Romero forever immortalized Pennsylvania’s Monroeville Mall as an iconic tourist destination for horror fans, filming his classic Dawn of the Dead inside the still-operational mall. On this special episode of Corpse Club, guest host and Daily Dead Senior Contributor James Doherty celebrates 50 years of George A. Romero's The Crazies and reflects on the viral horror film's enduring and timely impact by speaking with Richard France (who plays Dr. Watts in the film), Professor Tony Williams (the author of The Cinema of George A. Romero: Knight of the Living Dead), and Assistant Professor of Sociology Danielle Denardo, who utilizes zombie apocalypse films as a teaching tool in her lessons.

Are zombies really that memorable? When you think about it, today’s undead munchers are not exactly an interesting crowd since all they do between meals is wander around in a trance. The pre Romero vegetarians are even worse, as they spend most of their time under the thumb of a zombie master, although on the odd occasion they do rebel against their tyrannical leader.
Zombie movies are a dime a dozen these days, and apart from a few moderately successful variations, they haven’t progressed beyond the flesh-eating antics of Night of the Living Dead (1968). But on the odd occasion a couple of zombies stand out from the faceless crowd of walking corpses, and what some these ghouls lack in personality, they make up for in other ways.
So here’s a list of ten memorable zombies that stood out for me, as an avid horror movie fan.

To mark the release of Trollied Season 3 on DVD 30th December, we’ve got 3 copies to give away.
Now into its third series, Trollied is set in Valco and finds the funny in one of our most familiar surroundings and focuses on the types of characters we all recognise: bored checkout staff, ineffectual managers and a range of customers, from the irate to the downright bizarre.
Released by FremantleMedia International as a 2 disc set, Trollied Series 3 is out on DVD December 30th. It stars BAFTA and Golden Globe nominee Jane Horrocks (Absolutely Fabulous, Little Voice) as Julie and sees the arrival of Valco’s new Head Of Strategy, Richard France (Chris Geere), sent to modernise the store. Young, dynamic and barking mad, France’s ideas might just clash with Gavin’s (Jason Watkins) safe and by-the-book approach. Relationships will be pushed to the limits as Trollied’s favourite couples face...

Chris Geere downed eight coffees every morning before filming 'Trollied'. The 32-year-old star plays over-enthusiastic ideas man Richard France in the Sky1 sitcom - which revolves around the lives of employees at fictional supermarket Valco - and he took in copious amounts of caffeine to give him a sufficient energy boost to help portray his crazy character. He said: ''I had a very strange process every day and everyone was so generous. I had to have so much energy that I used to have seven or eight coffees before we started in the morning. ''I was given the brief of the whole...

Another February opening, another horror remake. However, unlike Universal’s The Wolf Man, which is justly regarded as a classic of horror cinema, George Romero’s original take on The Crazies is, well, not. This is not to say that the film is without its effective moments, clever ideas, and the subtle jabs at American society that Romero is well known for — but 37 years down the road, it’s more notable for the role it plays in Romero’s evolution as a storyteller, falling as it does between the brilliant Night of the Living Dead and its hugely influential sequel, Dawn of the Dead. Not coincidentally, the ‘73 version explores themes similar to both of these seminal zombie flicks, but it’s burdened by far too many stagey and talky scenes, a score consisting almost entirely of a martial drumbeat that wears thin after the first 30 seconds, and a performance by...

Chicago – Before you go and check out Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell in Breck Eisner’s remake of George A. Romero’s “The Crazies” this weekend, pick up the original on Blu-ray from the great indie horror house Blue Underground. “The Crazies” is a fantastic example of low budget horror filmmaking and ’70s paranoia from one of the genre’s best directors.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
1973’s “The Crazies” came at a difficult time in Romero’s career. He had yet to recapture the magic of 1968’s “Night of the Living Dead” and this would be the third film in a row that didn’t quite connect with audiences (after 1971’s “There’s Always Vanilla” and 1972’s “Jack’s Wife”). Of course, the late ’70s would feature a resurgence for the horror auteur with “Martin” and one of the best genre films of all time in “Dawn of the Dead...

After viewing many trailers for the upcoming remake of George Romero's The Crazies, the only thing that continually makes us nervous is the director, Breck Eisner. Son of Disney's Michael Eisner, Breck has the awful Sahara under his belt as a director as well as a few television episodes. While a "name" director is far from necessary when remaking The Crazies, it's that sticking point of Sahara that lingers and bothers. In a recent interview, Eisner described how he came to work on The Crazies.
Michael Aguilar and Dean Goergaris - two of the producers - had a deal at Paramount. They had optioned the rights to The Crazies directly from Romero, and had a draft written by Scott Kosar. I was approached at that point. The thing that really drew me was the fact that they optioned the story directly from Romero, which meant he was going to be an executive producer,...
