- DirectorsWolfgang ReithermanDavid HandStarsBrian BedfordPhil HarrisRoger MillerThe story of the legendary British outlaw portrayed with the characters as anthropomorphic animals. It’s the best. Hiss, the extraordinary snake - probably my favorite film character ever.
- DirectorPawel PawlikowskiStarsNatalie PressEmily BluntPaddy ConsidineIn the Yorkshire countryside, working-class tomboy Mona meets the exotic, pampered Tamsin. Over the summer season, the two young women discover they have much to teach one another, and much to explore together.I find it profoundly moving. The performances were stunningly honest. Pawel Pawlikowski is a director that I find intriguing; I have heard he throws lines over the top of the camera in order to get you to improvise.
- DirectorJames FoleyStarsAl PacinoJack LemmonAlec BaldwinAn examination of the machinations behind the scenes at a real estate office. The most staggering film cast ever, and every single actor firing on all cylinders in a way that I left and wanted to give up.
- DirectorHugh HudsonStarsBen CrossIan CharlesonNicholas FarrellTwo British track athletes, one a determined Jew and the other a devout Christian, are driven to win in the 1924 Olympics as they wrestle with issues of pride and conscience. One of my mom and dad’s favorites when we were kids so we watched it endlessly. I’ve even been to the beach in St. Andrews in Scotland where they shot and tried running down the beach with my head thrown back, slightly obsessing.
- DirectorGarry MarshallStarsRichard GereJulia RobertsJason AlexanderEdward, a rich entrepreneur, hires Vivian, a prostitute, to accompany him to a few social events. Trouble ensues when he falls in love with her and they try to bridge the gap between their worlds.Another one of my parents’ favorites. I still find it an utterly genius bit of filmmaking.
- DirectorJacques AudiardStarsRomain DurisAure AtikaEmmanuelle DevosWill Thomas still lead a life of crime and cruelty, just like his thuggish father, or will he pursue his dream of becoming a pianist?Roman Duris was a young De Niro in that film and I found it totally extraordinary.
- DirectorGeorge StevensStarsElizabeth TaylorRock HudsonJames DeanSprawling epic covering the life of a Texas cattle rancher and his family and associates.I had always thought that James Dean as this good looking [actor] with this iconic flavor about him, but when you see Giant - he’s only 23 years old when he made that film and he plays from age 10 through to his 40s/50s. His transformation is amazing.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpyVernon DobtcheffNine years after Jesse and Celine first met, they encounter each other again on the French leg of Jesse's book tour.I saw this one first and have seen the other ones since; for me, this second one - I was caught so off-guard by it and I found it profound in its simplicity.
- DirectorWarren BeattyStarsWarren BeattyDiane KeatonEdward HerrmannA radical American journalist becomes involved with the Communist revolution in Russia, and hopes to bring its spirit and idealism to the United States.I saw it when I was preparing for a meeting a few years ago. This idea of when films had intervals - it is absolutely gigantic in its scope and scale. It’s rigorous and I think it challenges its audience - there’s no dumbing down. And the performances are immaculate.
- DirectorMichael BayStarsSean ConneryNicolas CageEd HarrisA mild-mannered chemist and an ex-con must lead the counterstrike when a rogue group of military men, led by a renegade general, threaten a nerve gas attack from Alcatraz against San Francisco. It’s my brother’s favorite film and he’s three years older and I spent my youth having it quoted to me. “Carla was the prom queen.” And I was in San Francisco a couple weeks ago and got to witness Alcatraz from a distance so that was exciting.
- DirectorJames MarshStarsPhilippe PetitJean François HeckelJean-Louis BlondeauA look at tightrope walker Philippe Petit's daring, but illegal, high-wire routine performed between New York City's World Trade Center's twin towers in 1974, what some consider, "the artistic crime of the century".Bonus pick!
It’s going to sound sycophantic because he (James Marsh) is the director of this film (The Theory of Everything). Astounding – it subverted everything I thought it was going to be about.
