- DirectorTerry GilliamTerry JonesStarsGraham ChapmanJohn CleeseEric IdleKing Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table embark on a surreal, low-budget search for the Holy Grail, encountering many, very silly obstacles.I'm amazed by how this is a nearly constant stream of classic scene after classic scene. There's some slower bits that don't hit as hard, but it's a brisk movie that's still funny an entertaining throughout.
- DirectorLeigh WhannellStarsDermot MulroneyStefanie ScottAngus SampsonA prequel set before the haunting of the Lambert family that reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.Pretty bland and forgettable. Not particularly scary, but not so offensively bad it angered me. It turns Elise into a bit too much of a super hero, but having one of the major characters be bed ridden and literally unable to run away is a neat enough idea to counter act it.
- DirectorMax McGuireStarsNatalie HallEvan WilliamsAlison BrooksLongtime friends and local radio hosts Maggie and Jack fake it as a couple for their families and listeners in hopes of getting their show syndicated. The two main characters are a male and female radio show hosts. They've known each other from childhood. You can see exactly where this is going from the first minute and it doesn't do a single thing to surprise you.
- DirectorChris McKayStarsWill ArnettMichael CeraRosario DawsonA cooler-than-ever Bruce Wayne must deal with the usual suspects as they plan to rule Gotham City, while discovering that he has accidentally adopted a teenage orphan who wishes to become his sidekick. In the face of immense disappointment, this is definitely a good movie to pick up. It's fun, it's funny and there's enough subtlety, set up and pay off and decent character arcs to make the movie feel clever, even if most of what happens is admittedly a bit predictable.
- DirectorOlivia WildeStarsKaitlyn DeverBeanie FeldsteinJessica WilliamsOn the eve of their high-school graduation, two academic superstars and best friends realize they should have worked less and played more. Determined not to fall short of their peers, the girls try to cram four years of fun into one night.I feel that it's was actually funnier on the second rewatch than the first. It's a fun, quirky and interesting coming of age story. I also didn't feel like the structure was as generic as I felt it was the last time I saw it. I mean, it definitely still was, but the different set pieces and ride the film takes you on really helps break things up while still maintaining forward momentum.
- DirectorMax BarbakowStarsAndy SambergCristin MiliotiJ.K. SimmonsStuck in a time loop, two wedding guests develop a budding romance while living the same day over and over again.Still endlessly charming. The movie definitely dips a bit when it gets all serious and dramatic, but Nyles's conversation with Roy really manages to deliver and kickstart the movie again. It's also well written and there's a lot of little moments that hint at what's to some that are actually very subtle and not necessarily something I noticed while watching it for the first time.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloAfter the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to reverse Thanos' actions and restore balance to the universe.Upon second watch, it's a solid 7/10. It's definitely weaker than Infinity War and shines the strongest when it focuses on the more serious moments. However, I don't think it's poorly paced, slow or drags at all (which is a common prediction that I saw) and I still stand by a 10/10. There is no other movie like Endgame and it's going to be a long, long time before there is another one like it. It's not high art, but it's definitely a big milestone in the history of cinema.
- DirectorRod LurieStarsScott EastwoodCaleb Landry JonesOrlando BloomA small team of U.S. soldiers battles against hundreds of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.Despite what the utterly terrible poster you'd no doubt seen on a Redbox or your Netflix feed would suggest, don't sleep on this movie. It's a very entertaining movie that manages to capture both the inherent tension that comes between gunfights and the casual manner that men surrounded by death conduct themselves. I do think that the movie is better served if you don't know it's based off of a real battle, as the battle itself doesn't come into play until into the last hour of the film. It is Hollywood-ized at parts, but the more Hollywood aspects usually are in service of a tight script, so it's passable. Not quite on the same level as Black Hawk Down or Saving Private Ryan, but still a damn good war film.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsTom HanksMatt DamonTom SizemoreFollowing the Normandy Landings, a group of U.S. soldiers go behind enemy lines to retrieve a paratrooper whose brothers have been killed in action. It's a weird mix of horribly depressing but also a comfort film for me. The film does a really good job of illustrating the horrors of war and how it breaks down everyone involved. I wouldn't quite call it anti-war, but it definitely only paints a negative picture and I wouldn't blame anyone who says it is.
Also, the dialogue is fantastic. I've seen this movie far too many times, but just noticed how great the dialogue is. Every character has their own way of speaking and a unique voice. How and what the characters do and say help imbue a lot of personality into each one of them in a pretty subtle way. Really underrated part of the film, IMO. - DirectorPaco CabezasStarsAnna KendrickSam RockwellTim RothA girl falls for the "perfect" guy, who happens to have a very fatal flaw: he's a hitman on the run from the crime cartels who employ him.Anna Kendrick is the queen of middling comedies that aren't particularly great but are also not too terrible. It's a pretty bland and inoffensively enjoyable movie that's nearly instantly forgettable. Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick have nice chemistry and carry an otherwise garbage script. There were a couple moments that got a genuine laugh or two out of me though, so that's a plus.
- DirectorTim MillerStarsRyan ReynoldsMorena BaccarinT.J. MillerA wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks. Not quite as good as I remember, but still a damn good movie. The jokes come one after the other so the ones that don't hit or are dated don't stick around before a funnier one comes along. It's a brisk and fun movie that has more heart and lower stakes than most of its genre, which still makes it a nice breath of fresh air.
- DirectorDavid LeitchStarsRyan ReynoldsJosh BrolinMorena BaccarinFoul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool) assembles a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with abilities from the brutal, time-traveling cyborg Cable.I actually think I like Deadpool 2 more than the first. It's abundantly clear that the budget is much higher this time around. And the talent behind the camera is also much stronger, even if you can clearly tell it's directed by one of the John Wick guys. It definitely focuses on the action over the comedy, but it really only stands out during the prison fight sequence. I also can't stand the kid who plays Firefist, but he's in so little of the movie that he's mostly easy to ignore.
- DirectorSam MendesStarsDean-Charles ChapmanGeorge MacKayDaniel MaysApril 6th, 1917. As an infantry battalion assembles to wage war deep in enemy territory, two soldiers are assigned to race against time and deliver a message that will stop 1,600 men from walking straight into a deadly trap.Doesn't necessarily hold up as well on a second viewing. The cracks really begin to show, especially in regards to the timing of events. The cuts also definitely become more obvious.
However, it's still a wonderfully entertaining film. It's tense, the action is exciting and it's a technical masterclass of filmmaking. I would be curious to see a religious read on the film done by someone with more knowledge of the matter than I have. There's a *lot* of religious imagery in the movie, so it has my curiosity. - DirectorJames MangoldStarsTom CruiseCameron DiazPeter SarsgaardA young woman gets mixed up with a disgraced spy who is trying to clear his name.An enjoyable if forgettable action comedy. The action is pretty standard fare and the comedy did get a couple good laughs out of me. The first half is way better than the second half, which leans harder into the spy/action stuff. Cameron Diaz's character is also wildly inconsistent, which is a little frustrating.
- DirectorSimon McQuoidStarsLewis TanJessica McNameeJosh LawsonMMA fighter Cole Young seeks out Earth's greatest champions in order to stand against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. It's not a good movie, but it is a fun one. The dialogue is terrible, the acting is hit or miss (closer to miss more often than not) and the editing is atrocious. But the movie knows what it is and doesn't take itself too seriously. The fight scenes are good, bloody fun and some of the costumes are really cool. Sub Zero is also absolutely terrifying and Kano steals the show, which makes up for the utter pointlessness of Cole.
- DirectorChloé ZhaoStarsFrances McDormandDavid StrathairnLinda MayA woman in her sixties, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad. There are moments, scenes and shots that I really like. Moments, scenes and shots that evoke strong feelings of joy and melancholy. But over all, I'm not quite sure I liked it. It's pretty slow, takes a long time to get going and feels kind of pointless for a decent chunk of the run time. Just not quite the type of movie for me.
- DirectorMakoto ShinkaiStarsRyunosuke KamikiMone KamishiraishiRyo NaritaTwo teenagers share a profound, magical connection upon discovering they are swapping bodies. Things manage to become even more complicated when the boy and girl decide to meet in person.A genuinely moving, absolutely gorgeous work of animation. It was a bit confusing at the start; I thought I had selected the wrong movie based off of my hazy recollection of what I heard about the plot. The fan service was a bit cringe at times, but the movie brought me to tears regardless. The soundtrack also wasn’t quite appropriate at parts, bringing it down from a 9 or 10/10 for me. But that feels like nitpicking when I loved the final product as much as I did.
- DirectorBrian TaylorStarsNicolas CageSelma BlairAnne WintersA teenage girl and her younger brother must survive a wild 24 hours during which a mass hysteria of unknown origin causes parents to turn violently on their own kids.A really fun and funny movie that totally whiffs it at the end. The editing is also straight garbage, but it’s just insane enough to make up for it. The kills are super underwhelming and there’s not nearly enough violence as you’d expect given the premise. Kind of underwhelming, but a good time with some booze and good friends.
- DirectorDexter FletcherStarsTaron EgertonJamie BellRichard MaddenA musical fantasy about the fantastical human story of Elton John's breakthrough years.Definitely a movie that gets better as it goes on. The blend of fantasy and reality helps turn it into more of a musical than a biopic. This helps it stand on its own and makes it a far better film than others of its ilk (looking at you Bohemian Rhapsody and The Dirt). It does still fall into familiar trappings though, and the ending is a bit disappointing because of this. Still a stunning film that deserves more recognition than it got.
- DirectorColin TrevorrowStarsAubrey PlazaMark DuplassJake JohnsonThree magazine employees head out on an assignment to interview a guy who placed a classified advertisement seeking a companion for time travel. It’s pretty much just pure fluff, but it’s sweet and enjoyable fluff. It definitely hasn’t aged well, and arguably approaches a parody of indie films, but it still a damn enjoyable time.
- StarsAurora PerrineauDiane SellersDylan ArnoldA horror anthology series with each episode inspired by a holiday.School Spirit
Breakfast Club meets Psycho. It was okay. A decent premise with too small a cast that’s kinda creepy, kinda boring and whiffs it at the end. Not really a lot to say about this one. - DirectorJohn KrasinskiStarsEmily BluntMillicent SimmondsCillian MurphyFollowing the events at home, the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realize the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats lurking beyond the sand path.In all honesty, I don’t really remember the first one all that well, other than the vague notion that I liked it. So I can’t compare the two. But Part 2 is an exciting and exceptionally tense film. It’s shot very well, and there’s very heavy The Last of Us vibes to about half the film. It lands somewhere between action movie and thriller. The sound design is also incredible.
- DirectorTara MieleStarsSienna MillerDiego LunaBeth GrantNew parents Adrienne and Matteo are forced to reckon with trauma amidst their troubled relationship. They must revisit the memories of their past and unravel haunting truths in order to face their uncertain future. It’s kind of messy and super confusing at first, but it’s also an interesting look at a relationship from its start that successfully manages to tug at the heart strings. It tries to do a lot and doesn’t quite succeed (the horror aspects while nice are short lived and out of place, for example). But this forces you to stay on your toes until the very end. Not quite sure if I liked it or not, but it’s definitely going to stick in my mind for a while.
- DirectorDon HallCarlos López EstradaPaul BriggsStarsKelly Marie TranAwkwafinaGemma ChanIn a realm known as Kumandra, a re-imagined Earth inhabited by an ancient civilization, a warrior named Raya is determined to find the last dragon. It's definitely heavily influenced by the Avatar franchise. It's a fun, if pretty bog standard Disney animated movie. The art and character design is great, but the dialogue is trash and it'd be great if we could get one movie without Disney showing us how great their water simulation technology is. I like it, but there's not really a whole lot to say about it. The opening exposition dump also could've been dropped and the movie would be better off for it. Literally everything those first five minutes tell us is also repeated at least once elsewhere during the movie.
- DirectorBong Joon HoStarsSong Kang-hoLee Sun-kyunCho Yeo-jeongGreed and class discrimination threaten the newly-formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan. Not a film you’ll soon forget, and completely deserving of all of its Oscars. It is constantly twisting and turning, taking its time to get where it needs to go while keeping you guessing at every turn. It’s layered, dense, dramatic and even a little heartbreaking, while also being quite comical at times. Don’t sleep on this, watch it as soon as you can!
