A quiet August weekend kicked off Thursday night with the martial arts movie Birth of the Dragon taking in $200,000, and All Saints, a faith-based film from Sony's Affirm label that is starting off with a smaller release, taking in $70,000. Weinstein Co.'s animated Leap! also opens wide this weekend.
This weekend is expected to be one of the sleepier of the summer, with all three new films opening behind holdover The Hitman's Bodyguard, Lionsgate's action comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson. The pic should have no problem repeating a No. 1 finish in its second weekend.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this weekend is shaping up to be even quieter at the box office than last week was.

The dog days of August are just that at the U.S. box office.
This weekend, a trio of smaller offerings enter the fray — The Weinstein Co.'s animated Leap!, martial arts pic Birth of the Dragon and All Saints, a faith-based film from Sony's Affirm label that is only opening in 700-plus locations. Even if they do solid business in their own right, tracking shows Leap! grossing the most of the three, or $4 million-$5 million, as summer revenue slips even farther behind from last year.

It was a pretty sweet day for the Kardashian family!
Kim Kardashian West and Kourtney Kardashian spent the day at the Museum of Ice Cream in Los Angeles, California on May 11, bringing along their little ones for a day of sprinkles, popsicles and fun.
Kourtney and daughter Penelope certainly enjoyed the museum's iconic life-size sprinkle pool, while Kim and daughter North took a call in the bubblegum pink room. It appeared the group was filming the visit for season 14 of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, so we'll have to wait and see if fans will get more of their adventures there!

Día De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead in English, though it’s referred to simply as Día de Metros in Mexico) is one of the world’s most misunderstood holidays. Because it’s celebrated within range of Halloween, and features an assortment of macabre imagery and costumes, some people assume it’s just “Mexican Halloween,” while attempts to co-opt the holiday have been repeated through history. (Disney attempted to trademark the term to market a film in 2013.)

Halloween is now the second-biggest consumer-spending holiday in the Us (after Christmas), which makes you wonder—how did a holiday based on dressing up and being scary achieve not only massive national appeal, but now international demand (yep, the Americanized version of Halloween has been successfully exported to countries around the globe)?
The American version of Halloween has an interesting evolution. Early Puritan settlers were staunchly against Halloween and considered it far too dark and devilish. However, throughout the 19th century, immigrants from Ireland and Scotland introduced the States to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samhain), which involved wearing scary costumes and lighting fires to scare away tormenting spirits.
Being the “melting pot” that is the Us, Halloween became a mix of traditions from Samhain and the Christian “All Saints’ Day,” when Saints are honored and people gather to pray for the recently departed.

Welcome to Preacher, boys and girls. I published a review of the early episodes last week, and I have specific thoughts on the premiere coming up just as soon as I want you to feel like you smell... "Jesus, what kind of preacher are you?" -Cassidy AMC screened the Preacher pilot for critics back at the January press tour. Critic conversations after a mass screening are always fun, but this one was especially interested, because there was a clear divide in the room between those who knew the comics and those who didn't, which can be more or less summed up like this: Comics reader critic: "That was almost nothing like the comic, but I think I liked it?" Non-reader critic: "I think I liked it, but I have no idea what the hell I just saw." Though I belong to the former group, my goal is to treat Preacher...

Hell's Kitchen: Soul stew image likely from the 1922 Benjamin Christensen horror classic 'Häxan / Witchcraft Through the Ages.' Day of the Dead post: Cinema's Top Five Scariest Living Dead We should all be eternally grateful to the pagans, who had the foresight to come up with many (most?) of the overworked Western world's religious holidays. Thanks to them, besides Easter, Christmas, New Year's, and possibly Mardi Gras (a holiday in some countries), we also have Halloween, All Saints' Day, and the Day of Dead. The latter two are public holidays in a number of countries with large Catholic populations. Since today marks the end of the annual Halloween / All Saints' Day / Day of the Dead celebrations, I'm posting my revised and expanded list of the movies' Top Five Scariest Living Dead. Of course, by that I don't mean the actors listed below were dead when the movies were made.

Last night's series finale of Nurse Jackie left viewers unsure of whether the title character lived or died. (Spoilers ahead.) Everything was looking rosy for Jackie Peyton but, at the party for her closing All Saints Hospital, she overdosed and it wasn't clear if she'd survived or not.
For his part, executive producer and showrunner Clyde Phillips likes to think that she survived but the ending was left open on purpose. He told Variety, "I welcome that conversation (about the finale)... I hope the show will be talked about in a healthy way for a while after it ends."

Edie Falco's "Nurse Jackie" ended last night after seven seasons on Showtime. What happened? Your call.
*Spoilers ahead*
The series finale showed addict Jackie continuing her spiral, snorting several lines of heroin, collapsing and looking like she might die -- as Zoey (Merritt Wever) stroked her hair and told her she's "good." So here's the big question for showrunner Clyde Phillips: Did Jackie die? Here's what he told The Hollywood Reporter:
It is left to the viewers to figure out. One of the reasons why there's a question is because Edie Falco is so brilliant. Imagine lying on the floor in them middle of 60 people with a camera in your face and giving just enough of an eye flutter and just enough of a move of her lips that you think, "Maybe!" But you don't know. I personally think she's alive. Others don't. We had a long conversation...

"Nurse Jackie" has concluded its seven-season run on Showtime. I have a few thoughts on the finale, followed by a long conversation with showrunner Clyde Phillips, coming up just as soon as this door gets locked for the first time in centuries... "Nurse Jackie" is a show that, by the nature of its lying drug addict protagonist and the world she lived in — and the fact that it was an ongoing series that brought Showtime several awards along the way — was always going to be repetitive on some level: Jackie does something stupid, gets caught, finds a way out of it, and on and on. The series' better periods — including much of this final season — involved Jackie being forced to deal with the consequences of her actions, even if the promise of renewal brought with it the promise of another escape and another backslide. (Phillips talks about this early in the interview.

[Warning: This story contains spoilers from the series finale of Showtime's Nurse Jackie.] Showtime bid farewell to one of its most beloved anti-heroes Sunday when Nurse Jackie — and its All Saints Hospital — closed its doors for good after seven seasons. The final episode, as showrunner Clyde Phillips previously noted, came full circle with the original pilot and opened with Jackie (Edie Falco) in church asking for God to "make me good." Those words would come back in the final moments of the series when Zoey (Merritt Wever) would mutter them back to Jackie, who had passed

What a long, strange drip it’s been. Over Nurse Jackie’s seven seasons, countless IV bags have been sidled up alongside seizing patients, an incalculable number of gaping wounds have been sutured, and, yes, hundreds of little pills have been crushed and snorted. At the center of it all has been Edie Falco as All Saints Hospital head nurse Jackie Peyton, an addict, mother, and caretaker constantly teetering between total control and the absolute lack of it. Through the series’ many melodramatic narrative twists, Falco has centered the medical dramedy with a performance committed enough to her alter ego’s literal highs and lows to make you ask, “Carmela, who?” And as the series finale nears this Sunday at 9 p.m., we caught up with Ms. Falco one last time and asked her to reflect on Jackie’s most memorable scenes since debuting on our screens in 2009, from busting...

Nurse Jackie recap Season 7 Episode 6 “High Noon” (original airdate May 17, 2015) We get a bit of a psychedelic start to this episode, where Jackie plunges (literally) into her fridge chasing the only item in it — a bottle of pills. It was a craving dream and the start of her insomnia, which brings her to All Saints three hours early. There she finds a very hung over Dr. Prince. But he seems to have the cure for both of them. Jackie (Edie Falco) and Prince (Tony Shalhoub) share some one-on-one time while rehydrating (true nurse style) compliments … Continue reading →

She awakes to stay on task – she needs to be at church with her patient Vivian, who she’s determined to get back on her feet (despite the fact that she’s using Vivian’s drugs for a secondary source of income, selling them to her former dealer). I have been engrossed for the last week in Infidel, an autobiography that chronicles the life and times of political activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali and how she became who and what she is. Ms. Ali will be familiar to those readers of this column, who, like me, strive to never miss an episode of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher and MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews. She has also appeared on Fox News, CNN, and just about every news organization around the world – though I don’t know if she has ever been invited onto Al-Jazeera, even here on the U.S. version.
But if not, here’s a short version of Ms. Ali’s biography. Born into a traditional Muslim family in Somalia in 1969, her father was Hirsi Magan Isse, a leader of the Somali Salvation Democratic Front and who was actively involved in the Somalian Revolution against the Siad Barre government.

Cast your minds back to 2002 - a time when Pop Idols didn't need to have The X Factor, Fifty Shades of Grey were just colours on a paint sampler chart and David Beckham was a mere international superstar rather than global megastar.
Bend It Like Beckham, with a modest estimated budget of £3.7 million, opened that same year and became a critical and commercial success - breaking box office records and scoring BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations, as well as making household names of many of its stars.

Natalia Kills has once again addressed her and husband Willy Moon's highly-publicised firing from New Zealand's X Factor.
The couple were roundly condemned and then dropped by the series when their harsh criticism of contestant Joe Irvine went viral last weekend.

The singer has since had a written exchange with Billboard in which she made allegations that reality television producers frequently stage events to boost ratings.

Footage of Natalia Kills and Willy Moon shocked TV viewers this week - and not just because we discovered where former All Saints star Melanie Blatt is now.
No, Kills and Moon were both fired as judges on X Factor New Zealand after launching a vicious tirade at a wannabe singer, labelling his performance "disgusting" and "absolutely artistically atrocious".
They're not the first ones to completely insult the contestants standing in front of them. It's just that this lot - somehow - got away with it…

In one of the most shocking things we've ever seen on television, Holland's Got Talent judge Gordon Heuckeroth spouted some horrific racial drivel to contestant Xiao Wang during the 2013 edition of the programme.

Even Gordon's fellow judges challenged him on the comment...

Natalia Kills and Willy Moon have both been fired from The X Factor Nz, following harsh criticism of a contestant.
Kills, who appeared on the singing competition's judging panel alongside her husband, took offence to contestant Joe Irvine's live performance and called it "disgusting" and "absolutely artistically atrocious".
The show's New Zealand producer MediaWorks described the pair's comments as "unacceptable" and they have left The X Factor Nz "effective immediately".
"Last night on X Factor both Kills and Moon made comments that were completely unacceptable," chief executive Mark Weldon explained.
"While the judges on X Factor are expected to provide critiques of the performances, we will not tolerate such destructive tirades from any of the judges.
"Contestants put their all into this competition and they should expect to receive feedback and criticism that is professional and constructive.
"We no longer have confidence that Kills and Moon are the right people...

X Factor New Zealand's live shows kicked off with a bang on Sunday night when judge Natalia Kills ... well, went in for the kill.
Following his performance of "Cry Me a River," contestant Joe Irvine received a critique more severe and more undeserving than anything Simon Cowell has ever dished out.
"Ladies and gentleman, I'm just going to state the obvious: We have a doppelgänger in our midst," began Kills, 28, whose real name is Natalia Noemi Cappuccini-Sinclair.
