      According to his book, Once More With Feeling, Charlie gave a talk at the Fourth International Steinbeck Conference at the University of San Jose, California. The paper was entitled "John Steinbeck and the Homosexual Reader." The talk was met with disapproval from the audience and the essay was not included in the published proceedings, the book "Beyond boundaries: rereading John Steinbeck" (University of Alabama, 2002).
