  • Max Linder in The Three Must-Get-Theres (1922)

    6. The Three Must-Get-Theres

    192258mNot Rated
    6.9 (672)
This delightful burlesque of Alexandre Dumas' famous adventure narrative (and then-leading screen swashbuckler Douglas Fairbanks' hit films) represented one of writer/director/star Max Linder's attempts to conquer Hollywood on its own turf. He'd been an enormous star in early silent cinema, influencing the style of such subsequent silent comedy luminaries as Charles Chaplin and Buster Keaton. But his health suffered after he was gassed fighting for France in World War I. Despite the support of Chaplin himself (among others), his subsequent career in America never reached the popular heights he had at home. The commercial failure of this final U.S. effort seems particularly bewildering now, since THE THREE MUST-GET-THERES holds up so well. This spoof has the antic star as Dart-in-Again, a rapier-wielding dandy with a lovelorn horse (pining for the cow it left behind in the country) and a tendency to make an idiot of himself whilst attempting to conquer the forces of tyranny. Making scant effort to hide its incongruous modern Southern California backdrops, the movie is full of gags both slapstick and absurdist. Critics gratefully received it at the time. Audiences? Not so much. - Dennis Harvey

Are today's advertising photographers continuing in the tradition of 17th century Flemish painters? This is one theory director Harun Farocki poses in his documentary STILL LIFE. According to Harun Farocki, today's photographers also depict objects from everyday life - the "still life". The filmmaker illustrates this intriguing hypothesis with three documentary sequences showing photographers at work creating a contemporary STILL LIFE: a cheese-board, beer glasses and an expensive watch.

    22. Portrait of a Young Man in Three Movements

    193154m
    6.4 (171)
Without sound, in three movements. Title cards declare that what a person likes and his manner of liking them reveals character. There are long looks at forms and rhythms. The film begins and ends with the sea: the tide coming in, small breakers running up on a beach. In the first movement, rocks appear, light and dark play on water. From time to time, machines turn. The light makes dappled patterns. In the second movement, a leafy tree branch gives way to water then shots of the sky and clouds. The third movement returns to the shore, with long takes looking out far, past the beach to outcroppings under the horizon. Small breakers interrupt the patterns of light on water.

In the evening, the mansion is occupied by Bolsheviks led by Anton's son, Andrii. Anton doesn't share his son's political ideas and restrains himself for showing his love for him. Accidentally the young master witnesses Andrii finding the treasures hidden in the garden. When the White Army returns to the city the following day, the landlord's son gives Andrii away to counterintelligence, and Andrii is executed as a Bolshevik agent. In despair, Anton sets fire to the estate, along with the partying White Army generals.
