2024 Movies RANKED
2024 was an incredible year for movies filled with box office successes and flops, surprisingly solid or disappointing flicks, and breakout critical and commercial sensations. I saw more new releases than any year beforehand. Admittedly, for better or worse, it felt like Hollywood focused more on reviving IP than doing original works. However, that allowed moviegoers to check out more works from independent studios like A24, Neon, and Focus Features that they probably wouldn't have in any other year. "Longlegs," "Nosferatu," "Conclave," and "The Substance" all benefited from positive word-of-mouth and great marketing, leading to impressive box office runs. Even though IP became the focus, major studios still released remarkable features, such as "Wicked," "Dune: Part Two," "Challengers," and "The Fall Guy."
I remain hopeful that 2025 will be just as good, if not better, in the cinematic landscape. I'll rank all the 2024 films I see from worst to best through this list.
I have the winners for A.J. Kelly's Film Awards 2025, so why shouldn't I reveal them now? I'll be more organized when I do this next year. Anyway, here are the winners:
BEST ACTION
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
"Boy Kills World" came close, but the overall positive vibes I got with the action present here make it the ever-so-close winner.
BEST ACTOR
Sebastian Stan | A Different Man
I legit thought Chalamet's work for "Dune: Part Two" would be my favorite, but the transformative work Stan puts in for "A Different Man" needs to be seen to be believed.
BEST ACTRESS
Mikey Madison | Anora
If "Anora" is any indication, we need more leading roles for Madison ASAP.
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
Dune: Part Two | Greig Fraser
The grand feel of Fraser's work can't be understated.
BEST COMEDY
Anora
This movie provides fifteen minutes of comedy that beats every other comedic offering this year.
BEST DIRECTOR
Coralie Fargeat | The Substance
Fargeat expertly helmed a film with terrific performances, exceptional cinematography, and a wild narrative with an important message.
BEST DRAMA
A Different Man
It's a memorable take on the concepts of identity and character.
BEST EDITING
Hundreds of Beavers | Mike Cheslik
The film's editing is one of its most unforgettable attributes.
BEST HORROR
Nosferatu
"The Substance" may be more inventive, but I was surprised at how the horror worked for me here.
BEST PACING
Anora
Zero moments clash with the film's momentum.
BEST PICTURE
Anora
I heard that it was the best film of the year, and I agree with that statement.
BEST SCREENPLAY
The Substance | Coralie Fargeat
The most thought-provoking film of the year has the best screenplay.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Dennis Quaid | The Substance
He's darkly comedic and yet is the embodiment of greedy Hollywood executives.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Margaret Qualley | The Substance
Let's be honest; Qualley got snubbed.
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
Dune: Part Two
What other film created a world so lived-in and visually stunning?
LIVED UP TO MY HIGHEST EXPECTATIONS
Anora
A 99% on Rotten Tomatoes is no joke.
LIVED UP TO MY LOWEST EXPECTATIONS
Jackpot!
I knew it wouldn't be great, and I was right.
MOST DISAPPOINTING FILM
Joker: Folie à Deux
I don't think it's trash, but what a massive letdown!
MOST LIKELY TO WIN BEST PICTURE
Emilia Pérez
I want to be wrong, but this is statistically the most likely to win Best Picture.
OSCARS UPDATE: I'm thrilled that I was wrong with this prediction, and the film I wanted to win, "Anora," did.
MOST LIKELY TO WIN WORST PICTURE
Reagan
I haven't seen it, but the political side of the Razzies will most likely choose this.
RAZZIES UPDATE: Well, I was just plain wrong with my prediction - but "Madame Web" is trash, so I'm not mad.
MOST OVER-HATED FILM
Werewolves
A 4.4/10 on IMDb? Y'all don't like it this much?
MOST SURPRISING FILM
He Went That Way
I thought it'd be bad, I'm not going to lie.
MOST UNDERRATED FILM
The Fire Inside
It only had 19 reviews when I saw it.
SAFEST BET
A Complete Unknown
It's not Best Picture material, but you'll enjoy your time with it.
WORST ACTION
Madame Web
It barely has action; enough said.
WORST ACTOR
Aaron Eckhart | Chief of Station
You're not The Dark Knight, dude!
WORST ACTRESS
Nathalie Emmanuel | The Killer
Miscast is just a word. Uninvesting is another.
WORST COMEDY
Borderlands
Cringe.
WORST DIRECTOR
Eli Roth | Borderlands
I'm looking forward to "Thanksgiving 2," but this was not Roth's best hour.
WORST DRAMA
Here After
A story with potential shouldn't feel this misguided.
WORST EDITING
Madame Web | Leigh Folsom Boyd
The editing isn't even the worst thing about "Madame Web."
WORST HORROR
Here After
It tries to be horror while not wanting to be horror.
WORST PACING
Here After
When the only thing I take away from your movie is the desire for it to end, that's a problem.
WORST PICTURE
Borderlands
The definition of barely escaped development hell is miserable.
WORST SCREENPLAY
Uglies | Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor & Whit Anderson
Just bad.
WORST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Chase Stokes | Uglies
Bruh only has one expression the entire movie!
WORST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Laverne Cox | Uglies
Cox's ridiculous performance is indescribable.
WORST VISUAL EFFECTS
Borderlands
Lionsgate flushed $115M down the drain, and the film didn't offer the decency of subpar visual effects.
Even though I've done the Awards, I'll continue to update this list with every 2024 movie I see.
This list is entirely my opinion, so you don't have to agree. I'm just creating this for fun!
