This list isn't in much of an order right now, apologies for that.

  • Robert Patrick and Scott Haze in What Josiah Saw (2021)

    1. What Josiah Saw

    20212h70Metascore
    6.2 (4.9K)
A family with buried secrets reunite at a farmhouse after two decades to pay for their past sins.
    DirectorVincent GrashawStarsRobert PatrickNick StahlScott Haze
Exceptional multi-genre film. Absolutely not what I had expected, and all the better for it! Top-tier work from all involved; acting, directing, cinematography, writing, sound, etc.

It very much has the feel of a Tarantino or Coen brothers film, but mashed together with a modern "elevated" horror movie. It's very drama-led and has some wild tonal shifts, so be prepared for a slow, character-driven film that may be too light on horror for some.
  • Rakel Lenora Petersen Fløttum in The Innocents (2021)

    2. The Innocents

During the bright Nordic summer, a group of children reveal their dark and mysterious powers when the adults aren't looking. In this original and gripping supernatural thriller, playtime takes a dangerous turn.
DirectorEskil VogtStarsRakel Lenora Petersen FløttumAlva Brynsmo RamstadSam Ashraf
A brilliant drama that plays out a bit like the 'X-Men', except with kids, and in a realistic way.

It has a gentle pace, but is never boring. Great acting, especially from the young cast, and very good production values. An exceptionally well made film that demands a viewing.

Warning: Some scenes are very hard to watch. There's a scene featuring animal cruelty which I found mortifying, I imagine some folks would switch the film off at that point, as I nearly did.
  • Rebecca Hall in Resurrection (2022)

    3. Resurrection

Margaret's life is in order. She is capable, disciplined and successful. Everything is under control until David returns - that is - carrying with him the horrors of Margaret's past.
    DirectorAndrew SemansStarsRebecca HallTim RothGrace Kaufman
A slow-burning psychological drama. Absolutely harrowing and impeccably acted. Some have found it too slow, but it had me on the edge of my seat throughout! It's pretty heavy going tho, the main themes are psychological trauma and extreme gaslighting, it's definitely not a "good time".
  • Mia Goth in Pearl (2022)

    4. Pearl

    20221h 43mR76Metascore
    7.0 (141K)
In 1918, a young woman on the brink of madness pursues stardom in a desperate attempt to escape the drudgery, isolation, and lovelessness of life on her parents' farm.
    DirectorTi WestStarsMia GothDavid CorenswetTandi Wright
Fantastic drama-horror hybrid with a superb aesthetic and a blinding lead performance by Mia Goth. Won't be for everyone, but I thought it was great!

I actually preferred this to 'X', to which this film is the prequel.
  • Ralph Fiennes, John Leguizamo, Janet McTeer, Paul Adelstein, Reed Birney, Nicholas Hoult, Judith Light, Jay Shadix, Peter Grosz, Hong Chau, Rob Yang, Aimee Carrero, Arturo Castro, Mark St. Cyr, and Anya Taylor-Joy in The Menu (2022)

A young couple travels to a remote island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises.
    DirectorMark MylodStarsRalph FiennesAnya Taylor-JoyNicholas Hoult
Absolutely loved this film! It's more of a mystery-thriller with some horror elements than a straight-forward horror flick, so you may want to adjust your expectations accordingly.

Excellent cast, unique premise and great production values!
  • Aisha Dee in Sissy (2022)

    6. Sissy

Teen best friends Cecilia and Emma run into each other after a decade. Cecilia is invited to Emma's bachelorette weekend, where she gets stuck in a remote cabin with her high school bully and gets a taste for revenge.
DirectorsHannah BarlowKane SenesStarsAisha DeeHannah BarlowEmily De Margheriti
Really good Aussie thriller (or it may be from New Zealand, I can't remember off the top of my head - apologies!) that's very similar to Pearl, also released in 2022. Very violent with a sharp sense of humour. Top stuff!

If you liked Pearl, you'll really like this, too!
  • Soft & Quiet (2022)

    7. Soft & Quiet

    20221h 32mR82Metascore
    6.2 (12K)
Playing out in real time, an elementary school teacher organizes a mixer of like-minded women, when she encounters a woman from her past, leading to a volatile chain of events.
DirectorBeth de AraújoStarsStefanie EstesOlivia LuccardiDana Millican
    Uncomfortable viewing, and quite horrifying.

This is a home invasion thriller that's done in a 'cinema verite' style, which is quite refreshing and makes the film incredibly engrossing and shocking. It definitely stays with you after watching...

Note: This is an extreme 'thriller', and although it's quite horrifying, I wouldn't really class it as a 'horror' film, personally. Just FYI.
  • Georgina Campbell in Barbarian (2022)

    8. Barbarian

A woman staying at an Airbnb discovers that the house she has rented is not what it seems.
    DirectorZach CreggerStarsGeorgina CampbellBill SkarsgårdJustin Long
Quality film! Very unexpected, surprising and entertaining. Some good scares, gore and a bit of humour. Also has a few nods to 70's and 80's exploitation flicks, I won't say which ones, you'll know when you see it.
  • Mia Goth in X (2022)

    9. X

    20221h 45mR80Metascore
    6.5 (209K)
In 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to make an adult film in a rural Texas farm, but when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the crew find themselves fighting for their lives.
    DirectorTi WestStarsMia GothJenna OrtegaBrittany Snow
Nice slice of 70's exploitation-style weirdness. Leans more towards gross and uncomfortable than scary, so if that's your bag...

Followed in the same year by the prequel 'Pearl'.
  • Prey (2022)

    10. Prey

    20221h 40mR71Metascore
    7.1 (249K)
Naru, a skilled warrior of the Comanche Nation, fights to protect her tribe against one of the first highly-evolved Predators to land on Earth.
    DirectorDan TrachtenbergStarsAmber MidthunderDakota BeaversDane DiLiegro
While it lacks the sweaty claustrophobia of the original 'Predator', this prequel is a huge step in the right direction. One Predator and one "prey", with the prey having to rely on wits and cunning rather than brute-force to survive. That's what a Predator film should be, and the makers of this film understand that ...it only took 30 years for someone to get it right!

It loses some points due to some really obvious CGI, and there's lots of it.
  • Sarah Lind and Josh Ruben in A Wounded Fawn (2022)

    11. A Wounded Fawn

    20221h 31mTV-MA75Metascore
    5.5 (3.9K)
A serial killer brings an unsuspecting new victim on a weekend getaway to add another body to his ever-growing count. She's buying into his faux charms, and he's eagerly lusting for blood. What could possibly go wrong?
    DirectorTravis StevensStarsSarah LindJosh RubenMalin Barr
Another wonderfully off-kilter horror film that starts in one place and ends up somewhere completely different! Weird, funny and with a very nice 70's aesthetic, as well.

Some have bemoaned the huge tonal shift that occurs, preferring the more grounded first act to what comes next, but I swung the other way. Regardless, this is not your average horror movie, so be prepared for something a little different!

Note: This really needed / needs to have a 'comedy' tag. While not exactly 'Zoolander' it really does have lots of genuinely amusing moments.
  • Nope (2022)

    12. Nope

The residents of a lonely gulch in inland California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.
    DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaKeke PalmerBrandon Perea
An entertaining, light-hearted, sci-fi mystery film with a dash of horror. Solid film, very 'Twilight Zone'. Recommended!
  • Mad God (2021)

    13. Mad God

    20211h 23mUnrated80Metascore
    6.8 (18K)
The Assassin travels through a nightmare underworld of tortured souls, ruined cities and wretched monstrosities forged from the primordial horrors of the unconscious mind of Phil Tippett, the world's preeminent stop-motion animator.
    DirectorPhil TippettStarsAlex CoxNiketa RomanSatish Ratakonda
A visually stunning fever dream! Nightmarish, grotesque and occasionally darkly comical, this insane animated film is truly something to behold.

On the downside, aside from vague themes of creation and destruction (as well as mans brutality to man), there's very little narrative to latch on to, which is a shame. It makes the film feel longer than it is.
  • Fedja van Huêt, Morten Burian, and Sidsel Siem Koch in Speak No Evil (2022)

    14. Speak No Evil

    20221h 37mNot Rated78Metascore

A Danish family visits a Dutch family they met on a holiday. What was supposed to be an idyllic weekend slowly starts unraveling as the Danes try to stay polite in the face of unpleasantness.
DirectorChristian TafdrupStarsMorten BurianSidsel Siem KochFedja van Huêt
Excellent thriller with a very disturbing climax. Not exactly a barrel of laughs, but a very well-made film.

Some complain the two main characters don't react to their situation(s) in a realistic way, but speaking as a European, this is very accurate to the social-etiquette of some European cultures. Extreme politeness, even in very uncomfortable and unpleasant situations, is a trait that is seen as noble and should be adhered to at all times. This film obviously takes that to the extreme (and beyond), but that's the point. At least that's what I took away from it...
  • The Coffee Table (2022)

Really good cannibalism film. A good watch if you can "stomach" it!
  • Laura Galán in Piggy (2022)

    DirectorCarlota PeredaStarsLaura GalánRichard HolmesCarmen Machi
    Drama-thriller-horror hybrid.

Interesting mix of elements that make for a refreshing thriller. Think of Carrie without any supernatural elements and you'll be close to Piggy.

If you can, choose the subtitled version with original Spanish audio, the English dubbing is really, really bad.
  • Deadstream (2022)

    18. Deadstream

A disgraced internet personality attempts to win back his followers by livestreaming one night alone in a haunted house. But when he accidentally upsets a vengeful spirit, his big comeback event becomes a real-time fight for his life.
DirectorsJoseph WinterVanessa WinterStarsJoseph WinterMelanie StoneJason K. Wixom
Fun film! Found footage horror mixed with The Evil Dead. A few unexpected scares and lots of goofy monsters, all played for laughs.

The humour was a bit irritating at first, but the more I watched the more I warmed to the lead character and the films style of humour.

Well made drama-thriller that's unique enough to stand out in it's sub-genre of horror films.

DirectorsJustin BensonAaron MoorheadStarsAaron MoorheadJustin BensonSarah Adina Smith
Quirky sci-fi film with very little horror. Works well as a character-driven drama, as the sci-fi stuff is more window dressing, and the horror is not really there at all.

A very decent watch if you like oddball indie flicks, tho!
