Ryan Gosling sometimes regrets coining the phrase “Kenergy.” Speaking on Saturday at Variety‘s Hitmakers event, however, he embraced the idea of “Kenergy” — a term he said he made up while on a press junket for the hit film “Barbie” — to describe musician, songwriter and producer Mark Ronson.
Gosling was at Hitmakers, presented by Sony Audio, to award Ronson, the executive producer behind the “Barbie” soundtrack and a co-producer and co-writer on some of its standout tracks, this year’s honors for Soundtrack of the Year. In doing so, Gosling championed Ronson for being the prime example of “Kenergy” in the real world.
“What is ‘Kenergy,’ other than a word I made up on a press junket so I didn’t have to really answer any questions, that’s haunted me ever since?” Gosling said while chuckling on stage. “Well, it’s a noun, that I’ve come to understand...

Duran Duran have shared another preview of their upcoming Halloween-themed album Danse Macabre. It’s a cover of Talking Heads’ de facto spooky anthem “Psycho Killer,” with an assist from Victoria De Angelis of Måneskin.
In a press release, De Angelis said that Talking Heads’ Tina Weymouth was one of her biggest influences when she began playing bass. Meanwhile, Duran Duran bassist John Taylor lauded De Angelis as “probably the most important electric bassist out there right now.” He recalled: He continued: “I met a couple of the guys from Måneskin at a party and they said, ‘you’ve got to meet our bass player.’ She’s such a dynamo! I was like ‘what inspired you?’ and Vic said, ‘Tina Weymouth.’ So when Psycho Killer made the cut for the album, I thought, ‘I’m gonna ask her if she’d like to have a bass-off!’”

Duran Duran throw a virtual monsters’ ball in their video for “Danse Macabre,” the title track of their upcoming album, which comes out just before Halloween on Oct. 27. The music features the return of the band’s former guitarist, Warren Cuccurullo, since he left the group in 2001.
The animated clip, for which creative director Linc Gasking, used AI technology, shows Dracula, Pennywise, Nosferatu, and other baddies dancing and monster-mashing as the members of Duran Duran, who, of course, look undead here, perform the spooky song. “Get dirty up on a danse macabre,...

The Japan rugby union team on Sunday thrashed tournament newcomers Chile 42-12 on the first weekend of the freshly kicked-off Rugby World Cup. But in 2015, Japan were the underdogs and yet pulled off a surprise result against rugby titans South Africa.
In the first ever match between the two nations Japan won 34-32, due to an 80th minute try.
“The Brighton Miracle,” a docu-drama capturing and re-constructing that shock match, has been picked up by Blue Sky Media. The film was produced by Syn Entertainment and the rights outside of Japan were brokered by producer’s rep Summer & Co.
The film was written and directed by Max Mannix. Mannix, himself a former professional rugby player, lived more than a decade in Japan and wrote the Kurosawa Kiyoshi-directed “Tokyo Sonata,” which debuted in Cannes Un Certain Regard in 2008.

Founding Duran Duran member and guitarist Andy Taylor claims a new drug treatment is working in his battle with Stage 4 prostate cancer.
In a BBC interview, Taylor said the drug – Lutetium-177 – has extended his life “for five years.”
The 62-year-old Taylor first was diagnosed with the disease in 2018. He went public with the information last November.
After that, a scientist suggested nuclear medicine treatment with Lutetium-177, which reportedly targets cancer cells.
“It can’t see healthy cells,” Taylor told BBC News. He said his first round of treatments was six weeks ago. “It kills stage four cancer in your bones. And so what it’s effectively done is extend my life for five years.”
The drug received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration in March 2022 and has “proven to significantly improve prostate cancer survival rates and quality of life, as well as extend the time it takes for the disease to progress,...

It’s been nearly a year since Andy Taylor revealed that he has been fighting stage IV metastatic prostate cancer, and now, the Duran Duran guitarist is back with a positive update: thanks to a new “nuclear medicine,” he feels his life has been extended for five years.
The update came when Taylor appeared on BBC Breakfast on Friday, August 11th. Speaking with the show’s hosts, the 62-year-old explained that he was contacted by scientists after he went public with his cancer diagnosis (via a letter read at Duran Duran’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction). They took a “deep dive into [Taylor’s] genetic profile and the specific genomic mutations present in his cancer,” and ultimately recommended he try a medicine called Lutetium 177.

No, it’s not a Mad Lib generated to excite kids who grew up in the early 2000s: a Jonas brother is starring in a movie directed by Michael Moscovitz — aka Anne Hathaway’s love interest in “The Princess Diaries.”
Nick Jonas and filmmaker Robert Schwartzman have been friends since the early days of their fame. They met when Schwartzman’s band Rooney, which gained prominence after appearing on another early-aughts staple “The O.C.”, opened on tour for Jonas Brothers.
But they never officially worked together until they collaborated on the indie “The Good Half,” a comedic drama that premieres this week at Tribeca Festival. It’s the third time directing for Schwartzman, who is more often behind the camera since “The Princess Diaries” and in 2018 co-founded the distribution company Utopia.
In “The Good Half,” Jonas plays a writer named Renn, who travels home to Cleveland for his mother’s funeral.

To kick off their headlining set, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame group quickly dispatched several of their biggest hits, including “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Notorious,” and “A View to a Kill.” In a career-spanning sequence befitting the ethos behind their 2021 LP, Future Past, the band reached as far back as their 1981 debut single “Planet Earth,” while touching on key eras with tracks like 1984’s “The Reflex,” 1993’s “Ordinary World,” and their latest LP’s “Anniversary.”
The night also included the first live rendition of the Future Past duet “Give It All Up” with Tove Lo, who performed with the band and separately earlier in the day. Following 1981’s “Girls on Film” as the main set’s closer, the band returned with a double Rio encore of “Save a Prayer” and the iconic title track.

Let’s take a trip back in time to the early 1980s at the height of David Bowie’s popularity.
MTV launched in 1981 with the words, “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.” The first video played was The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Quite appropriate.
MTV stands for music television because that’s what it was. MTV played music videos all day, every day — 24 hours of videos.
The network brought artists into our homes for the first time. We no longer just listened to the music; we watched it. This helped launch some of the biggest names in music of the time. It turned artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Boy George, and Duran Duran into stars.
David Bowie had some of his biggest commercial successes during this time, partially because of MTV.

One evening in 2008, Neil Cross posed perhaps the most important question he’s ever asked. The TV writer and novelist, on the phone to a BBC producer, was being praised for a treatment he’d put together for a new London-set series about a volatile trench coat-wearing detective. But there was a problem: the lead character’s name had to change – and an alternative was needed immediately.
“At this point, it was just a show in development,” Cross recalls. “I shouted to my wife in the kitchen: ‘What’s the best name: Luther or Solomon?’ and she went: ‘Luther!’ So I said into the phone, ‘He’s called Luther.’”
Fifteen years and five series later, the first of which was released in 2010, it’s impossible to imagine Idris Elba striding around London, announcing his arrival at crime scenes with a flash of his badge and a gruff: “Solomon.” Elba is...

Detroit-manufactured Bruce Campbell is a cult legend who sawed his way into every genre. Evil Dead Rise, the fifth installment of the franchise most associated with the actor, opens a new book on April 21, and it will be the first not to lead with his chin. He isn’t taunting the sacred geometry of the “Necronomicon Ex-Mortis,” Campbell was busy. He is always busy. He has authored novels, comic books, and screenplays, and has directed productions on big screens and small. Campbell is the star attraction of several franchise fandoms, beloved at the Comic-Con circuit and, believe it or else, crooned Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf” for an Old Spice commercial, besides hosting the short-lived Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

The most important character in Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel Daisy Jones & The Six? It’s the music – and any devotee of the book, a fictional oral history of a Seventies rock band, will have strong feelings about exactly how it should sound. It might have shades of Stevie Nicks, a touch of Joni Mitchell, a dash of The Eagles’ soft rock – and it has to feel vital, like it “takes a piece of your heart out and shows it to you”, as the group’s singer Billy Dunne puts it. The success of Prime Video’s Daisy Jones TV adaptation, then, was always going to ride on the songs – but how do you write the perfect track for an entirely made-up artist?

"Donnie Darko," the 2001 Richard Kelly-directed mind-bender of a movie about time travel, death, and the dreadfully existential experience that is high school is memorable for many reasons. Today, if you so much as mention the cult film, images of Frank the rabbit and his shot-out eye immediately come to mind. Frank is the stuff of nightmares, enhancing the movie's atmosphere with his mysterious and ominous presence in the title character's life. However, Frank's creepiness is only one part — albeit a big one — of the film's peculiarities, none of which would be anywhere near as effective if it weren't for one major thing: the music.
The score for "Donnie Darko" is perhaps just as memorable as Frank, that pesky jet engine, the incredible finale, and that one uncomfortable scene in Donnie's (Jake Gyllenhaal) therapist's office. It is the thing that sets the tone for the entire movie, kicking things off...

ABC’s annual “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” rang in 2023 with a victory for the network as just under 14 million viewers tuned in to watch the ball drop at midnight, though it failed to beat its numbers from last year.
“Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2023,” which featured performances from Duran Duran, Wiz Khalifa and Betty Who, among others, drew in 13.7 million viewers on average and earned a 4.1 rating among adults 18-49 in the 11:30 p.m. to 12:36 a.m. hour, which is considered the first hour of the late-night day part, according to Nielsen.
As the clock grew closer to midnight, the New Year’s special averaged 17.8 million total viewers and earned a ratings score of a 5.3 in the 18-49 demographic during the midnight quarter-hour from 11:45 p.m. to 12:00 am.

Andy Cohen is done with Ryan Seacrest’s long-running New Year’s Eve drama.
Seacrest previously said on “Live! with Kelly and Ryan” that Cohen ignored Seacrest’s attempt to say hi to him during the broadcast. While Cohen’s CNN co-host Anderson Cooper waved to Seacrest, the “American Idol” producer claimed Cohen gave him the cold shoulder and “did not turn around” to acknowledge him 10 feet away from the stage.
Bravo mega-producer Cohen reacted to Seacrest’s statement, calling Cooper to clarify whether or not Seacrest was spotted during the live broadcast, on a recent episode of SiriusXM’s “Andy Cohen Live” podcast.
“I didn’t see Anderson turn around and wave. Usually what Anderson will do, and I should, I should call him back and ask him about this, frankly. But I think he’ll yell at me if I do… usually if he’s waving at Ryan,...
