A young woman's body is found in a drainage ditch clad in only a bracelet, showing signs of having undergone an abortion, and totally drained of blood.

In 1906 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, mourning the death of his wife, is suffering from writer's block caused by his depression. Then his secretary Woodie shows him a letter from George Edalji, a young Parsee solicitor recently released from prison for crimes of which he claims innocence, maiming livestock and sending poison pen letters, asking Sir Arthur help him clear his name. Arthur meets him and, noticing he is very short-sighted, instantly believes him to be innocent. Against the advice of the judge who sentenced George Arthur travels to Great Wyrley, scene of the crimes and meets George's family. He learns that they have suffered past persecution and George's vicar father Sharpurji received hate mail. Whilst dining with them Arthur is aware of an eaves dropper and gives pursuit, coming across a bizarre shrine.

Finding a doll belonging to George's sister and dead birds at the shrine Arthur suspects that somebody is still persecuting the Edalji family but gets no help from the local police, especially churlish Sergeant Upton, a man with a grudge against the family since they once sacked his sister from a position as their maid. Then a letter is thrown through the vicarage window, recalling the supposedly accidental death of school-teacher Bostock. Another recipient of hate mail is blacksmith William Brookes, whose son Fred grew up with George. When he is found dead after a fire Upton claims it is another accident but Arthur believes otherwise, his investigation leading to a master criminal, Hayden price.

Having discovered that George was in prison with Hayden Price and is now teaching him to read Sir Arthur meets - through the late Bostock's son Harry - Fred Brooke. He establishes that, as schoolboys Harry, George and Fred fell foul of a violent class-mate known as Speck. Sir Arthur's enquiries lead to the adult Speck, who would seem to be the true culprit of the crimes for which George was blamed - though it is too late to convict. However Sir Arthur has great difficulty in convincing the bigoted police that they arrested the wrong man, particularly as Speck had an alibi for some of the crimes. Clearly he had an accomplice and Sir Arthur must unmask them before he finally exonerates George and invites him to his wedding with Jean Leckie.

Whilst Father Brown and Mrs McCarthy are in the bank there is an armed hold-up but the robbers flee after the vault is opened to reveal the corpse of Billy Flanders, shady son-in-law of bank manager Samuel Harrogate. A note in the dead man's pocket incriminates Harrogate and Sullivan arrests him. Father Brown however realizes that the two bank clerks stand to gain by the manager's removal and later recognizes one of the robbers who tells the priest who planned the robbery. Father Brown comes to wonder why it was so important that he witnessed the failed heist before coming to discover the murderer's identity.

In a village stricken with polio barmaid Sylvia Swann is stabbed to death at the Standing Stones and her friend Ginnie Godden, the last person to see her alive, is arrested. Father Brown finds evidence to link local herbalist Malcolm to the murder site but Malcolm believes that Sylvia was ritually sacrificed to heal the polio victims and asks Father Brown to help him stop any further deaths.

Joe wants a different future than one as a petty hoodlum and when he attempts to rob an aspiring dancer Noli, he glimpses the possibilities. He imagines purchasing a briefcase as a start but his crime partner is reluctant to let him go.

A woman witnesses a murder during a store robbery but claims the accused man is not the killer. After he is convicted and weeks away from his execution date, she sees the real killer, but the police are reluctant to reopen the case.

A mysterious visitor to the confession box informs Father Brown that choleric Bishop Talbot will be murdered so Father Brown joins Talbot at a shooting party where a shot is indeed fired though the victim is the seemingly innocent Albert Davies. The bishop had argued with actor Peter Redhill over his divorce and there is certainly intrigue among Redhill and his fellow players whilst the bishop seems to inexplicably own a large collection of banned plays. In his investigation the father finds that the play's the thing and also uncovers a bizarre pact.

In 1932, Alice Whelan, fleeing a faithless husband in England and passing herself off as a widow, arrives with her baby in Simla, India - where her brother Ralph is private secretary to the Viceroy. On the train, she meets the missionary Dougie Raworth and his waspish wife Sarah, with their young son. A little boy is lifeless on the railway track, poisoned for being a half-caste, and Dougie and his assistant Leena save him, naming him Adam (after he tells them that he has no name). Another new arrival is young Scot Ian McLeod, come to stay with his uncle, Stafford Armitage, a drunken tea plantation owner, and Sarah sets her sights on him. Ambitious local boy Aafrin Delal works for Ralph, to the disgust of his sister Sooni, a nationalist who supports Gandhi and daubs anti-British slogans on the Viceroy's wall. Alice attends the first evening of the season at the Empire Club, run by the influential military widow Cynthia Coffin. Cynthia arranges for Ralph to have sex with wealthy American Madeleine Mathers and afterwards tells him that he should marry her to improve his chances of being selected as the next Viceroy. An assassin later fires at Ralph, but Aafrin steps in and takes the bullet. Alice insists on breaking protocol by accompanying him to hospital.

Following the shooting, a curfew is imposed, whilst Ralph's assistant Ronnie brings in a journalist to raise Ralph's profile, though Ralph directs him towards Aafrin, still lying injured in hospital. Alice goes to see if she can help Aafrin's family, whilst Ralph visits the gunman, nationalist Chandru Mohan, in prison, only to be attacked by him. Ralph turns to Cynthia for solace, by which time Mohan has been found dead in his cell. Armitage gives his nephew, Ian, a tour of the plantation, where he meets his neighbour, Ramu Sood, towards whom Armitage adopts a racist attitude, but to whom he also apparently owes money. The Raworths' marriage continues to disintegrate as Dougie gives the orphanage priority, whilst Aafrin wakes from his coma to find Alice by his bed. Madeleine and Ralph share a bath.

Dembe continues at Solomon's mercy. Red and Keen head to Iowa to investigate a corporation connected to the Cabal, with Ressler and Navabi on their tail. Cooper and Tom join forces.

Detective Murdoch enters the secretive world of the Freemasons when a new member is poisoned during his initiation ceremony. Things take a strange turn when Doctor Ogden reveals to Murdoch, Crabtree and Inspector Brackenreid that the young accountant really wasn't the man everyone thought.

New Troubles have infected over half the town and that's the good news.

Joe tells his wife and father he's a changed man and he's only a suspect because of his prior conviction. Barbie and Fred struggle with their desire to believe Joe's plea versus their fear he'll never change.
