2024 Movies RANKED

2024 was an incredible year for movies filled with box office successes and flops, surprisingly solid or disappointing flicks, and breakout critical and commercial sensations. I saw more new releases than any year beforehand. Admittedly, for better or worse, it felt like Hollywood focused more on reviving IP than doing original works. However, that allowed moviegoers to check out more works from independent studios like A24, Neon, and Focus Features that they probably wouldn't have in any other year. "Longlegs," "Nosferatu," "Conclave," and "The Substance" all benefited from positive word-of-mouth and great marketing, leading to impressive box office runs. Even though IP became the focus, major studios still released remarkable features, such as "Wicked," "Dune: Part Two," "Challengers," and "The Fall Guy."

I remain hopeful that 2025 will be just as good, if not better, in the cinematic landscape. I'll rank all the 2024 films I see from worst to best through this list.

I have the winners for A.J. Kelly's Film Awards 2025, so why shouldn't I reveal them now? I'll be more organized when I do this next year. Anyway, here are the winners:

BEST ACTION
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
"Boy Kills World" came close, but the overall positive vibes I got with the action present here make it the ever-so-close winner.

BEST ACTOR
Sebastian Stan | A Different Man
I legit thought Chalamet's work for "Dune: Part Two" would be my favorite, but the transformative work Stan puts in for "A Different Man" needs to be seen to be believed.

BEST ACTRESS
Mikey Madison | Anora
If "Anora" is any indication, we need more leading roles for Madison ASAP.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
Dune: Part Two | Greig Fraser
The grand feel of Fraser's work can't be understated.

BEST COMEDY
Anora
This movie provides fifteen minutes of comedy that beats every other comedic offering this year.

BEST DIRECTOR
Coralie Fargeat | The Substance
Fargeat expertly helmed a film with terrific performances, exceptional cinematography, and a wild narrative with an important message.

BEST DRAMA
A Different Man
It's a memorable take on the concepts of identity and character.

BEST EDITING
Hundreds of Beavers | Mike Cheslik
The film's editing is one of its most unforgettable attributes.

BEST HORROR
Nosferatu
"The Substance" may be more inventive, but I was surprised at how the horror worked for me here.

BEST PACING
Anora
Zero moments clash with the film's momentum.

I heard that it was the best film of the year, and I agree with that statement.

This thrilling and surprising dramedy is not only the best film of the year but one of the decade's best that deserved all five of its Oscar wins, including Best Picture. Mikey Madison delivers an astounding performance as Anora, a sex worker whose marriage to a Russian oligarch's son takes an unexpected turn once the latter's parents find out. Sean Baker's direction was beautiful, his comedic and dramatic screenplay was equally excellent, and the 2-hour and 19-minute runtime was well-utilized, making it one of the must-watches in a year filled with them!

Chu's fantastic direction, incredible CGI, superb script, and flawlessly used runtime make this a must-watch musical for all ages!

I've been waiting to finally see this truly thought-provoking, incredibly ambitious, unbelievably flawless psychological horror gem everyone should see at least once. It's an experience that knowing nothing beforehand is a necessity, so there's no way in hell I'm spoiling anything. All you need to know is that Director JT Mollner took inspiration from Quentin Tarantino while getting terrific performances out of Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner in a masterpiece that will keep you guessing until the very end!

A stunning feat of wordless storytelling, "Flow" is a wildly investing, beautiful animated film that I'm happy pulled an upset Best Animated Feature Oscar win. The theme of teamwork is implemented effectively in the adventure Cat goes on, teaming up with different animals to survive after a massive flood. Trying to hold back tears will be the ultimate challenge, and you'll gain a huger appreciation for cats as it made me understand my adorable felines more, so it's an unbelievably incredible must-watch!

It's truly devastating that this Robbie Williams biopic flopped during its opening weekend, and all I can do is encourage you to see it! This Robbie Williams biopic, which portrays him as a monkey, happens to tell a very human story about fame. An exceptional lead performance by Jonno Davies, extravaganza direction by Michael Gracey, some of the best musical sequences put to film, and a strong narrative are just some of the elements that make this an unfathomably perfect must-watch!

Whether it's the voice acting from Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, and the rest of the astounding cast, gorgeous animation, Kris Bower's fantastic score, or the unbelievable directing from Chris Sanders, it'll stand the test of time as an animation landmark that's a once-in-a-lifetime theatrical experience!

After watching this story's 1922 and 1979 interpretations, I can say that Robert Eggers made a fantastic remake that didn't merely copy what came before. All the actors did phenomenally, but Lily-Rose Depp and especially a transformative Bill Skarsgård gave some of the best performances I've seen all year. Eggers' directing and screenplay are unbelievably great, the film's Oscar-nominated set and costume designs are immaculate, and the practical effects enhance the experience, making for a hauntingly beautiful masterpiece!

Without a doubt, the best experience of the year and a film I haven't been able to stop thinking about, "The Substance" will blow you away! Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are outstanding as Elisabeth, an actress looking for a comeback, and Sue, the result of her aspirations. The directing is fantastic, Dennis Quaid's supporting role as Harvey was astounding, and the film's messaging is welcome and necessary, but it's not for everyone!

"A Different Man" is easily the most profound film of 2024, which held my attention throughout. Sebastian Stan delivers a truly mesmerizing performance as Edward, an actor who finds his life drastically altered once he undergoes a procedure that fixes his disfigured face. The cinematography, directing, Oscar-nominated makeup, supporting turns by Renate Reinsve and Adam Pearson, and small details worth spotting make for an instant A24 hit!

For some reason, I couldn't connect with "Lake Michigan Monster," but that team's sophomore effort was one of the funniest films of 2024. This fact is because of its direct approach to Looney Tunes-inspired slapstick while telling the simple story of an applejack seller trying to kill "Hundreds of Beavers." Additionally, how the team utilized the reported $150,000 budget to create this comedic masterpiece makes it an admirable, well-crafted, hilarious must-watch!

This trilogy-capper lived up to the hype and then some and is the must-watch of the Christmas season. I loved the film's story, specifically how they handled Shadow’s origins, while the actors did fantastic, and the film takes unexpected directions with its characters. The action was fun, it was often comedy-gold, the CGI is stunning, and the after-credit stingers will leave you happy, so go watch it!

I was unaware of the story of Christopher Reeve, which made this documentary all the more uplifting and human yet overwhelmingly heartbreaking. Although most film fans recognize Reeve for his iconic portrayal of Superman, like everyone else, there's more to him than the hero who can fly. Even near the end of his life, when he became paralyzed, he was a man of perseverance, inspiration, and, above all else, family.

I'm blown away by how extraordinary this dark comedy chronicling the origin story of real-life Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap was. Móglaí Bap, Mo Chara, and DJ Próvai are all captivating as fictionalized versions of themselves, while I loved supporting turns by Michael Fassbender and Jessica Reynolds. Rich Peppiatt's directing is stylish and vibrant, tedium is never present with the film's 1 hour and 45-minute runtime, and it's wildly hilarious, so it's another must-watch in my book!

YES!!! This action-comedy was the extravaganza that "Guns Akimbo" should have been, and it deserves more love! Bill Skarsgård and H. Jon Benjamin are fantastic as Boy, a deaf and mute man who sets out to kill Hilda Van Der Koy, the woman who took everything from him. With some of the best action of the entire year, highly inventive direction from Moritz Mohr, and memorable supporting turns from Quinn Copeland as Mina and Jessica Rothe as June27, this is a must-watch for any action fan!

One of the most suspenseful films of the year turned out to be a dramedy about Saturday Night Live. Gabriel LaBelle led a fantastic cast as Lorne Michaels, portraying the anxiety and intensity his real-life counterpart felt in the 90 minutes leading up to the debut of his show. The directing was great, the film looks like one from 1975, and the pacing is perfect, making it an underdog tale like no other!

The most thought-provoking horror film of the year is an easy recommendation. Hugh Grant gives a career-best performance as Mr. Reed, a man who traps and tests the faiths of Sisters Paxton and Barnes, performed extraordinarily by Chloe East and Sophie Thatcher. The atmosphere is unnerving, the directing and writing from Scott Becks and Bryan Woods are intense, and Chung-hoon Chung's cinematography adds up to another A24 classic!

It's not among my Top 10 favorites of the year, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a great time with this sweet dramedy. Kiernan Culkin performs excellently in his Oscar-winning turn as Benji, one of two cousins - the other played amazingly by Jesse Eisenberg - who goes on a Poland tour in memory of their late grandmother. With a witty script, heartwarming and breaking moments, and an immeasurable sense of humanity and sincerity, it's a sign that Eisenberg should direct more films!

If this is Clint Eastwood's final film, Warner Bros. betrayed him by releasing it in a few US cinemas and then straight to Max. It sucks because this was superb work from the legendary director, with a remarkable script by Jonathan A. Abrams to boot. In addition, Nicholas Hoult delivers some of the best work of his career as Justin Kemp, a family man who must make a difficult decision as a juror between sending a convicted murderer away for life or finding him innocent.

An experience that is hard to capture with words, the Oscars race begins properly with this gripping film about selecting a new Pope. Ralph Fiennes delivers one of the best performances of his career as Cardinal Lawrence, as he must manage the voting event while uncovering information that could damage the Catholic Church’s reputation. With incredible direction from Edward Berger that puts you in the shoes of Lawrence, an impeccable Volker Bertelmann score, and lively set and costume designs, it has more than secured the Best Picture nomination!

Its logic may be flawed, but when this film is wonderfully honest and hilarious, who even cares? Maisy Stella gives a career-making performance as Elliot LaBrant, a coming-of-age 18-year-old who does mushrooms and meets her older self, entertainingly played by Aubrey Plaza. The unique premise of young-meets-old-self works but doesn't take away from how realistic and emotional the film gets, making this a flawless recommendation!

Aaron Pierre is going on to great success with his performance as Terry Richmond, the veteran forced into a fight against a small town's corrupt police department after they interfere with his attempts to post bail for his cousin. With incredible directing and writing from Jeremy Saulnier, a much more thought-provoking take on the "First Blood" layout, and an intentionally upsetting atmosphere, it's a film that, in a better world, would be up for Best Picture!

It's a tragedy that this was a box-office bomb, not only because it marked a depressing start to the summer movie season, but it also manages to be a fantastic film packed to the gill with great action and well-placed meta-humor. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt were extraordinary as a stunt double and a director rediscovering their love for each other as the former must find the leading man of the latter's film. People want to see movies like "The Fall Guy," but if we can't change the box office results, we can give it repeat viewings and increase its Blu-ray or VOD sales!

The MCU isn't back, but this was a satisfying team-up of Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine that has rewatchable written all over it. There were cameos galore, bloody action, and incredibly comedic dialogue between Deadpool and Wolverine. It's a fun, laugh-a-minute riot and a fitting farewell to Reynolds and Jackman's character that's an unsurprising billion-dollar success!

Baltasar Kormákur directed the perfect love story with no flaws to speak of. The tale of Kristópher trying to reconnect with his lost love, Miko, and the story of how they met was incredibly compelling, with stellar performances from Palmi Kormákur and Egill Ólafsson as Kristópher and Kôki and Yôko Narahashi as Miko. Perfect cinematography and direction, a legendary side character in Masatoshi Nakamura's Kutaragi-san, and a fantastic conclusion make this a film that deserved better at the Oscars.

Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage were fantastic as FBI Agent Lee Harker and the titular serial killer Longlegs, as the former chases the latter, who has supposed ties to the occult. The editing and direction from Osgood Perkins get you invested in this serial killer chase as much as Harker is, making this an experience that will stand as one of 2024's defining films!
