Several albums will turn 50 years old this fall, from Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road to the Who’s Quadrophenia. That also includes the Grateful Dead’s Wake of the Flood, which will be expanded for its anniversary on Sept. 29.
Released in October 1973, Wake of the Flood marked an album of change for the Dead. It was their first record without Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, who died that spring, and drummer Mickey Hart, who temporarily parted ways with the band. It was also the debut of their new label, Grateful Dead Records.

"I get to play it, and you get to listen to it – this instrument, this thing, this Force!" As we wait—probably another year—for Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese (79 yesterday!) has not let a long stay in the edit bay get him down. Per Variety, he’ll reunite with Jonah Hill for an as-yet-untitled Jerry Garcia biopic “expected to chronicle the band’s rise amid the ’60s psychedelic counterculture movement.” Scripted by the reliable Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the project is moving forward with Apple and at the surviving members’ blessing: Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and Mickey Hart are executive producing.

Martin Scorsese is making a musical biopic about the Grateful Dead, with Jonah Hill set to star as the iconic rock band’s frontman Jerry Garcia.
The project reunites Scorsese and Hill, who worked together on “The Wolf of Wall Street.” In addition to directing, Scorsese will serve as a producer alongside Hill.
The still-untitled film is expected to chronicle the band’s formation in the Bay Area as the ’60s psychedelic counterculture movement started to take off. Known for popularizing the jam-band musical style, the Grateful Dead — whose devoted fans call themselves Deadheads — has remained one of the most influential music groups. Along with Garcia, founding members include Bob Weir, Ron McKernan, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann. Woodstock ’99 was a shameful disaster. Promoters brought 200,000 young rock fans to a former Air Force base in Rome, New York, but failed to provide them with nearly enough toilets or free water. It was held on a scorching hot weekend in late July with temperatures above 100 degrees, and there was little shade. Bottled water was $4. Some sort of violent eruption was practically inevitable. With a new HBO documentary revisiting the infamous event, a new generation is learning about one of the most calamitous festivals of all time.

When John Mayer took the moderator’s mantle on a Clubhouse talk on Tuesday night (April 27), one got the sense that the seven-time Grammy-winning musician was trying out material. Not shtick, per se, as the charismatic Mayer has no problem holding down a conversation on all manner of topics without prior preparation, but rather, Mayer took charge of a room of 3,000 listeners with the ease of a late-night host.
It’s no wonder, then, to learn that Mayer is nearing a deal with Paramount Plus to host a talk and performance series based on the format of the BBC’s long-running “Later with Jools Holland.”
Sources tell Variety that “Later With John Mayer” has been pitched to prospective broadcast partners as a series featuring performance segments as well as interviews with musicians, artists and other cultural figures in a setting designed to look like an after-hours club for musicians.

Dating back at least to 1977, when Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, and Linda Ronstadt performed during Jimmy Carter’s first day on the job — and all the way up to Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez at Joe Biden’s swearing-in ceremony — it hasn’t been unusual for rock and pop stars to play presidential inaugurations. Still, there was nothing quite like the sight, 12 years ago tonight, of the Grateful Dead jamming for Barack Obama.

“Is all or a portion of your spouse's income deposited in a checking account, joint checking account, your spouse's separate checking savings account, your separate checking and savings account…?” The administrator's tedious voice continues in this fashion, stern and unforgiving. More questions concerning money, welfare checks, and the daily American grind, asked by faceless system operators on the other end of a telephone line build layers of sound on top of metallic instruments, bells, and the buzzing of Los Angeles and the advertisements of an American dream. The dissonance of this swirling sound design, the intro of Haile Gerima’s Bush Mama (1979), takes one specifically to a place, a class, and a people: The Black working class experience, the sounds of a restless city. The opening of this mixtape encapsulates the vitality and experimentation of sound design and music in the films of the L.A. Rebellion, a film movement...

Twenty five years ago this week, the world of the Grateful Dead was forever changed when Jerry Garcia died of a heart attack at 53. From band employees to Deadheads, many were shaken, but few more so than Garcia’s fellow bandmates. Drummer Mickey Hart, who joined the Dead in 1967 and is currently part of Dead & Company, spoke with Rolling Stone about his memories of that day and what followed.

Grateful Dead isn’t just a band. It is a social phenomenon. But as a band, it had one major superpower, the greatest Pa system in the world. It is only fitting Z2 Comics would want to include them in their roster of music-affiliated graphic novels. Their upcoming Grateful Dead Origins chronicles the history of jamband culture.
“Jerry Garcia was an avid comic book enthusiast so it is incredibly fitting to have the Grateful Dead’s origin story told in graphic novel form,” Rhino Entertainment President Mark Pinkus, said in a statement. “Z2’s passion for the band’s music and mythology make them the perfect partner to bring the story to life. It has been inspiring to watch the novel’s artwork evolve over the last year and I’m excited that Dead Heads now get to have a preview.”

Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir planned out only two things before each of the thousands of concerts they played together in the Grateful Dead: The song they would begin with and the song they would end with. Everything else was decided in the moment. “While Jerry was singing, I had plenty of time to think about the next tune that I was going to do,” says Weir. “And while I was singing, he had plenty of time to think about what tune he was next going to do. We developed a feel for that.

Owsley Stanley was known as the foremost underground LSD chemist of the 1960s. But he was also an exacting pioneer of live concert sound, a man who helped invent both monitor systems and high-fidelity amplification. When he died in 2011 at the age of 76, Stanley left behind a breathtaking array of some 1,300 reels amassed between 1966 and 1982. Buried inside are lost concerts by legends like Johnny Cash, Fleetwood Mac, Tim Buckley, and dozens of others, alongside the San Francisco psychedelic bands Stanley is most often associated with, such as the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane.

The Grateful Dead’s craziest video — a 1987 clip for In the Dark track “Hell in a Bucket” — begins in a smoky bar. Bikers greet each other, embracing and clinging to their cold beers while flaunting their bicep tattoos. A woman shoves a dude playing an F-14 Tomcat pinball machine in the corner, knocking him to the ground.
Is that a flannelled Jerry Garcia? What’s he doing here? He isolates himself from the rowdy drinkers, strumming his beloved Tiger in his shades until the camera shifts and introduces us to a dazzling Bob Weir.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that as the reports surfaced that President Donald Trump had asked the president of Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden and his son Hunter, it was a clarifying moment that convinced her to launch an impeachment inquiry.
“I can’t tell if he knows right from wrong. He just done wrong,” Pelosi said of Trump’s July 17 call, which is now at the center of the Democratic-led investigation.
Pelosi announced the impeachment inquiry on Sept. 24, but speaking at the New Yorker Festival, moderator Jane Mayer asked her what led her to favor launching the impeachment process after earlier opposing it.
“There was plenty the president had done, evidenced in the Mueller report and just other things, that were impeachable offenses,” Pelosi said.
Noting that “timing is everything,” and that they would proceed “when we get more facts, when the truth has more clarity, we will be ready.

In 1961, a young Jerry Garcia met another struggling artist: writer and musician Robert Hunter. For more than 30 years until Garcia’s death in 1995, the two were friends and songwriting partners; with Garcia supplying the music and Hunter the lyrics, out came most of the Grateful Dead’s most enduring songs: “Dark Star,” “Uncle John’s Band,” “Truckin’,” “Touch of Grey,” “Ripple,” “China Cat Sunflower” and so many more. Hunter also wrote with bandmates Bob Weir (“Sugar Magnolia,” “Playing in the Band”) and Phil Lesh (“Box of Rain”). Hunter died of...
