of a terrier named Max is upended when his owner takes in Duke, a stray whom Max instantly dislikes. The trailers have gotten a lot of buzz and with a prime release date in the middle of July "Secret Life of Pets" is poised to hit it big.
Prediction: 280 million - DirectorBryan SingerStarsJames McAvoyMichael FassbenderJennifer LawrenceIn the 1980s, the X-Men must defeat an ancient all-powerful mutant, En Sabah Nur, who intends to thrive by bringing destruction to the world.Movie sequels tend to make money based on how good the movie before it was, and "X-Men Days of Future Past" was so good it will propel this movie to become the highest grossing X-Men proper film ever.
Prediction: 250 million - DirectorRoland EmmerichStarsLiam HemsworthJeff GoldblumBill PullmanTwo decades after the first Independence Day invasion, Earth is faced with a new extra-Solar threat. But will mankind's new space defenses be enough? If the success of "Jurassic World" last year is any indication this movie will destroy all box office records just like its predecessor did 20 years ago. Although I don't think it will have that much success, with its middle of summer release date it has set itself up for the best chance to try.
Prediction: 230 million - DirectorJustin LinStarsChris PineZachary QuintoKarl UrbanThe crew of the USS Enterprise explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a new ruthless enemy, who puts them, and everything the Federation stands for, to the test.A popular franchise that gained new fans in 2009 and 2013, by the time this movie is release Original Star Trek fans will come around and give it a chance, but will continue the downward trend that Into Darkness started 3 years ago (Star Trek 2009, 257 mill Into Darkness, 228 mill).
Prediction: 200 million - DirectorDave GreenStarsMegan FoxWill ArnettTyler PerryThe Turtles get into another battle with their enemy the Shredder, who has acquired new allies: the mutant thugs Bebop and Rocksteady and the alien being Krang. The first movie made more money than many expected and was very popular with kids, making it prime for a big cash grab. With a June 3rd release date and no other kids movie until June 17th's "Finding Dory" it sets itself up for great success.
Prediction: 185 million - DirectorPaul GreengrassStarsMatt DamonTommy Lee JonesAlicia VikanderThe CIA's most dangerous former operative is drawn out of hiding to uncover more explosive truths about his past.Big hype for this movie and a lot of excitement, however I believe this movie will still make a modest amount of money due to the time between "Jason Bourne" and "Bourne Ultimatum". The real box office success will be the sequel to this Bourne, depending on the quality of this movie.
Prediction: 165 million - DirectorJames BobinStarsMia WasikowskaJohnny DeppHelena Bonham CarterAlice is appointed to save her beloved Mad Hatter from deadly grief by travelling back to the past, but this means fatally harming Time himself, the noble clockwork man with the device needed to save the Hatter's family from the Red Queen.Enough people want to see this movie that it will do decent, but at the end of the day will be looked at as a box office disappointment. Also could possibly get lost in the mix coming out on the same weekend as X-Men and one week before TMNT 2.
Prediction: 160 million - DirectorsMichael ThurmeierGalen T. ChuStarsRay RomanoDenis LearyJohn LeguizamoWhen Scrat's acorn sends an asteroid to Earth, the Herd must find a way to stop the asteroid from hitting Earth with the help of a returning friend.A dying franchise but still with a trusted name and being the last kids movie of the summer (July 22nd), it will make money but nothing to out of this world.
Prediction: 150 million - DirectorsClay KaytisFergal ReillyStarsJason SudeikisJosh GadDanny McBrideWhen an island populated by happy, flightless birds is visited by mysterious green pigs, it's up to three unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.An Animated movie with a recognizable brand and pretty funny trailers coming out in the middle of May is a recipe for success every time.
Prediction: 140 million - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsMark RylanceRuby BarnhillPenelope WiltonAn orphan little girl befriends a benevolent giant who takes her to Giant Country, where they attempt to stop the man-eating giants that are invading the human world.A rare summer movie from Spielberg (this decade), Disney markets movies better than anyone and with a prime July 1st release this movie will benefit from all the above factors and make a respectable amount of money.
Prediction: 132 million - DirectorNicholas StollerStarsSeth RogenRose ByrneZac EfronWhen their new next-door neighbors turn out to be a sorority even more debaucherous than the fraternity that lived there before, Mac and Kelly team with their former enemy, Teddy, to bring the girls down.Summer comedy sequels have not had a very good track record recently unless your movie is titles 22 Jump Street or The Hangover. The first movie made 150 million and Seth Rogen's suprise hit "This is the End" made 101 million. I see this coming somewhere in between.
Prediction: 125 million - DirectorRawson Marshall ThurberStarsDwayne JohnsonKevin HartDanielle NicoletAfter he reconnects with an awkward pal from high school through Facebook, a mild-mannered accountant is lured into the world of international espionage. Two of the hardest working men in Hollywood come together in this film in a very bad spot this summer. Coming out the same week as Finding Dory, one week after Warcraft and Now You See Me 2, and one week before Independence Day 2, Central Intelligence has the advantage of being one of few adlut comdies this summer, but a will no doubt get lost in the overcrowded weeks around it.
Prediction: 105 million - DirectorJon M. ChuStarsJesse EisenbergMark RuffaloWoody HarrelsonThe Four Horsemen resurface, and are forcibly recruited by a tech genius to pull off their most impossible heist yet.The first one did a great job of flying under the radar to 117 million in 2013 but I don't see the same magic happening twice. One thing the movie has going for it is coming out the same week as wildcard "Warcraft". Some movie goers might choose to see a safe franchise other than a big risk.
Prediction: 100 million - DirectorJames WanStarsVera FarmigaPatrick WilsonMadison WolfeEd and Lorraine Warren travel to North London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by a supernatural spirit.Horror movie have been doing well in the summer and The Conjuring was one of the most seccessful. Horror sequels never do as well as originals but The Conjuring 2 will still make a respectable amount of money.
Prediction: 95 million - DirectorDavid LoweryStarsBryce Dallas HowardRobert RedfordOakes FegleyThe adventures of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliott, who happens to be a dragon.Disney tends to have one big flop every summer and with them putting this movie in the middle of August I think they have set Pete's Dragon up to fail or at the very most come below expectations.
Prediction: 90 million - DirectorDuncan JonesStarsTravis FimmelPaula PattonBen FosterAs an Orc horde invades the planet Azeroth using a magic portal, a few human heroes and dissenting Orcs must attempt to stop the true evil behind this war.The curse of video game movies will continue with "Warcraft". A movie that doesn't appel to most average movie goers and a lot of other options to choose at the time of its relase will spell disaster for this ambitious yet niche film.
Prediction: 82 million - DirectorPaul FeigStarsMelissa McCarthyKristen WiigKate McKinnonFollowing a ghost invasion of Manhattan, paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, and subway worker Patty Tolan band together to stop the otherworldly threat.I had a lot of excitement for this film when it was first annouced, then the first trailer came out and crushed all hope for me and a lot of other people. Unless their marketing campaign really steps it up audiences are more likely to go see The Secret Life of Pets, The BFG or just wait a week for Star Trek: Beyond.
Prediction: 75 million
