The world’s first streaming provider dedicated to Australian movies launched this week with commendable but questionable ambition
I’ve got a guy in Melbourne who gets me the good stuff. Or perhaps “good” isn’t the best word; maybe “rare” is better. He’s the person I go to with titles of Australian films that never got a release on DVD or video and can’t be purchased online. I don’t know how he finds them and I don’t ask any questions.
This modern-day Santa figure introduced me to the lofty highs of the 1992 Hey Hey It’s Saturday! telemovie Silence of the Hams, starring Daryl Somers as a hardboiled detective and Red Symons as a Chinese villain (you read that right) complete with Fu Manchu moustache. If pressed, my movie dealer talks modestly about his collection – “I don’t have everything,” he’ll say – but it...

The Nine Network is channelling tens of millions of dollars freed up from the end of its output deal with Warner Bros. into a record investment in local content.
Spending on local production will continue to rise over the next three years to the point where the network invests $100 million more per year than currently, executives said at the upfronts presentation today.
While Nine retains the first-run rights to The Big Bang Theory, director of programming and production Andrew Backwell said the broadcaster decided to relinquish the re-runs (subsequently acquired by Seven) because it preferred to spend the money on local content.
The 2016 line-up includes the Matchbox Pictures drama Hide & Seek, Cjz.s previously announced two-part Alan Bond miniseries House of Bond and a new factual series, Prison: First & Last 24 Hours.

The host of Hey Hey It's Saturday has denied that the show is facing the axe. Daryl Somers, who returned as the frontman of the variety show when it was revived last year after a decade off the air, said that viewers thought the series was being cancelled when it stopped being televised on weekdays earlier this year. He told The Daily Telegraph that "people [keep] coming up to [him] and saying, 'I thought the show had finished,'" when it has in fact just moved back to its original timeslot on a Saturday night. He continued: "[The show is] (more)...

Kylie appeared on Wednesday night’s (July 21) Hey Hey It’s Saturday TV show, which she first appeared on back in the 1980s. Talking to host Daryl Somers about her new nephew, sister Dannii’s baby, Ethan, she said: “I have cuddled him and gazed at him adoringly, he’s a little marvel.” She also admitted she was, “Just a little bit clucky.”
To cheers, she also said every member of the show’s audience would get a bottle of her new perfume. She also said her only dream was to be happy and “not to dream impossible dreams.” She was also shown clips from her appearances in the show in the past, during which she laughed and shook her head. When it returns later in the year, Hey Hey's host hopes it has a 'new' night.

Daryl Somers says Hey Hey isn't resting on its laurels, with new ideas to stay fresh.
Hey Hey It's Saturday is determined not to be seen to be living in the past.

"Mums and Dads said, 'We want to watch this show because it means a lot to us, when we were young.' And the kids have probably thought... More >>...
