The minute you see the words “The Addams Family,” no doubt you snap your fingers twice.. The Addams clan has seen several incarnations since debuting as a series of The New Yorker cartoons penned by Charles Addams in 1938. The cartoons and the various films and television shows that rose in their wake perfectly blend the humorous and the macabre while focusing on the tight-knit family of Gomez, Morticia, their children Pugsley and Wednesday, and Uncle Fester.
The latest iteration is Tim Burton’s series “Wednesday,” set to debut on Netflix on November 23. The series centers on a teenage Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) trying to solve many mysteries, one being how to cement her identity outside the shadow of her ever-glamorous mother, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Wednesday is also tasked with harnessing her budding psychic ability to solve a serial killer case at Nevermore Academy and cracking a murder mystery that involved her parents 25 years ago.

Horror satire takes swipe at image-conscious music TV industry.
Dear White People writer-director Justin Simien has partnered with Sight Unseen, the new production company launched by Julia Lebedev, Eddie Vaisman, and Oren Moverman, on the feature Bad Hair.
The project is a horror satire set against the rise of the New Jack Swing fusion genre in the late 1980s as an ambitious young woman gets a weave in order to survive the image-conscious world of music television. Matters take a dark turn when she realises the new hair may possess a mind of its own.
Sight Unseen vice-president of development Angel Lopez will oversee the film for the company. Lebedev and Lopez produced Simien’s first feature Dear White People, while Lebedev served as executive producer on the Netflix series of the same name that Simien created.

We already know that Bruno Mars is sexy as hell, but it never hurts to be reminded of that fact over and over again. The "24K Magic" singer graces the cover of WSJ magazine's men's fashion issue, and it will make you want to put your Versace (or, you know, your H&M dress) on the floor. In addition to looking so good in the photos, Bruno, who recently wowed the world with his Prince tribute at the Grammys, opens up about everything from his upcoming world tour to his epic Carpool Karaoke session with James Corden. See his best quotes below. On his style: "The style stuff all comes from watching my dad - the pinkie rings, the pompadour, everything. My dad would take me to school in some big, busted-up Cadillac, and he'd be wearing a rhinestone jacket and have his hair all whipped and greased up, flashy glasses,...

[Editor’s Note: “Girl, I must warn you…” this review will make liberal use of New Edition, Bobby Brown, and Bell Biv Devoe song titles and lyrics. Why? That’s “My Prerogative.”]
It may seem like a stretch to compare Bet’s “The New Edition Story” to the critically acclaimed biopic “Straight Outta Compton.” After all, N.W.A.’s gangsta rap courted controversy while New Edition’s lyrics only got salty when they accused “Mr. Telephone Man” of a faulty connection. Nevertheless, just as N.W.A. shaped hip-hop, the miniseries gives rightful context to how influential New Edition was on its own. Styled as a New Edition of the Jackson 5, the group perfected the model for all the boy bands to come, including New Kids on the Block, Boyz II Men, ’N Sync, and the Backstreet Boys. They also successfully transitioned from the bubble gum style of their early songs to becoming pioneers of New Jack Swing.

As with N.W.A., the drama of just being in New Edition is part of the story’s trainwreck/bootstrap appeal.

After paying tribute to the victims of the Pulse Orlando shootings with his music video for “Thief” earlier in the summer, as well as debuting an unreleased Jack Ü remix, Ookay is back with a new five track Ep titled Cocoon.
First up is “Long Time,” a downtempo vocal collaboration with buzzing synth chords, slow rolling drums, and somber piano notes layered underneath a smoky vocal delivery. Ookay delivers some unique drops, suddenly picking up the pace with four by four rhythms, wonky vocal sample melodies and deep bass stabs.
“New Jack Swing” is a unique take on bass house, with minimal synth growl patterns, skittery drum beats, and dark vibes. “Back Again” lightens things up again with a soulful future bass tune, complete with electronically treated vocals, upbeat trap rhythms, and soaring synth melodies.
“Sure” is another downtempo vocal number, utilizing a plucky string lead layered over mid tempo beats and spacious atmosphere.

I feel like the song New Jack Hustler was kind of ahead of its time but at the same time is a timeless song that will hold up in any era. I wish I knew where he was sampling from in this tune and if he’s not, that’s one incredible originally made up beat and sound. I mean talk about a tough rap song. And the fact that it’s featured in a movie where Wesley Snipes is a kingpin drug dealer and Ice-t is the actual cop going after him? It just makes it all the better. There’s really not

Fall Out Boy and Boyz II Men narrowed the gap between pop-punk and R&B with an outsized performance of "Motownphilly" on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, closing out the show's latest "Mash Up Monday" series.
The outfit — dubbed, naturally, "Fall Out Boyz II Men" — delivered a blistering rendition of Boyz II Men's 1991 New Jack Swing smash. Fall Out Boy's pummeling power chord chug gave the song some extra heft, but not so much to drown out the song's scintillating horn riff or Boyz II Men's indelible vocals.

Years before the release of her 2003 debut album, Frank, Amy Winehouse entered a recording studio for the first time as part of Sweet 'n' Sour, a hip-hop duo she formed with friend and fellow singer Juliette Ashby. The duo started the group — which Winehouse would later call "the little, white, Jewish Salt-n-Pepa" — at age 10, constructing their own vocal melodies and verses.
A few years later, producer Alan Glass, Ashby's stepfather who had already recognized the pair's singing abilities, brought them into the studio to record three songs: "Glam Chicks," "Spinderella...

Songs On Screen: All week Hitfix will be featuring tributes by writers to their favorite musical moments from TV and film. Check out the full series here. Last month when we did our Best Year in Film History series, I picked second and, as a result, I was able to select the correct answer: The best year in American cinematic history, at least over the last 50 years, is 1974 and any disagreements sadden and bore me. With that undeclared, but indisputable, victory in my back pocket, I was able to happily let colleagues choose many of my personal favorites for our Songs on Screen battle. You won't hear me say anything negative about "Fight the Power" and its centrality to "Do the Right Thing" or the evocative pull of "Nobody Does It Better" (or a slew of other James Bond themes) or the timelessness of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Nor will...

Though the two bands look bizarre sharing a stage, Reo Speedwagon's emotive hard rock and Imagine Dragons' sculpted alt rock somehow make sense together. Imagine Reo SpeedDragons united this week on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, performing the elder band's 1978 hit "Roll With the Changes."

Anne Hathaway came in like a "Wrecking Ball" for Thursday's Lip Sync Battle versus Emily Blunt. Borrowing Miley Cyrus' distinct video look of a tank-top and tighty whiteys, Hathaway mimes the lyrics with desperation, even slipping in an up-close diss to Blunt with the line "I guess I should've let you win." But the grand finale – a swing on an actual wrecking ball – whips the crowd into a frenzy, leaving her opponent (and host LL Cool J) speechless on the sidelines.

Two of the music world's realest Gs joined forces on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday night: Warren and Kenny G took the stage for a funk-drenched, yet smooth, performance of the latter's 1994 classic "Regulate."
Kenny G dutifully recreated the song's slinking synth line on his trusty soprano saxophone, but also provided melodic assistance as the late, great Nate Dogg's original vocals played over the loudspeaker. While he stayed on top of the hook at first, it wasn't long before Kenny G was making outlandish runs on his sax as a...

Ariana Grande's summer jam "Problem" was successful because it was an amalgam of a things we already knew we liked. She reminds us of classic Mariah Carey in her range; there's that four-part harmony that's like the Andrews sister; there's hints of New Jack Swing and the funk of the horns section from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop"; even if you don't know the verse, everyone can sing "you-hoo-hoo!"; Iggy Azalea is/was on fire at time of impact. Grande has released a new song, "Best Mistake," ahead of her second album "My Everything," out on Aug. 25. This song may similarly ring a couple bells. There's a particular treatment to the keyboards that are reminiscent of Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball." The vocal bend and auto-tune filter is a reminder of Rihanna. Those chimes make us think our princess is in another castle. But unlike her first big number,...

For a generation of kids, Saturday morning at 11am was appointment-television time. You put away your cereal bowl and switched from cartoons or pro-wrestling to a channel a little further down the dial. After a minute or two, you'd finally see that signature animated train — a funky, pulsing engine grooving down inner-city elevated tracks (and later, around the world), puffing out rainbow-colored smoke. Then a high-pitched voice screamed out the words you'd waited all week to hear: "It's the Sooooouuullll Traaaaaiiiiiinnnn!"

New Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit movie delivered boring plot & a couple good action scenes. Paramount Pictures released their new action/drama flick, "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit." I just checked it out, and thought it was for the most part, utterly boring. The plotline didn't really interest me at all, so I had a hard time staying awake. It served up a few good actions scenes, but man, were they too far and in between. It stars: Chris Pine, Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner, Peter Andersson, Kenneth Branagh, David Paymer, and Colm Feore . In the new flick, Jack Ryan (Chris Pine), a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps, gets critically injured when his helicopter is shot down in Afghanistan. During his rehabilitation, he attracts the attention of Thomas Harper (Kevin Costner), a CIA agent who is impressed by Ryan's ability to recognize complex patterns. Ryan is recruited and sent back...

The cruddy spin offs, the endless badgering Bill Murray about Ghostbusters 3 - it's all testimony to the genius of the surprisingly salty and definitely prescient Ghostbusters (Channel 5, Sunday, 6.55pm GMT)
"Ray, when someone asks you if you're a god, you say yes" - Winston Zeddemore
It's a wonder that Dan Aykroyd isn't a full-blown recluse right now. Judging by all the interviews and soundbites he's done on the subject – not to mention the mountain of half-formed almost-speculation that appears immediately afterwards – the poor man must spend his entire life fending off questions about Ghostbusters 3. If it'll be animated or live action. If it'll star a new generation of Ghostbusters. If Bill Murray will appear in it or not. If it'll even happen at all. At this stage, Ghostbusters 3 is the Chinese Democracy of paranormal comedies, and all this fuss is down to how incredibly well-regarded the first Ghostbusters is.

According to the first count against him, Brown was driving under the influence with a prior conviction and refused to take a chemical test when he was collared. The refusal allegation carries a mandatory, minimum two-day stay in the slammer, while driving with a prior conviction carries...

Bobby Brown's prerogative was apparently to have another run-in with the law. An Lapd spokeswoman confirms to E! News that the New Jack Swinger was arrested for driving under the influence early Wednesday. The incident occurred at approximately 1 a.m., when a police cruiser spotted the 43-year-old Brown weaving between lanes around Corbin Avenue and Ventura Boulevard and pulled him over. Smelling alcohol, officers administered a field sobriety test, which the singer promptly flunked. He was taken into custody and booked at a nearby police station. According to booking records, he remains behind bars on $25,000 bail. No court date has been set yet. This is the second DUI arrest for...

The last time Christina Applegate hosted Saturday Night Live, Bill Clinton had been president for just four months, Silk’s “Freak Me” ruled the Billboard charts, and Justin Bieber, Chloe Moretz, and three of One Direction’s five members hadn’t yet been born.
Yes, the onetime star of Married With Children hasn’t been to Studio 8h since May of 1993 — a fact you won’t be able to forget after watching these promos.
But even though the videos are a little too obsessed with the gap between Applegate’s first and second hosting stints, there’s some good stuff here.

Music fans, rest assured. Tom Cruise, a bunch of garish costumes and set design, and the hair metal tunes from "Rock Of Ages" won't be your only option this weekend at the movies. For those looking for a more satisfying musical outing, head to your local arthouse for "Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap," a documentary that explores the birth of hip hop and how it has turned into a global phenomenon.
Premiering earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, the film is co-directed by Ice-t and Andy Baybutt ("The Band Aid Story") and takes an in-depth look at the craft of rhyming, with interviews from some of the biggest stars in rap, including Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Caz, Nas, Mos Def, Eminem, Chuck D, Krs-One, Run-dmc, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg. And not only that, it's a great soundtrack to boot. Boastings artists like Nas, Wu-Tang Clan,...

Let’s call it New Justin Swing. On Justin Bieber’s new single, “Die In Your Arms,” he’s bringing back retro soul that blends the vocal feel of ‘60s Motown crossed with the synths and beats of the late-‘80s New Jack Swing movement. In the sloping, mid-tempo ballad, which also owes a debt to Michael Jackson, Bieber, who scuffled with a photographer over the weekend, has it so bad for his girl that he if he could just “die in your arms, I wouldn’t mind.” He’d go finger-snapping and with a grin on his face. He’s the opposite of a player here: he’s...

As one-third of the iconic girl group, the feisty Lisa Lopes blazed a trail for today's rebellious pop sirens.

In an era when being as bold as you wanna be can be good for business, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, one-rebellious-third of the iconic girl group TLC, might not have seemed like an anomaly among the Rihannas, Katys and Britneys. But back in the early 1990s, you were bound to arch a few eyebrows if your thing was to rock condoms as eye patches and spit verses like, "If I need it in the morning or the middle of the night, I ain't too proud to beg."
Philadelphia-born Lisa was just barely out of her teens in 1991, when she joined a trio under the direction of manager Perri "Pebbles" Reid, an R&B singer herself and then-wife of Laface Records co-founder Antonio "La" Reid.

It was April 1992. Euro Disneyland would open its doors in Paris, France; a jury would acquit four police officers in the beating of Rodney King, setting off six days of massive rioting in Los Angeles; and producer Teddy Riley would put the finishing touches on the debut album of a brand new girl group called Swv.
The music scene was a mash up of Grunge, characterized by bands like Nirvana; pop, brought to the masses by boy groups like New Kids on the Block; and New Jack Swing, the sweet spot for dancing, crooning heartthrobs like Guy.
Twenty years later, music is "busy and lyrically it seems young," says Tamara "Taj" Johnson-George, one of the three Sisters With Voices (Swv) whose new album, "I Missed Us," hopes to bring back the love-inspired sounds that catapulted them to the top of the 90s music charts and into an indelible spot in R&B history.

Impact wrestling is currently advertising the return of its most exciting tag team the Motorcity Machine Guns. But who are they actually going to wrestle when they return? Team 3D are long gone. Beer Money are feuding with each other. Morgan and Crimson have gone kaput. Ok, there’s the obvious choice of tag team champions Samoa Joe and Magnus but should they really be entered into a top feud right off the bat? This only goes to highlight the distinct lack of depth in tag team wrestling as a whole. Tna once had an amazing tag division that helped set it apart from the new champs every week approach of the WWE, but these days they too have seemingly given up the ghost.
It hasn’t always been like this though. Tag teams were once held with great esteem in the business we love, and the tag titles were...

Bobby Brown's latest prerogative? To prove his innocence in a court of law. The former New Jack Swinger entered a plea of not guilty to DUI-related charges today in a Los Angeles courtroom stemming from last month's drunk- driving arrest. Brown was popped on March 26 after he was pulled over in the San Fernando Valley for talking on his cell phone, and cops suspected he had been drinking. After flunking a field sobriety test, he was taken into custody and later charged with three misdemeanors—driving under the influence, driving with a blood alcohol greater than 0.08 and driving with a suspended license. The "Don't Be Cruel" singer was not in court but his attorney, Tiffany Feder,...

Bobby Brown's latest prerogative? Fight his DUI charges in court. After getting popped for allegedly driving under the influence on Monday, the troubled New Jack Swinger is now speaking out in his own defense claiming cops got it wrong. "Everyone is innocent until proven guilty and Mr. Brown was not driving erratically. He was speaking on his cell phone. Mr. Brown has not been convicted of anything associated with this incident," Brown's attorney, Tiffany Feder, tells E! News. The R&B singer was pulled over by California Highway Patrol who purportedly noticed him talking on his cell phone, and after approaching him, officers suspected he had been drinking. He was subsequently taken into...

It's a good time to be a TV fan: A few weeks ago, "Cougar Town" finally returned after a hiatus that stretched beyond fans' endurance; the long-absent "Mad Men" rewards our epic patience in less than two weeks; and "Game of Thrones" finally comes back April 1, after a completely normal between-seasons gap that felt like an endless stint in one of Robert Baratheon's jails. (Ok, so it might have felt that endless had there not been at least two dozen good shows that aired during the "GoT"-free time frame, but in fairness to "Game of Thrones" and the rabid loyalty the HBO drama inspires, none of those other shows featured both zombies and incestuous sex. You can't get that on "The Good Wife.")
But the program that has endured perhaps the most difficult wait of all has only been gone about four months, but it was a long,...

I’ll be honest, I can’t really picture millions of macho American football fans putting aside their Miller Lites and nacho supreme platters to pay hushed attention to Madonna belting out “Like a Virgin” on Sunday. I could be wrong, but recent halftime show performances by air guitar-friendly classic rock bands like the Who, U2, and Aerosmith seem a little safer. Even a red-state songstress like Faith Hill seems like a smarter choice since she’s already wooed dudes with her rendition of the Monday Night Football theme. I suppose Madge will bring a whole new audience to an NFL broadcast,...

This year we lost some of our brightest stars: artists that spanned the genres of rock, hip-hop and pop, as well as TV and film. They were at different stages in their careers — some just starting to rise, others already legends — but all left a distinct mark on pop culture, and their deaths affected us deeply.
Beloved hip-hop icons Nate Dogg and Heavy D influenced the generations of artists who followed them. Nate (born Nathaniel Hale) died at age 41 after suffering several health setbacks related to a stroke. One of the key players in the birth of the West Coast G-Funk sound, the crooner's silky smooth vocals touched classic tracks from Snoop Dogg and Warren G to 50 Cent and Ludacris.

Last month, Florence and the Machine singer Florence Welch pulled double duty on "Saturday Night Live," not only performing but also making a rather unexpected cameo in a sketch called "New Jack Thanksgiving," during which she vamped her way through a sultry, turkey-themed R&B jam.
Of course, if you caught this past weekend's "SNL," you may have thought she showed up again, this time in a skit about a canine-centric courtroom drama called "Doggie Duty." Only it wasn't Welch: It was host Katy Perry, who nailed a note-perfect impression of Flo on a song called "The Dog Trial Is Over." Yes, it was about as random as you'd think, and yes, Welch found it to be...

One writer makes the case for why you should be watching Simon Cowell's latest import.

"X Factor" judge Simon Cowell

Imagine a reality competition that mixes the drama of "Dancing With the Stars," the variety-show feel of "America's Got Talent," the weekly singing battles of "American Idol" and the cutthroat competition between celebrity judges of "The Voice." That would be amazing, right?
Well, guess what? It exists, and it's called "The X Factor." But chances are you're not watching it. Simon Cowell's bid to make "Factor" the new "Idol" hasn't taken off as quickly as he brashly predicted earlier this year. The show is pulling in a solid 9-plus million viewers per night, which is about half of the 20 million Simon promised. But Nielsen recently reported that the strong ratings helped the Fox Network — which...

During their lukewarm cold open, in which Jason Sudeikis played a “raw and unleashed” version of Mitt Romney (and by raw and unleashed they meant, wore a leather jacket and made “Obama hair” jokes,) it seemed like it was going to be business– or in this case, politics– as usual for Saturday Night Live. Then, as we’d all hoped, the Muppets showed up!
No, they weren’t hosting. (Though, they pondered why they weren’t. First the Oscars, now this!) Rather, they’d stopped by to help out their pal Jason Segel, who was having his first go as SNL host.

There will never be another Heavy D.
When the Mount Vernon, New York, Mc debuted in 1987 as part of the group Heavy D & the Boyz, he made an immediate impact with his infectious dance hits. For the most part, Heav directed his material toward the ladies and even dubbed himself the Overweight Lover. With his music, Waterbed Heav oozed sex appeal, paving the way for other big-boned MCs like the Notorious B.I.G., Fat Joe and Rick Ross to garner a female fanbase.
Heavy was also a noted dancer and paired each of his hits with well-choreographed steps. It's difficult to imagine where the likes of Soulja Boy and Cali Swag District would be without Heavy D's contributions.
On November 8, Heavy D left us, but his music will live on forever.
