The Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir paid tribute to his band mate Phil Lesh following the death of the bassist Friday.
On social media, the guitarist credited Lesh with introducing him to much of the music that would inform his own playing style, as well as influence the Dead’s improvisational music.
“At the age of seventeen, I listened to the John Coltrane Quartet, focusing on McCoy Tyner’s work, feeding Coltrane harmonic and rhythmic ideas to springboard off of – and I developed an approach to guitar playing based off of it.

It’s one last waltz for Robbie and Marty.
Variety reports that Martin Scorsese is directing the filming of a tribute concert dedicated to his late friend and collaborator Robbie Robertson for a concert film. The Blackbird Presents (Outlaw Music Festival)-produced concert, called “Life Is a Carnival: A Musical Celebration of Robbie Robertson,” will take place Thursday at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. Plans for the release of the future film have not been set.
Robertson, the legendary musician and songwriter best known for his work with the legendary roots rock outfit The Band, died in 2023 at age 80. His relationship with Scorsese went back to the 1970s, when Scorsese directed “The Last Waltz,” the 1978 star-studded concert film commemorating The Band’s final performance. Robertson then worked as a composer, music supervisor, or consultant on many of Scorsese’s films, including “Raging Bull,” “The Color of Money,” “Casino,” and “The Irishman.

No two Grateful Dead concerts are ever alike, but the point where they fully diverge from reality as we know it is often the same. Five songs into the second set, the band sets their instruments down and all non-rhythm section members — in its current iteration as Dead & Company, that includes longtime frontman and rhythm guitarist Bob Weir, lead guitarist and vocalist John Mayer, and keyboard wizard Jeff Chimenti — exit the stage. Electronic music loops begin to play as the band’s two drummers and bassist, collectively known as the Rhythm Devils, engage in an improvisational ritual featuring hundreds of different drums from around the world. The extensive drum interlude sees them devising a new beat from scratch, mirroring how our tribal ancestors created music in the first place.
Soon after, two more people exit the stage. The section of the show referred to as “Drums” on every setlist is over,...

The summer of 2015 was a culminating moment in Bill Walton’s life. He’d been seeing the Grateful Dead, in all of its iterations, for 48 years by that point.
