Ranking Wes Andersons Movies

by lintonskanshed • Created 11 years ago • Modified 10 years ago
Wes Anderson is the master of formalistic imagery. We saw tendencies to a formalistic world already in his debut - Bottle Rocket. When you enter an Wes Anderson movie, you visit his world for a moment, we get to be in his head and his absolute fantastic imagery. Not yet has he produced a bad feature film, and I don't think he will do for a long time, because his moviemaking is constantly improving after each movie. Of the modern directors today, Wes Anderson is one of my favorites. A Wes Anderson movie is - hilarious, beautiful, smart, funny, interesting and just Wes Anderson.

The average rating of Wes Anderson's feature films for me - 7,75/10

This is how I would rate and rank Wes Anderson's short films -
1. Hotel Chevalier (8/10)
2. Castello Cavalcanti (6/10)
3. Bottle Rocket - 1994 version (5/10)
4. Cousin Ben Troop Screening with Jason Schwartzman (5/10)
5. Prada: Candy (5/10)

My rating - 8/10. Damn, I love this movie! It is so good that I was sitting on the edge on the chair just to don't miss any detail. I love the fake world that Wes is painting up for the viewer. And it is funny, really funny. And it's beautiful, really beautiful. The movie is a bit confusing, but anyway so lovely that your eyes almost don't dear to blink. This is so much Wes in this movie, and just by take a glimpse at any scene you know exactly who have made it.
  • Bill Murray, Danny Glover, Gene Hackman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Jonah Meyerson, and Grant Rosenmeyer in The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

My rating - 8/10. The Royal Tennenbaums is Wes Anderson's funniest movie, at the same time, it's heartbreaking and sad - I just love this movie. The character development in this movie is one of the best ever, and Wes imagery is just brilliant. It is fun, sad, cool, fancy, ugly, clean, dirty, and just wonderful. Wes shines through so bright here.
  • Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

    3. Moonrise Kingdom

My rating - 8/10. I love Moonrise Kingdom! It's one of the best movies from 2012 and has a story that is cute, romantic, funny and just so much Wes. The characters is very well portrayed and you get really involved in the movie quick. This is such a charming movie that I just get warm in the whole body by thinking of it. This is the kind of movie that you longs to see again. I know that I will see this movie many times in my life.
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

    4. The Grand Budapest Hotel

A writer encounters the owner of an aging high-class hotel, who tells him of his early years serving as a lobby boy in the hotel's glorious years under an exceptional concierge.
DirectorWes AndersonStarsRalph FiennesF. Murray AbrahamMathieu Amalric
My rating - 8/10. Wes Anderson's first political movie that have a much more deeper story than his other ones. The movie is a masterpiece for the eye and many scenes you just want to freeze and look at for hours. It also have many references to other moviemakers and movie eras. It is a film from 2014, made by Wes Anderson, it's a comedy but also a thrilling thriller, we grazes on both creepy Hitchcock thrillers but also funny Lubitsch comedies, we live in a Disney World with an animated fantasy only Miyazaki can accomplish, it's a love story, a political thriller, a war comedy, a romantic drama, an art film, a thriller, a brilliant cozy movie, we are in a Lachapelle photograph whilst we are in a Shishkin-landscape painted by Dali, we go from silent to talkie, from black and white film to color film, with other word - we are in a Wes Anderson movie.
  • George Clooney, Bill Murray, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson, Eric Chase Anderson, and Wallace Wolodarsky in Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

    5. Fantastic Mr. Fox

My rating - 8/10. Wes Andersons first animated movie. A very cute animated film that breathes Wes Anderson on all sides. I fell completely in love with it. Really lovely film, in other words. Just as formalistic as his earlier and later, even though it is animated. It is very deep to actually be an animated film, and some parts is actually pretty scary. Wonderful characters that I just completely love.
  • Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, and Olivia Williams in Rushmore (1998)

    6. Rushmore

    19981h 33mR87Metascore
    7.6 (203K)
A teenager at Rushmore Academy falls for a much older teacher and befriends a middle-aged industrialist. Later, he finds out that his love interest and his friend are having an affair, which prompts him to begin a vendetta.
    DirectorWes AndersonStarsJason SchwartzmanBill MurrayOlivia Williams
My rating - 8/10. Rushmore is brilliant! That is almost everything I have to say. It is so much Wes, and his visual art has grown stronger since Bottle Rocket - it is much more formal and colorful, and just a hint of what we later would see from him. Jason Schwartzman has Wes to thanks for his career, because this was his role of a lifetime. Like every Anderson movie, it is hilarious and a pleasure for the eye.
  • The Darjeeling Limited (2007)

    7. The Darjeeling Limited

    20071h 31mR67Metascore
    7.2 (224K)
A year after their father's funeral, three brothers travel across India by train in an attempt to bond with each other.
    DirectorWes AndersonStarsOwen WilsonAdrien BrodyJason Schwartzman
My rating - 7/10. A very sweet Anderson film that went home in all my books. Wes Anderson's imagery has always fascinated me and he is a master at creating interesting colorful characters, with a big dash of humor. I never get bored in this film, and even if it loses a little, according to me, after they get of the Darjeeling Limited it still holds. At the Darjeeling Limited it is a fantastic movie, I would say an nine, but after that it drops and get down to an six, a little to much Bollywood at some parts for me. Still a lovely movie.
  • Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, and Robert Musgrave in Bottle Rocket (1996)

    8. Bottle Rocket

    19961h 31mR67Metascore
    6.9 (86K)
Three friends plan to pull off a simple robbery and go on the run.
    DirectorWes AndersonStarsLuke WilsonOwen WilsonNed Dowd
My rating - 7/10. This is Wes Anderson's first feature movie. I like it! To make something like this out of the pretty bad original-idea-shortfilm from 94, is a really good work. It is a funny movie, I laughed several of times, but for to be an Wes Anderson movie I must say it is his most "boring" movie, don't take me wrong, I laughed more at Bottle Rocket, than I use to do at normal comedies - but since I know what great, funny and intelligent humor Wes would later develop in his later movies, this is not in the same class. Anyway, it's a good movie, with a great and interesting story.
