Cory Michael Smith’s performance as Chevy Chase is one of the many highlights of the new film Saturday Night.
And while some viewers might be discovering the 37-year-old’s talents for the first time, Cory has been demonstrating his impressive abilities for over a decade.
After bursting onto the scene in the acclaimed 2014 HBO miniseries Olive Kitteridge, Cory quickly became a favorite of award-winning filmmaker Todd Haynes.

Steve Zaillian garnered an Emmy Award on Sunday for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Netflix’s Ripley.
In his speech, Zaillian said he was enamored by the beautiful landscapes that Italy provided, alongside being grateful for his cast and crew. “Making Ripley in Italy was its own reward. It was like a dream. I didn’t need anything after that,” the director said. “The work is its own reward and I still really appreciate this honor though, and I share it with literally hundreds of people who worked on Ripley, the actors, Andrew [Scott], Dakota [Fanning], Elliot [Sumner], Johnny [Flynn], Maurizio [Lombardi], and all the other wonderful Italian actors, the producers, the incredible department heads and crew—all of ’em artists in their own right. I thank them. The Academy, Netflix and my family.”

On Sunday we are celebrating the winners of the 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, the second time this year after January’s strike-delayed 75th Emmys, but we know the results will be, at least in part, quite different (well maybe not for The Bear). So here is my stab at predicting just who those winners will be.
Outstanding Drama Series
With only The Crown returning from the lineup here just eight months ago, what might have been a fresh, wide open race now seems utterly predictable in terms of a runaway winner. After already setting a record for a single season series with 14 wins at last weekend’s Creative Arts ceremonies, FX’s Shōgun with 25 nominations overall to lead this year’s list of nominees will certainly prevail here, proof that FX’s last minute move from Limited Series to Drama Series will pay off big time.

“Baby Reindeer” has been on an upward trajectory since its quiet premiere in April, and that is reflected in this 2024 Emmy lineup for Best Limited/Movie Writing. Not only is Richard Gadd expected to win here, but he’s also nominated for producing and starring in the Netflix limited series. It’s one of two full showings nominated in this category and is the only autobiographical series represented. The other nominees stem from “Ripley,” “Black Mirror,” “Fargo,” “Fellow Travelers” and “True Detective: Night Country.” With Gadd’s odds looking steady for both Best Limited Series and Best Limited/Movie Actor, will he also pull off a victory in the writing category?
Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Limited/Movie Writing Emmy 2024 racetrack odds:
1. “Baby Reindeer” (Richard Gadd) — 10/3 odds
2. “Ripley” (Steven Zaillian) — 9/2 odds
3. “Fargo” (“The Tragedy of the Commons” by Noah Hawley) — 5/1 odds

Seven years after coming up short on their respective first and second Best TV Movie/Limited Series Directing Emmy bids against Jean-Marc Vallée (“Big Little Lies”), Steven Zaillian and Noah Hawley are involved in a rematch as helmers of the non-continuing programs “Ripley” and “Fargo.” Despite the quality of their new work and their strong Emmys resumes, they are widely expected to once again be bested by a complete first-timer: Weronika Tofilska (“Baby Reindeer”).
Tofilska is joined in this directing lineup’s category newcomer majority by Issa López (“True Detective”), Millicent Shelton (“Lessons in Chemistry”), and Gus Van Sant (“Feud”). Counting Zaillian and Hawley, Shelton is the only one in the bunch who has ever earned TV academy recognition for directing a non-limited series, as her very first bid came for “30 Rock” in 2009.

At this point in his career, “Black Mirror” creator Charlie Brooker has a perfect Emmys record, having succeeded on all three producing and two writing nominations he has received for the Netflix series. Soon, however, he could be blocked from going six-for-six by general first-timer Richard Gadd, who is predicted to trounce him in the 2024 race for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Writing.
Along with Ron Nyswaner (“Fellow Travelers”) and Issa López (“True Detective”), Gadd is one of three category newcomers involved in this writing contest. Aside from sole past winner Brooker, the remaining veterans are Noah Hawley (“Fargo”) and Steven Zaillian (“Ripley”), both of whom the “Black Mirror” writer defeated in 2017.
In order to determine whether Gadd truly has this race sewn up, let’s take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure to make your predictions in this and 24 other Primetime Emmy categories by September 15.

I once thought the European mind couldn’t comprehend Dinner for Schmucks. I now know how wrong I was.
14 ‘Dinner for Schmucks’ (2010)
The 1998 French film Le Dîner de Cons (“dinner of fools”) won a ton of awards and sparked three different Indian adaptations: 2007’s Hindi-language Bheja Fry, 2008’s Kannada-language Mr. Garagasa and 2010’s Malayalam-language April Fool. The original film is based on a 1999 French play of the same name. When it was still a stage production, the title was often translated in English as The Prat’s Dinner or The Cunt’s Dinner.
13 ‘The Last House on the Left’ (2009)
The 2009 Wes Craven film is a remake of a 1972 Wes Craven film, which in turn was based on the 1960 Swedish film Jungfrukällan (“the virgin spring”). That film was actually based on a 13th-century Scandinavian ballad, “Töres döttrar i Wänge,” a real mindfreak about the tragic origin of a local Swedish church.

Heading into the 2024 Primetime Emmys, Netflix is poised to achieve its third Best Limited Series victory in four years. Most prognosticators are convinced that “Baby Reindeer” will easily emulate “The Queen’s Gambit” and “Beef,” but, even if it falters, its streaming platform has some insurance here since its “Ripley” also has a shot at the gold.
This year’s five Best Limited Series contenders boast between 10 and 19 nominations apiece, making for a collective total of 68. In addition to Apple TV+’s “Lessons in Chemistry,” the two Netflix programs’ challengers include the respective fourth and fifth iterations of the HBO and FX anthology series “True Detective” and “Fargo.”
In order to determine whether this is truly Netflix’s race to lose, let’s take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure to make your predictions in this and 24 other Primetime Emmy categories by September 15.

What “Shōgun” accomplished Sunday at the Creative Arts Awards was unprecedented, grabbing 14 prizes (including 13 craft honors) and sweeping every category except the main title theme and original score by Atticus Ross, Leopold Ross, and Nick Chuba.
FX’s Japanese historical drama eclipsed the 13 wins by “Game of Thrones” and is all but certain to take Best Drama Series and more while setting a new Emmy record at the Primetime ceremony September 15.
“Shōgun” took casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period/fantasy production design, period/fantasy hairstyling, main title design, non-prosthetic period/fantasy/sci-fi makeup, prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt performance.
In addition, “Shōgun” cast member Nestor Carbonell snagged guest actor honors while, separately, “Shōgun”: The Making of “Shōgun” took short-form nonfiction or reality series.

Jude Law’s appearance as rich, beautiful playboy Dickie in the 1999 film The Talented Mr Ripley secured his international film stardom, but now the British actor has shared why he almost turned down the role.
Law told The Times of London that he was panicking about being typecast at that stage in his career. He said:
“It was delusion and madness. There was a panic in my head that I was going to be typecast as this good-looking guy. That’s where my 23-year-old brain was. What I missed, idiotically, were the complexities of that role, but honestly? I just wanted to be taken seriously.”

As far as TV and movie adaptations go, Steven Zaillian’s limited series “Ripley” is fairly faithful to Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley novels. In particular, the writer/director was keen to capture the sinister and dark tone of Highsmith’s portrayal of Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott), a conman who proves capable of two murders, and lies with the skill of a sociopath. To further explore this aspect of the character, Zaillian did introduce one particularly bold stroke of his own: The 16th-century Italian painter Caravaggio.
“The Caravaggio references are not in the book,” said Zaillian, while on IndieWire’s Toolkit podcast. “That’s based on when I first went to Italy [in the early ‘80s]. That’s when I discovered Caravaggio and I was fascinated with his paintings. And then did the same thing [as Tom in “Ripley”], I started reading about his life.”

Almost 35 years ago, production designer David Gropman worked on a Merchant Ivory World War II-era drama called “Mr. & Mrs. Bridge,” in which the opening sequence was in black and white. He still remembers watching dailies to that sequence and hearing director James Ivory exclaim, “What have I been waiting for all these years? It works so much better in black and white!”
“He was right,” Gropman said, laughing. “And I have longed to do a black-and-white film since then.” He finally got his wish with “Ripley,” Steven Zaillian’s Netflix limited series based on the Patricia Highsmith novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley” — although Gropman estimates that the eight-episode, seven-hour series was really “about five films” in scale and complexity.

It is with great sadness that we report legendary French actor Alain Delon has died at the age of 88. Widely hailed as the most beautiful movie star of all time thanks to his ocean blue eyes and statuesque, sculpted cheekbones, Delon — star of Le Samourai, Plein Soleil, Rocco And His Brothers and much, much more — brought an insouciant cool to cinema on- and off-screen, and an ineffable capacity to convey the depths of a brooding soul in the level of those self-same eyes. Delon passed away at his home in Douchy, surrounded by his three children and family, on 18 August.
Born on 8 November 1935 to cinema projectionist (and later La Régina cinema director) father François Fabien Delon and pharmacist and cinema usher mother Édith Marie Suzanne Arnold, you could say that the movies ran in Alain Fabien Maurice Marcel Delon's blood. Cinema isn’t a beauty contest, but if it were, Alain Delon surely would have won the title of the 1960s’ most handsome actor.
That’s a subjective call, of course, and as such, Delon is the kind of figure about whom writers tend to fall back on the word “arguably” — as in, “arguably the most handsome” — which is kind of a cop-out, as it leaves the argument to somebody else. When it comes to Delon, plenty have made the case. I loved Anthony Lane’s longform analysis of Delon’s allure in The New Yorker earlier this year. And none other than Jane Fonda, who co-starred with Delon in 1964’s “Joy House,” described him as “the most beautiful human being.”

Of course he was gorgeous — it was always the first thing you noticed about Alain Delon whenever he appeared onscreen, that otherworldly handsomeness that took your breath away no matter where you fell on the Kinsey scale. The French movie star knew that he was one of the most beautiful people to ever grace the movies, from any country and in any era, with those near-geometric cheekbones and those icy blue eyes; Delon knew his looks opened professional doors for him and opened the arms of women whose company he was happy to keep.

In Ripley, Netflix’s dazzling eight-part adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s landmark 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, the approach to the material is more emotionally cold and deliberately paced than in the 1999 movie adaptation. Anchored by a bravura performance by Andrew Scott, the series — nominated for 13 Emmys — was written and directed by veteran screenwriter Steven Zaillian (Oscar winner for Schindler’s List). Zaillian joins THR for a conversation about this ambitious project’s journey to the small screen.

Alain Delon, one of the biggest international movie stars of all time, has passed away at 88. The actor, who’d been in poor health in recent years, is widely considered one of the most iconic French stars ever. First rising to fame as part of a new crop of actors during the French New Wave, Delon was the first person to play Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley in Purple Noon, while also starring in classics such as The Leopard, Rocco and His Sisters and many more.

“It’s the light! Always the light!” exclaims a priest to the murderous Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) as they bask in the glory of a Caravaggio painting in Netflix’s new adaption of the Patricia Highsmith novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. There are a multitude of exquisite facets to cinematographer Robert Elswit’s work on the series, including the formal compositions that embrace the Italian setting’s architecture. But, more than anything else, it’s the light as Elswit harkens back to classic noirs, 1960s Italian cinema and the canvasses of the great masters of chiaroscuro. Casting director Avy Kaufman admits even she was skeptical when Steven Zaillian asked her to come on board to cast “Ripley,” the Netflix limited series based on Patricia Highsmith’s classic novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” The story had already been adapted to screen, most notably in Anthony Minghella’s Oscar-nominated 1999 film.
“At first, I was wondering why Steve was doing this,” Kaufman says bluntly. “I’ve been lucky enough to work with him on many other projects, so I know how talented he is, but to reboot is really risky.” But the final product, which boasts 13 Emmy nominations, including a nod for casting, quelled any doubts. “It’s like a piece of art,” Kaufman raves. “I was really impressed. It tells so many different stories and gets inside the characters. I just think it’s a masterpiece.”

Emmy-nominated “Ripley” casting director Avy Kaufman was previously familiar with the Tom Ripley works by Patricia Highsmith and their adaptations. But “how clever of [writer-director Steven Zaillian] to extend it to the magical place he did … The way Steve presented it, the way he wrote it, the way he set it up, the way he outlined everything gave me and probably all the other creatives a different approach, a different look at it.” So she knew this “wasn’t going to be a remake of a remake of a remake.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Kaufman above.

Steven Zaillian won an Oscar for writing one of the most beloved films in history, “Schindler’s List,” but he hasn’t made his way up to the podium yet at the Emmys. This year he’s nominated for writing, directing and producing Netflix’s limited series “Ripley,” based on Patricia Highsmith‘s “The Talented Mr. Ripley” novel about the title con artist. That brings Zaillian’s career total to seven, following three noms for “The Night Of” and one for “My Dinner with Herve.” What are his chances of taking home one, two or even three trophies for his latest TV effort?
“Ripley” earned 13 Emmy nominations overall including Best Limited Series, Best Movie/Limited Actor (Andrew Scott) and Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress (Dakota Fanning), plus Zaillian’s bids for writing and directing and Creative Arts noms for production design, casting, cinematography and more. While it’s hard to believe that Dakota Fanning hasn’t previously been recognized by the TV Academy, having now been acting for 25 years, she did in fact earn her first Emmy nomination this morning, speaking with Deadline about her upcoming Paramount horror film Vicious, her upcoming Netflix murder mystery series The Perfect Couple, and her creative ambitions going forward.
Written and directed by Bryan Bertino, Vicious watches as a woman spends the night fighting for her existence as she slips down a rabbit hole contained inside a gift from a late-night visitor. Of her time working on the film, dated for release on August 8, 2025, Fanning said, “I absolutely loved that experience, and that was very different from anything I’ve done before. Tom Ripley is a master of reinvention, but his considerable skills can only take him so far. At the end of Ripley, the walls are closing in onAndrew Scott’s dapper con artist, and Italian police are desperately tracking the man they suspect of murdering two people — Freddie Miles (Eliot Sumner) and Ripley himself. This gives Ripley, who’s been posing as Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn), the perfect escape hatch. Because it’s Dickie the police suspect of murder — and Dickie whose identity (and bank account) Ripley has been using — Ripley can return to a safe harbor: his own name and passport.
“People have a lot of preconceptions about Tom Ripley,” Emmy nominee Scott told Netflix of the infamous antihero created by Patricia Highsmith in her 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. “So it’s my job, I suppose in some ways, to ignore all that and try to create our...

Ripley is who assumes the identity of a wealthy American expat. But, as star Andrew Scott told Netflix, it’s also “a story about art and beauty and sensuality… helped by the great beauty of Italy.”
Based on the 1955 Patricia Highsmith novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, the 13-time Emmy-nominated limited series follows charming con artist Tom Ripley (Scott) on a trip to Italy in the 1960s bankrolled by a shipping magnate to retrieve his wayward son, Richard “Dickie” Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn). Tom ingratiates himself into Dickie’s life — much to the chagrin of Dickie’s suspicious girlfriend, Marge Sherwood (Dakota Fanning) — and soon is on the run from police while posing as Dickie in Rome.
Creator Steven Zaillian’s team of talented artists — production designer David Gropman, director of photography Robert Elswit, and costume designers Maurizio Millenotti and Giovanni Casalnuovo — meticulously re-created a 1960s aesthetic. Below, find out how...

Kommenden Mittwoch werden die Emmy-Nominierungen bekannt gegeben. Spot blickt auf die aussichtsreichsten Kandidaten und nennt weitere Anwärter auf den so begehrten TV- und Streaming-Preis.
Favoriten (v.l.): „The Bear“, „Rentierbaby“ und „Shōgun“
Am 17. Juli werden die 76. Primetime-Emmy-Nominierungen bekannt gegeben. Die Preisverleihung findet am 15. September statt.

Baby Reindeer (Netflix)
What makes this show addictive is also what makes it disturbing, devastating and occasionally funny: its brutal honesty. Richard Gadd’s account of stalking and abuse spares no one, least of all his semi-autobiographical stand-in. But it also finds empathy for imperfect victims and troubled perpetrators alike — the latter played by Jessica Gunning with ferocious commitment. — Angie Han
Extraordinary (Hulu)
In a TV landscape teeming with superpowered folks, this series stands out — and not just because its protagonist, Jen (Máiréad Tyers), is the rare adult in her universe without a special ability. Really a quarterlife coming-of-age comedy in genre packaging, the second season digs even deeper into its characters’ psyches to explore themes as relatable as sexuality and loss. — A.H.
Fantasmas (HBO)
A show that could only have come from Julio Torres, the surreal mind behind Los Espookys, Fantasmas follows a writer trying to avoid being evicted.

During Steven Zaillian’s Ripley, the viewer gleans a lot from things that aren’t said, whether that’s through telltale props, intricate sets or fabulous 1960s fashion. But it’s the show’s sound mixing that really becomes a key player in the Netflix series, adding tension and mystery to scenes with little dialogue or score.
“Steve clearly planned the show with sound in mind and really left room for the environments and ambiences to breathe and support a tone,” says sound designer and rerecording mixer Larry Zipf. “We had many long stretches with little dialogue or little music, and wherever there was opportunity for sound to give the impression of life outside the frame, whether it’s diegetic or in Tom’s mind, Steve was always looking for that.”

Halfway through their Actors on Actors conversation, Brie Larson and Andrew Scott discover something they have in common: Neither of them is a trained actor. Larson brings up the subject almost hesitantly, to explain why she has difficulty talking about her craft. “I didn’t go to school for it,” she says. “No! I didn’t either!” Scott replies. Excitedly, Larson says: “I knew I liked you!” Despite any self-professed deficiencies about discussing acting, Larson and Scott insightfully talk about how they each got their start at a young age, and then dive into their current television projects: his remake of “Ripley” on Netflix and her Apple TV+ limited series “Lessons in Chemistry,” which Larson also developed as an executive producer. Both shows originate from books — Patricia Highsmith’s classic thriller and Bonnie Garmus’ 2022 bestseller, respectively — and though their characters are very different (Tom Ripley is a grifter turned murderer...

The fifth episode of Netflix’s’ “Ripley” takes a darker turn when Tom Ripley’s (Andrew Scott) perfect life is interrupted.
Having found the perfect apartment in Rome – Dickie Greenleaf’s – he receives an unexpected visitor, Freddie Miles (Eliot Summer). Freddie suspects all is not what it seems, and soon Tom ends up murdering him. Rather than dispose of the body, Tom waits until it’s dark.
Based on Patricia Highsmith’s “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” the limited series follows con artist Tom Ripley who befriends a wealthy shipping heir, Dickie Greenleaf, played by Johnny Flynn.
Lighting was important. It needed to reflect who Tom was and the world he lived in which was very contrasted. The black-and-white aesthetic would give the audience a sense of anxiety, tension and mystery.
Cinematographer Robert Elswit sat down for Variety’s Artisans Inside the Frame and discussed getting inside Ripley’s mind.

The Talented Mr. Ripley is one of my favourite movies. The adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s first Ripley novel is a twisty tale of deception and murder, which features a fantastic ensemble cast, including Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Jude Law. Every element really came together perfectly, but Jude Law almost didn’t take part as he initially turned down the project.
While speaking with Vanity Fair, Jude Law revealed his fears of being typecast and the terrible advice he received from his agent at the time, which caused him to turn down The Talented Mr. Ripley.

In building the world of Netflix’s “Ripley,” production designer David Gropman needed to incorporate grand Italian train stations and works of art from the early 1960s.
The series, shot in black and white, is based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” about a con artist named Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott), who befriends a wealthy shipping heir, Dickie Greenleaf, played by Johnny Flynn.
Gropman began his plunge into designing the look of the show by studying photography books with images of the time and place. “Neo Realismo: The New Image in Italy 1932-1960” was his style bible. He further utilized work by legendary photographers Pietro Donzelli, Bert Hardy, David Seymour, Herbert List and Mario Cattaneo to help visualize what this 1960s world would look like.
In particular, Gropman needed to find the right kind of train station in Italy, since the characters travel a lot around Italy.

The production design work for David Gropman on the Netflix limited series “Ripley” involved “seven sets on stage, large and small, and about 200 locations.” The rigorous location scouting process started in October 2019, paused for several months when Covid struck, and then when they resumed in January 2021 “we had like six months of scouting and pre-production then. We had a lot to prepare. We had a lot to find and a lot to prepare.” Watch our exclusive video interview with “Gropman” above.

Dakota Fanning is ready to argue. You name the time, the place, and she’s ready to go.
“I can argue. I can outargue the best of ’em,” said Fanning. “My whole family and everyone that knows me [knows] I missed my calling: I could have been a good lawyer.”
Fanning’s portrayal of Marge Sherwood in Netflix’s “Ripley” suggests that the aspiring American writer who’s relocated to the Italian seaside may have missed her calling, too. Hiding behind that chirp of a name is a...

It’s two weeks after Elizabeth Debicki attended the Met Gala. She’s now in Los Angeles for Emmy campaigning for her work as Princess Diana on “The Crown.”
I meet her Netflix’s FYC pop-up in Hollywood for quick chat before she takes part in a panel discussion with “The Crown” creator Peter Morgan. We grab a couple of seats in the “Ripley” room. “I’m bummed I couldn’t be in it,” Debicki says of the streamer’s adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel, “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” “Not that anyone asked.”
But then she suddenly remembers the Met Gala. “I sat in between Jude Law and Matt Damon,” Debicki says. “At that point, one margarita in, I thought, “Oh, my God. I’m in a Ripley sandwich.”
She did not, however, share her thought with the original “Ripley” actors.
