The words offbeat, personal and edgy used to be a draw for movie fare — we’d check out a new relationship picture based only on an actor or two that we liked. Bobby Roth’s semi-autobiographical buddy story has a good stab at the early ’80s art + singles scene in Los Angeles, with a dash of macho clichés — pals Peter Coyote and Nick Mancuso fight in public and somehow suffer while bedding fantastic women. But the overall vibe is one of honest sensitivity, aided by fine performances from Carole Laure, Kathryn Harrold and Carol Wayne. Plus music by Tangerine Dream.

Wildly uneven but sporadically affecting, Bobby Roth’s “Pearl” is . A few abrupt narrative transitions indicate that some scenes, for whatever reason, must have been discarded during the editing process. But what remains on screen is enough to hold attention and generate rooting interest, especially if you’re amused by inside-baseball allusions to the film and TV industry.
There is an unmistakable air of autobiography to “Pearl,” along with the distinct flavor of a labor of love. Writer-director Roth first attracted notice with two well-received indie films, “The Boss’ Son” (1978) and “Heartbreakers” (a 1984 Sundance Festival prize-winner) before concentrating almost exclusively (and prolifically) on TV movies and series television. Jack Wolf, Lapaglia’s character, is a filmmaker who evidently has made some very bad, maybe unforgivable career moves, but still sells the occasional TV script.

In the early Nineties, Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa moved to Los Angeles and found themselves living next door to movie and TV director Bobby Roth, who has worked on everything from Miami Vice and Beverly Hills 90210 to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. They formed a tight friendship that resulted in Roth occasionally sprinkling Scialfa and Springsteen songs into his movies, including his 2003 John Ritter–Janeane Garofalo black comedy Manhood, and that bond only deepened when he married Springsteen’s sister, actress and photographer Pamela Springsteen. “He’s part of the family,...

I’m a big fan of Robert Patrick, who is best know for his roles in Terminator 2 and The X-Files, so it’s great to see him join Steven Soderbergh’s new film project The Laundromat.
Patrick joins an already impressive cast that includes Gary Oldman, Meryl Streep, Antonio Banderas, David Schwimmer and Will Forte.
The story centers around one of the largest money laundering schemes ever. “The Panama Papers refers to the documents that linked money laundering to politicians and powerful higher-ups such as U.S. President Donald Trump. The documents came to light due to a whistleblower with knowledge of the Mossack Fonseca law firm.”
Schwimmer will take on the role of Matthew Quirk, an attorney who speaks on behalf of one of the insurance companies after 20 elderly passengers die on a boating excursion. “The boating company learned its insurance isn’t the large company it thought it was,...

The female-driven plots that Turkish TV is known for as well as its customary history, family and crime tropes — spiced with a snappier pace and new supernatural storylines — are the main elements of the fresh crop of Turkish dramas ready to conquer global audiences, and continue the pop culture phenomenon that has made Turkey the world’s second-largest TV content exporter after the U.S.
The following is a compendium of standout Turkish TV series in various stages, some of which will be shopped at Miptv.
“Broken Wings”
Making a splash after its November launch at MipCancun, this fast-paced social drama about a widowed mother of four struggling with extreme poverty has already sold to the U.S. Hispanic market among other territories. Produced by Koliba Film, it’s been a solid performer on Turkey’s Atv, where it started airing last June.

Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 20: “Scars”
Written by Rafe Judkins and Lauren LeFranc
Directed by Bobby Roth
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC
In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America talks about how Shield is about saving people and that’s “how Shield should work.” While the Avengers are waxing nostalgic about their days at Nick Fury’s Shield, remembering the super-cool heli-carrier while forgetting Fury’s secret alien weaponry, present-day Shield is not really all that pretty and shiny. If anything, they are dealing with the exact same problems that Tony Stark is struggling with in Age of Ultron, and Nick Fury struggled with before him in Winter Soldier. Plot-wise, “Scars” only ties in loosely with Age of Ultron, but thematically, both should really be seen to fully appreciate each one.
In “Scars”, the story picks up after Shield shows up with the heli-carrier in Sokovia and saves the day.

Plot:
As Hydra continues to brainwash Shield agents to comply with their cause, Simmons is found to be working undercover within their organisation.
Verdict:
And so we finally get to see what Simmons has been up to for the past few episodes, which we find is working for Hydra. Her getting up and heading for work montage (which had the tune ‘God Help the Girl’ playing alongside it) was well done, with the ending focusing on the Hydra logo in the laboratory. This was meant to make us think that she had switched sides, but I didn’t believe the good hearted Simmon’s would be like that. And the show did not waste any time revealing that truth to us, as just one quarter way through the episode we get a nice dinner/debrief between her and Coulson (with the Shield...

Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 3, “Making Friends and Influencing People”
