Among the suggested remakes: "Totanic" (Titanic (1997), with Jennifer González Colón), "El guaraguao de la maltita" (The Maltese Falcon (1941)), "Big Jaiba's House" (Big Momma's House (2000), with Luis Vigoreaux Jr.), "La yal y la bestia" (Beauty and the Beast (2017), with Mr. Ortiz's producing partner Jorge Pabón and with Natalia Rivera), "La hora del tapón c*br*n" (Rush Hour (1998)), "A caballo (Brokeback Mountain (2005), with Roque Rocky the Kid Gallart and Jorge Pabón), "Maripilander" (Zoolander (2001), with Maria del Pilar Maripily Rivera), "Gone Chiquigirl (Gone Girl (2014), with Puerto Rican personality Lady Mágica), "Las cazafantasmas" (Ghostbusters (2016), with Alba Nydia Díaz, Sonia Valentin, Linette Torres, and Wanda L. Sais), "Meet the Fonalledas" (Meet the Parents (2000)), "Noche en el museo de Santini" (Night at the Museum (2006), set at the Jorge Santini museum), and "The Taking of Urbano Uno Dos Tres" (The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009), with Tito Kayak), among many, many, MANY others."

Before the director finally admitted what was obvious to everybody who had seen this film and Secret Admirer (1985), it was generally assumed Eduardo Ortíz had done what he did in order to take his career to another level after specializing in what many people consider to be "lowbrow" films. However, when the director declared his 'mea culpa' on a radio show in Puerto Rico on Monday, March 7, 2016, it turned out that his main reason for doing so was much more mundane. Mr. Ortíz found himself in a situation where he would have financing for a film if he had a "package" together by a certain date, and instead of going with the screenplays he had available from local writers (including one by Angel M. Sanjurjo), he decided to go to YouTube, press 'play', press 'pause', translate / write, do a few alterations, and so on. He achieved the goal he had set for himself: not getting caught during the production of the film. In his own words, if he had told friends, family, and or co-workers, he feared they "would have done anything, including tying him up to a chair", in order to stop him from 'adapting' the 1985 film. By completing production, he assured paychecks for his cast and crew, for his post-production facility, for himself (as director and "screenwriter") and for his wife (associate producer Magda Maguie Rivas), among others, with no possibility of consequences from the financial backers, as he had delivered on his contractual obligation (a finished film)."

The film had only been playing at Puerto Rican cinemas for a few days when the first articles pointing out the similarities between the two films, and pointing out that there was no mention anywhere of it being based on 'Secret Admirer', arose. Once the film was no longer being shown in cinemas across Puerto Rico, Mr. Ortíz first issued a statement saying that there were "certain similarities between one film and the other, not plagiarism. Everything is a matter of interpretation". Only a few hours after making that statement, Mr. Ortíz changed it, saying in a radio interview that he "had done something terribly wrong", and apologizing to his cast and crew. Mr. Ortíz had ignored and/or refused to comment on the issue until actress Natalia Lugo, who played the lead on Vasos De Papel (2016), released a statement on social media where she both condemned the film and expressed the embarrassment she felt when she saw 'Secret Admirer', and came to understand how she and her fellow actors and crew had been duped."

From the 23:04 mark to about the 30:57 mark, the conversation covered what happened with this film and the aftermath after it was found to be an unauthorized copy of Secret Admirer (1985). During the conversation, she revealed that when she finally saw Secret Admirer (1985) on YouTube a few days after Vasos de papel had been released in theaters, her first reaction was "uncontrollable laughter" (as she said it: "una pavera"), followed by "Is this really where I'm at in life right now". She also compared the experience to "having married the man of her dreams, then finding out he only liked men". She thesaid that when she approached the production team of this film about this situation, they asked her to "keep quiet", and told her not to worry, because "most people would not care about it" and "even if they did, it would blow over in a weekend or so". Ms. Lugo shared her own title for this film: "Vasos de papelón" (rough English translation: "Secret Admirer with Extra Cheese") and, as she had previously done when expressing her sentiments over what happened with this film, refused to refer to Eduardo Ortíz by name."

This is what all cast and crew members believed to be true during production of the film. Mr. Ortíz had shared a photo of this page on social media, but it disappeared after Mr. Ortíz apologized for plagiarizing Secret Admirer (1985) on the Puerto Rican radio program "El Goldo y la Pelúa" (co-hosted by Mr. Ortiz's production partner Jorge Pabón) on Monday March 7, 2016."

These included three of the older actors from the film (Sully Diaz, 'Luisa de los Rios, and especially Raúl Carbonell), actor / personality Roque Rocky the Kid Gallart, and licensed & practicing attorney Luis A. Riefkohl). Mr. Gallart, who has participated in some of Mr. Ortíz's previous film projects, said that these events would end up "having no consequences at all" for Mr. Ortíz, and he also chastised and mocked actress Natalia Lugo for speaking out against the film, saying that "she should have kept her mouth shut" and that "she should have waited until she had a more extensive track record" before speaking out like that. Mr. Riefkohl downplayed the plagiarism scenario, and also called the people who were mocking the situation Mr. Ortíz had put himself in "haters". Mr. Riefkohl served as the head of Puerto Rico's Film Commission in the last decade, and has since continued to be involved in the island's film scene with his company, in consulting / producer duties."

Sanjurjo on February 17, 2016 exposing the plagiarism situation, and the social media post by Natalia Lugo written on the night of March 7, 2016 that made the situation front-page news in Puerto Rico, two other articles were instrumental in changing the response from "writer" / director Vasos De Papel (2016) and his production team from denial / mockery to reluctant admission. The first of those articles was published on Friday February 19, 2016 - one day after this film was released in theaters. The article was written by Puerto Rican film critic Orlando Maldonado, and it made comparisons between four sequences from this film with their nearly-identical counterparts from Secret Admirer (1985). Mr. Maldonado stopped short of directly accusing Mr. Ortíz of plagiarism, choosing to leave that decision up to the reader. The second article was published about a week later, and was written by filmmaker William Rosario Cruz. Mr. Rosario-Cruz's article, which he titled "Copy / Paste Cinema", called this film "one of the most blatant cases of plagiarism in the history of cinema" and concluded that the reason for this film only being "about 95% identical" to Secret Admirer and not 100% was because of budget limitations. It also took the Puerto Rican media to task for ignoring the plagiarism issue, but did not go into why that was (an issue that came to light after this film had been yanked out of movie theaters), and wondered how it could be that, in the year 2016, a United States territory could still operate "like the Wild West of the 1800s". Mr. Sanjurjo's social media post exposed the issue, Mr. Maldonado's article gave the issue legitimacy, Mr. Rosario-Cruz's article made the issue go viral in Puerto Rico, and Ms. Lugo's post turned the issue into front-page headlines on the island. As of February 2017, Mr. Sanjurjo's social media post and Mr. Rosario-Cruz's article are no longer public."
- DirectorEduardo OrtízStarsOmar Cruz SotoBlas Sien DiazRocky the KidManolo and Kacho thought they had escaped all the dangers of doing illegal business, but they were wrong.TRIVIA NOTE #9: "Once the plagiarism situation was out in the open in Puerto Rico, two questions remained unanswered. First, why did Caribbean Cinemas, Puerto Rico's de-facto film exhibition monopoly, continue profiting from showing what was clearly an unauthorized version of a not-obscure American studio film. Second, why did Puerto Rico's mainstream media, including its film critics, refuse to cover this issue until after they had no choice but to do so (and only after the film had been yanked out of exhibition). An answer for both questions emerged: the presence of what had until that point been a relatively quiet, new player in Puerto Rico's ever-nascent film "industry", Grupo Ferré Rangel Media, also known as GFR Media. GFR Media publishes the island's two most popular newspapers, El Nuevo Día and Primera Hora, and controls a major stake in Banco Popular (Puerto Rico's de-facto bank monopoly). A clear pattern became evident: a film is released in 20-30 theaters (about 10% of all theaters on the island), the film gets zero reviews from film critics (if somebody asked them why no review, the answer would be "the film had not been screened for critics"), and before this film happened, the film would make a nice amount of money at the box office. GFR Media's involvement has varied from explicit (as in Por amor en el caserio (2014)) to more subtle (as in this film and in Pepo Pal Senado (2016)), this last one via its own Piñolywood Studios)."

Even with the very high amount of criticism, "blowback", and permanent damage that Mr. Ortiz has received up to this point, it is very likely that things would have been even worse if the note-for-note similarities between this film and Secret Admirer (1985) had not been pointed out until after a home video release had happened. In that scenario, it is highly likely that the film would have ended up online and shared, and then anybody in the world would have been able to play both films and see for themselves (including the filmmakers and actors of Secret Admirer (1985)). Even a "cam-cordered" copy could have achieved this, but it looks like nobody did this during the two-week theatrical run that this film had in Puerto Rico, even though the island has gained a reputation for rampant movie piracy that is not limited to USA film releases."
- DirectorEduardo OrtízStarsTony BananaOmar Cruz SotoBlas Sien DiazTRIVIA NOTE #11: "Puerto Rico's mainstream media did not comment on the plagiarism issue with this film until after lead actress Natalia Lugo and Puerto Rican film critic (and filmmaker) Juanma Fernández-Paris expressed their horror / embarrassment on separate social media posts. Mr. Fernández-París was the first to do so of the two, and he wrote on Saturday, March 5, 2016. Within hours after what he wrote started circulating on social media, the Facebook and Twitter pages for this film "disappeared". Ms. Lugo followed the next day, then the radio program 'El Circo de la Mega' dedicated a whole segment of their morning show on Monday, March 7, 2016, and then every media outlet in Puerto Rico commented on it in one way or another. On Tuesday, March 8th, 2016, Puerto Rican newspaper 'Primera Hora' had this as their main story, front-page news of the day, with the title "¡Qué clase de copiete!" over photos of Eduardo Ortíz and Natalia Lugo [rough English translation: Plagiarism at its finest!]."

Mr. Ortíz also said this would prompt a theatrical re-release of the film in Puerto Rico, followed by a home video release, and that he expected public interest in the film to be high because of its unusual history."

This got considerably heightened coverage in Puerto Rican news media (and podcasts) due to the plagiarism situation that occurred with Mr Ortiz when this film (Vasos de papel) was released in 2016."

One of the podcast conductors, Alexis "Macetaminofén" Zárraga, spoke about how Mr. Ortiz and himself had talked about how he basically expected the plagiarism issue with 'Vasos de papel' to go away with the passing of time, and how frustrated he was with the fact that it had not and with having to check social media (and this page) constantly to make sure he could counteract / ask for deletion of items that were unfavorable to him and to the film.
