  • Mass Effect 2 (2010)

    1. Mass Effect 2

    2010MVideo Game
    9.5 (22K)
After being revived from death and having to join a pro-human organization without a choice, Commander Shepard must assemble a team, battle a new threat, and make tough choices in order to save the galaxy from total annihilation once more.
    DirectorCasey HudsonStarsShohreh AghdashlooMaggie BairdAdam Baldwin
A terrific story, with some of the best characters in gaming and one of the bests worlds in gaming too. Solid gameplay, character interactions and action sets make it stick in the mind. The Suicide Mission is the stand out, making for the greatest ending in video-games, but the build up is just as great. A huge world that I explore about twice a year.

1 is a fantastic game with an excellent story, but the gameplay is weak and clunky. 3 is a fantastic game with great gameplay and a great story, but with a very poor ending. Andromeda is one of the worst things I have ever played.
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2003)

    2. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

    2003TVideo Game
    8.4 (5.7K)
A young prince with expert fighting skills acquires the Dagger of Time, and unknowingly releases the powerful Sands of Time with it. Now he is trapped in a palace with sand creatures and must undo the unfortunate deed he has done.
    DirectorPatrice DésiletsStarsYuri LowenthalJoanna WasickBarry Dennen
Tied with 1st spot. The perfect Arabian Nights tale. A great sense of adventure, coupled with great parkour action, a fantastic story and some of the best characters in all of gaming. The romance is the best of any game, and it's one of the only games I can finish in 1 or 2 sittings. The Sands machanic makes for some fun, and at times hilarious, trial and error gameplay.

The 2d version are pretty forgettable. The sequel Warrior Within has better melee gameplay and a fun story, but the tone is too dark for it be as fun. Two Thrones fixes the tonal issues but the story and characters are not as fun or likable. The three are great fun, but this beats the others easily. I haven't played the later games.
  • Spyro the Dragon (1998)

    3. Spyro the Dragon

    1998EVideo Game
    8.2 (2.5K)
A young cute purple dragon named Spyro sets out to free his dragon buddies, after they had fallen victim to the villainous Gnasty Gnorc, who has turned them into crystal statues.
    StarsClancy BrownCarlos AlazraquiMichael Gough
I love this purple guy! This is the game that got me into gaming, but even decades later, it still holds up. Simple but effective and fun gameplay among beautiful worlds and levels, make this an addictive collectothon. Stuart Copeland's score seals the deal.

This was followed the great but flawed Ripto's Revenge and the equally great Year of the Dragon. After that, Insomniac stopped making these and the series never really recovered, making trash after trash. Until it was remade that is.
  • Portal (2007)

    4. Portal

    2007TVideo Game
    9.1 (15K)
A test subject wakes up in a scientific facility controlled by a sadistic artificial intelligence and must escape with the help of the only instrument she has--a gun that makes portals.
    StarsEllen McLainMike PattonAlesia Glidewell
The best in Valve's already terrific output. Hilarious and clever, this is the ultimate puzzle game. The puzzles are hard to not unfair or impossible. GLaDOS is an amazing villain and I love how sarcastic the who thing feels.

2 is just as good, and is probably the one I've played more. I love Wheatley and Cave Johnson. Ultimately, it is more of the same, so this one got the position.
  • Terrence 'T.C.' Carson in God of War II (2007)

    5. God of War II

    2007MVideo Game
    9.2 (12K)
After being betrayed by the gods of Olympus and annulled of his divine powers, Kratos must embark on a journey to meet the Sisters of Fate and take his revenge on Olympus.
DirectorCory BarlogStarsLinda HuntTerrence 'T.C.' CarsonMichael Clarke Duncan
Feel like a god. This game has the most bosses, largest scale and best boss fight (the Sisters of Fate) of the whole series. The plot is fun and Kratos feels more powerful than before. It's a great adventure through mythical lands.

Honestly, this was a 5 way tie between this, 1, 3 and the 2017 game and Ragnarok. This series is the most consistently great of any game series I have played, with even the weakest (Chains of Olympus) being great.
  • Shadow of the Colossus (2005)

    6. Shadow of the Colossus

    2005TVideo Game
    9.2 (4.8K)
A young man brings a deceased woman to a forbidden land inhabited by colossal beings said to house the power to revive the dead.
    DirectorFumito UedaStarsKenji NojimaKazuhiro NakataKyôko Hikami
There is nothing else like this. A beautiful game that switches between tranquil journeys across a beautiful land and high tension action again enormous rock monsters. Each colossus is unique and exciting. The gameplay is fun and the story is packed full of emotion.

This game is also tied into Ico and The Last Guardian. Ico is a lovely, truly enjoyable fantasy game. Don't bother with The Last Guardian.
  • Resident Evil 4 (2005)

    7. Resident Evil 4

    2005MVideo Game
    9.2 (16K)
Six years after the events in Raccoon City, Leon Kennedy, now a federal agent, is sent to a rural part of Spain to rescue the U.S. President's kidnapped daughter, Ashley Graham from a sinister cult.
DirectorsShinji MikamiKuniomi MatsushitaStarsPaul MercierCarolyn LawrenceRino Romano
A camp, bmovie approach, that revitalise the series, while changing 3rd person shooters for good. The change of camera is welcome, as is the tone, which balances creepy and funny perfectly. It is what Resident Evil should have always been.

The series is one huge mixed bag. The worst ones (0 and 6) are among the worst games ever made. The best ones (this, 2 and 7) are among the best ever made. The rest fall everywhere in between.
  • Dark Souls (2011)

    8. Dark Souls

    2011MVideo Game
    9.1 (6.8K)
After narrowly escaping a doomed fate in an asylum, an undead warrior fights his way through the desolate remains of Lordran, once a sprawling utopia lead by the gods, to seek his purpose and fulfill a centuries old prophecy.
    DirectorHidetaka MiyazakiStarsAdam SoppAndy GathergoodBlake Ritson
The peak of From Software's career, and a game that changed the way we view difficulty these days. It's clunky at times and the hitboxes are questionable. But this is the only entry in the series I'd say was fair. A great world and atmosphere make for a great story of death and rebirth. The bosses are something special. There is a reason it is copied to this day.

Demons souls is a clunky mess. 2 was a lot of fun, but is clearly a B team effort. 3 is a bit too much of the same to be truly great. All have failed to feel fair to the player at some point, with summons being pretty much required for some of them.
  • King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie (2005)

    9. King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie

    2005TVideo Game
    7.4 (2.3K)
Based on the events of the motion picture King Kong (2005), this game allows the player to play as man, or as Kong. When the crew arrive at Skull Island, they are faced with many thrills and challenges throughout.
    DirectorMichel AncelStarsJamie BellJack BlackAdrien Brody
The best movie tie-in game ever. The Kong parts are fun, with trex battles and gorilla parkour aplenty. But it's as man where the game really shines. A terrifying atmosphere is coupled with the sense of a world choking to death. The gameplay is responsive and the visual haunting. It's a fun pulp adventure with an edge, and it is better than the film it is based on.
  • Hades (2018)

    10. Hades

    2018TVideo Game
    8.9 (3.1K)
Hades is a rogue-like dungeon crawler from the creators of Bastion and Transistor, in which you defy the god of death as you hack and slash your way out of the Underworld of Greek myth.
    StarsLogan CunninghamDarren KorbAvalon Penrose
A rogue lite that actually uses it to its advantage. A great and fun take on the mythology. Filled with lovable characters, while telling a deep and great story. Challenge is the point and failure is celebrated. A truly unique experience.
  • Hotline Miami (2012)

    11. Hotline Miami

    2012MVideo Game
    8.3 (2.7K)
A surrealist video game that dives into the mind of an assassin living within the neon gloss of the late 1980s of Miami.
    DirectorsJonatan SöderströmDennis Wedin
If Nicholas Winding Refn decided to get into game development, this would be the result. The most violent entry on this list, but for a purpose. Small, personal and artistic, this is a powerful game. It has action and challenge to satisfy and a soundtrack worth buying on its own.

2 is bit of a muchness for me. The soundtrack is still great and its fun overall. But it's over complicated and some of its violence feels pretty tasteless and unnecessary. Something this one does not suffer for.
  • Monster Hunter World: Iceborne (2019)

    12. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne

    2019TVideo Game
    8.1 (195)
An Elder Dragon awakens from deep within a new continent covered in snow and ice. The 5th fleet follow the dragon, discovering new monsters and species as the mysteries keep piling up.
    DirectorsDaisuke IchiharaKaname FujiokaYuya Tokuda
The biggest, most epic and action packed entry yet. Basically 2 games in 1, Iceborne has better gameplay, monsters and gear than any entry before it. It may not be to everyones taste, but for those who fancy going on the hunt, it is near flawless.

Monster Hunter has lived in its own bubble. It is what it is and it has never strayed from it. If it works for you, it's a fantastic series, if not then bit of a shame. Freedom Unite nearly had this spot, but World was the first entry to not have the series' famously clunky gameplay. Iceborne is World with more, simply put.
  • Yuri Lowenthal in Spider-Man (2018)

    13. Spider-Man

    2018TVideo Game
    9.2 (33K)
When a new villain threatens New York City, Peter Parker and Spider-Man's worlds collide. To save the city and those he loves, he must rise up and be greater.
    DirectorRyan SmithStarsYuri LowenthalTara PlattTravis Willingham
Far and away the best superhero game ever made. One of the few games that I do not fast travel in, all because of how much fun web swinging is. It improves on Arkham Asylums combat, and utilises the characters perfectly. The story is also in keeping with the comics, and is actually better than any of the movies.

Spiderman kinda fumbled for a while. For this one to be this good is incredible. The Miles Morales spin off is fun too, not as good. Can't wait for the next one as of writing.
  • Haruna Ikezawa and Brendan O'Brien in Crash Bandicoot: Warped (1998)

    14. Crash Bandicoot: Warped

    1998EVideo Game
    8.7 (3K)
Crash Bandicoot, Aku Aku and Coco travel through time to stop Dr. Cortex and Aku Aku's evil twin brother Uka Uka from enslaving Earth.
DirectorsAndrew S. GavinJason RubinStarsClancy BrownBrendan O'BrienMel Winkler
The crazy bandicoots last Naughty Dog outing is his best. Using timetravel as an excuse to go to these wonderful lands is a stroke of genius. Thanks to clever level design and character switching, its rare that 2 levels feel the same. All with a zany, tongue in cheek sense of humour. It's also pretty easy compared to others.

1 is great but a little too difficult to enjoy fully. 2 is better, but doesn't reach the heights of this one. CTR almost had this place in the list, for being a more chaotic Mario Cart. All the others are bland and forgettable, as nobody really knew what to do with Crash after this trilogy and CTR.
  • Metroid Prime (2002)

    15. Metroid Prime

    2002TVideo Game
    8.8 (2.3K)
A Space Pirate distress signal draws bounty hunter Samus Aran to Tallon IV, a world she discovers is being consumed by a terrible poison.
    DirectorMark PaciniStarsJennifer HaleVanessa Marshall
A game that should have failed, but beat the odds and became a classic. Still the best 3D metroidvania game ever made. A fantastic map to explore, with a great and creepy lore to it. Enemies and bosses are fun, and you feel so powerful as Samus. All in a game without dialogue.

I haven't played many, but those I have are all fun and well made (I hear that Other M is to be avoided). I appreciate the nods to Alien throughout, and I found the twist of Samus' gender to be really cool. They still have yet to top Prime though.
  • Nolan North in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (2016)

    16. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

    2016TVideo Game
    9.4 (40K)
Thrown back into the dangerous underworld he'd tried to leave behind, Nathan Drake must decide what he's willing to sacrifice to save the ones he loves.
DirectorsNeil DruckmannBruce StraleyStarsNolan NorthTroy BakerRichard McGonagle
More grounding that previous entries actually helped this one. The characters are relatable for a change and the story is air tight and satisfying. The action and gameplay is as silly and fun as ever, and the hook is something I never realised I wanted. The ending always makes me smile.

1 was clunky, but made for a great pulpy adventure story. 2 was the same but no longer clunky and bigger (with a fantastic train level). 3 sucked, same as 2 but much blander and without a train level. Lost Legacy is a surprisingly great entry, and pretty on par with this.
  • Doom (2016)

    17. Doom

    2016MVideo Game
    8.5 (8K)
On Mars, a massive research facility tapping energy from hell has been overwhelmed by demonic forces. As the last DOOM Slayer, you have been resurrected to do one thing: to cleanse this world and send them back to where they came from.
DirectorMarty StrattonStarsDarin De PaulKevin SchonAbby Craden
The Mad Max Fury Road of gaming. Graphically incredible and breakneck paced, this is the king of the shooter. All the weapons and enemies are fun and interesting. The gore is glorious and the lack of cutscenes (just 2 the whole game) make it the ultimate switch on and have fun game.

Doom and 2 are great and important games. Sadly this makes them feel quaint and obsolete. 3 took some risks, not all worked. The same goes for Eternal. Both feel like they missed the mark and lost their way, even if the games themselves aren't bad.
  • Dino Crisis (1999)

    18. Dino Crisis

    1999MVideo Game
    7.8 (1.7K)
On a remote island, scientist Doctor Kirk has been exploring the deeper reaches of science. After disaster strikes, commando Regina and her three teammates are deployed on the island to search for answers.
    DirectorShinji MikamiStarsStephanie MorgensternRichard YearwoodAdrian Truss
The best survival horror game of the 90s, and boy how 90s it is. Resident Evil by way of Jurassic Park, the most basic of enemy is formidable here. It requires clever puzzling and planning to beat. But it still works brilliantly as an action game. The music is one of gaming's most underrated.

This series has been on ice for some time now. While 2 is just as good as this one, for very different reasons, 3 was the kiss of death. Not lacking in a creative idea, but it's so boring and has the worst camera in gaming history. Hopefully the series will come back, but I doubt it.
  • Silent Hill 2 (2001)

    19. Silent Hill 2

    2001MVideo Game
    9.4 (8.5K)
After receiving a letter from his late wife, from Silent Hill, James Sunderland heads towards the town to search for her, only to come across a terrifying road of truth and redemption.
DirectorsTakayuki KobayashiMasashi TsuboyamaStarsGuy CihiMonica HorganDonna Burke
Truly terrifying. A deeply disturbing game, dripping with atmosphere and full of depressive and sexual undertones. When the 'bad ending' makes for the most satisfying one, you know its a rough ride. The monsters are iconic and the score is amazing. For the full effect, do not play the HD remastered version.

The series lost its way when it moved to USA developers, becoming grim torture porn or goth fantasy. The Japan developed one's are better but not as good as this one. 1 and 3 are let down by poor stories involving cults and 4 (the 2nd best one) has a great story but horrible gameplay.
  • Far Cry 3 (2012)

    20. Far Cry 3

    2012MVideo Game
    8.8 (23K)
While skydiving, Jason Brody and his friends land on an island overrun by pirates, where Jason is torn between fighting for the Rakyat resistance and rescuing his friends.
DirectorsLaurent BernierRobert Darryl PurdyStarsLane EdwardsAlex HarrouchMylène Dinh-Robic
A game that started a new genre of sandbox (now sadly overused). This fun, action packed and character driven game is also super gross and sleazy. Its as addictive and the products you destroy during its campaign. An excellent hero and one of gaming's greatest villains helps out a lot.

Aside from this and the Blood Dragon spin off, I don't like the Far Cry series. They're often bland and miss the points that made this one special. Far Cry 2 at least tried, but it feels like a demo for this one.
  • The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (2004)

    21. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay

    2004MVideo Game
    8.6 (3.6K)
Set before the events of Pitch Black (2000), this game tells the story of how Richard B. Riddick obtained his ability to see in the dark.
    DirectorTom KeeganStarsVin DieselCole HauserKristin Lehman
A video-game that eclipsed the movie it was tied into. Visceral and punchy (pun not intended) melee combat, and great stealth make this an awesome gaming equivalent of Escape from New York and Fortress. The cast is amazing too.

The games follow the same pattern as the movies. Pitch Black was great. The Chronicles of Riddick was self indulgent and sucked. Escape from Butcher Bay is great. Assault on Dark Athena is self indulgent and sucked.
  • Hank Azaria, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Dan Castellaneta, and Yeardley Smith in The Simpsons: Hit & Run (2003)

    22. The Simpsons: Hit & Run

    2003TVideo Game
    8.3 (3.2K)
When mysterious surveillance equipment, mind control cola and aliens terrorize Springfield, only the Simpsons can find out why and save the town.
    StarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy Cartwright
The best GTA clone is actually a parody of GTA. Despite some small maps, this game runs very smoothly and is fun to play. The perfect recreation of the Simpsons and their humour is what seals the deal here.

It simply stands head and shoulders over any other Simpsons game.
  • BioShock (2007)

    23. BioShock

    2007MVideo Game
    9.1 (23K)
In 1960, a lone survivor of a plane crash named Jack discovers an abandoned underwater utopia, only to find out that the mystery behind its creation is much more sinister than he first believed.
    DirectorKen LevineStarsJohn AhlinGreg BaldwinJane Beller
The perfect mix of existential philosophy and mindless action. A great dystopia world, with a creepy atmosphere and horrifying enemies. Guns and superpowers aplenty. It will even have you pondering what it means to be human.

I like the other 2 as well. 2 puts more focus on action, while Infinite focuses on the existential stuff. Both do well with what they set out to do, but this one already did both at the same time.
  • Doug Cockle and Jacek Rozenek in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)

    24. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

    2015MVideo Game
    9.6 (37K)
The monster slayer Geralt of Rivia must find his adoptive daughter who is being pursued by the Wild Hunt, and prevent the White Frost from bringing about the end of the world.
    DirectorKonrad TomaszkiewiczStarsDoug CockleDenise GoughJo Wyatt
What we all hope for in modern gaming. Its huge and completely polished, a brilliant mix. The world is great and the characters all likeable. Gameplay is a little complex, but easy enough to nail down. Soon as you finish the tutorial, you are in for a treat.

That I love this one is a surprise as I don't like the other 2, which are over complicated and worse stories. The novels they're all based on are good though.
  • Scott Lawrence, Temuera Morrison, Rachel Reenstra, and James Arnold Taylor in Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005)

    25. Star Wars: Battlefront II

    2005TVideo Game
    8.8 (7.7K)
Play as the foot soldier of the galaxy's greatest factions and wage war across countless planets.
DirectorEric 'Giz' GewirtzStarsBob BergenChristina RumbleyCorey Burton
Plenty of fond memories. Great arenas, fun character selection, fun space battles and surprisingly responsive AI. It's everything a Star Wars fan could want.

The first game is fun, and I prefer the visuals in it, but the gameplay was clunky and it lacked a campaign. The 2 reboot games suck. For clarity, Jedi Fallen Order nearly took this one's place.
