Brisbane, Aug 19 (Ians) Australia’s veteran opener Usman Khawaja said he will aim to continue playing Test cricket for a long time if he continues to tick three crucial boxes with the side. Khawaja scored 496 runs in the recently-concluded Ashes 2023, being the highest run-scorer of the series, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
The next Ashes series will be held in Australia in 2025-26. “In 2025…one series at a time I go with. You can get ahead of yourself and look to that time (in 2025) and think, ‘I can probably get there’, but I don’t want to (do that).”
“I like playing one summer at a time and seeing how the body is going, how the mind is going and whether I am enjoying it. It is those three things. I am ticking those three boxes at the moment so I will keep playing,” Khawaja was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

Manchester, July 16 (Ians) Former fast-bowler Mitchell Johnson has suggested that Australia need to pick Marcus Harris and Michael Neser in place of David Warner and Scott Boland for the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford starting on July 19.
Australia’s three-wicket loss in the third Ashes Test at Leeds has put the spotlight on the positions of Warner and Boland in the playing eleven. Warner has averaged a meagre 23.5, with just one fifty from six innings to show. Boland, on the other hand, has picked only two wickets in the two Tests he’s played.
“Put simply, Warner goes out because he’s out of form, Michael Neser comes in because he’s in form and Mitch Marsh retains his place for the same reason. Marcus Harris has been waiting in the wings for a long time since being an unlucky omission during the last home Ashes series and deserves a shot.

Manchester, July 16 (Ians) Australia opener Marcus Harris said he is ‘ready to go’ if he’s given a chance to play in the remaining two matches of the ongoing Ashes 2023 series in Old Trafford and The Oval.
Harris’ last outing in first-class cricket was in mid-May, where he struck 122 not out for Gloucestershire in a County Championship match against Durham and has been with the Australian team since the World Test Championship final in June as a back-up specialist opener.
Since Australia’s three-wicket defeat to England in the third Ashes at Headingley, there has been chatter around David Warner making way for Harris at Old Trafford.
In the 2019 Ashes, Harris made only 58 runs in six innings, though he feels he’s much more experienced now in adapting to the rigours of an away Ashes series.

London, July 11 (Ians) Former Australia cricketer Ian Healy reckoned that David Warner was not good enough in the third Test at Headingley but he still wants the 36-year-old veteran to open alongside Usman Khawaja in the fourth Test in Manchester, starting from July 19.
Warner was dismissed for just 4 in the first innings and 1 in the second innings, caught by Zak Crawley in the slips off the bowling of his arch nemesis Stuart Broad on both occasions as Australia lost the Headingley Test to England.
“What he put out at Headingley wasn’t good enough. His technique recently had been much better, head over the ball, but it all disappeared at Headingley,” Healy said on Senq Breakfast.
“He was jumping around, he was unstable at the crease and he was distracted by the crowd. It wasn’t good enough and we need better because he’s putting Marnus (Labuschagne) and Steve Smith...

London, June 5 (Ians) Australia captain Pat Cummins spoke about the intense workload for the Australian team for the next two months, including featuring in the World Test Championship final against India, saying his team prefers to be slightly underdone rather than being overloaded in playing matches.
Only two members from Australia’s squad – David Warner and Cameron Green – featured in Ipl 2023, while Michael Neser, Steven Smith, Marcus Harris and Marnus Labuschagne played county matches.
It means that majority of the players in the Wtc final squad, including Cummins, haven’t played a lot of competitive cricket since this year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy series ended in early March in India. After playing in the Wtc final, Australia will stay on in England to play in the five-Test Ashes series, ending on July 31.

London, June 4 (Ians) Fast-bowling all-rounder Michael Neser has been named as a replacement for Josh Hazlewood in Australias squad for the World Test Championship Final clash against India starting at The Oval from June 7.
As per the International Cricket Council (Icc), Hazlewood has been ruled out of the marquee match due to his ongoing left Achilles and left side issue. Neser, who has played two Tests and as many ODIs for Australia, has been brought in for the Wtc Final squad after his inclusion was approved by the Event Technical Committee.
Hazlewood had also missed this ‘ear’s tour of India due to a left Achilles tendon issue, which delayed his arrival in Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023. He then left the tournament after playing only three games for Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rcb) due to a side issue.
Hazlewood had also missed a majority of the last two home summers due to side strains.

For India, uncapped in-form left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been included as a stand-by player alongside middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav and right-arm pacer Mukesh Kumar.
Jaiswal, who amassed 625 runs in 14 innings of Ipl 2023 for Rajasthan Royals, including a century and five fifties, replaces Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is reportedly getting married in the initial days of June.
In the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy, Jaiswal scored 315 runs in five matches, averaging 45, including making a fifty and a century. Melbourne, May 25 (Ians) Former Australia fast-bowler Trent Copeland believes the side will bring the best out of veteran opener David Warner to perform in next month’s World Test Championship (Wtc) Final against India and The Ashes in England.
Apart from a defiant 200 against South Africa at the McG in December last year, Warner has struggled for runs in the format, making a total of just 26 runs in three innings in this year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in India before returning home due to injuries.
Moreover, Warner averages only 26.04 in Tests in England, and had a terrible time in England during the last Ashes tour in 2019, averaging 9.50, and veteran pacer Stuart Broad took his wicket seven times.
“Warner has been a great of the game in all formats for Australia over a long period of time. What I love about this scenario is that (Warner) is a dog with a...

New Delhi, April 6 (Ians) Cricket Australia chief selector George Bailey has hinted that Marcus Harris is in line to be David Warner’s successor and will become Australia’s long-term Test opener.
Harris, who last played a Test in January 2022, spent last summer as the spare batter with the Australian Test squad before being overlooked in favour of Matthew Renshaw for the Scg Test, and was then left out of the squad that toured India.
But the 30-year-old received a vote of confidence on Thursday when he was named ahead of a host of other key batters in Cricket Australia’s contract list for the 2023-24 period.
Bailey has indicated that Harris is their favored choice as they have important Tests against England and New Zealand scheduled in the next 12 months, along with home series against Pakistan and West Indies.

Melbourne, April 6 (Ians) Spinner Todd Murphy earned his first national contracts, as Cricket Australia announced the extended 24-player national men’s contract list on Thursday.
Murphy has earned his first national contract after impressing on the Border-Gavaskar India tour, where he claimed a five-wicket haul on Test debut.
He was joined by the fast bowler Lance Morris as first-time contracted players to the national side, with Sean Abbott, Michael Neser and Jhye Richardson also been promoted and offered a contract for the next year.
Dropping out of the list is recently retired former white-ball captain Aaron Finch and spinner Mitchell Swepson, while Matthew Wade, Matthew Renshaw, Peter Handscomb and Matthew Kuhnemann have also been overlooked for a contract.

Sydney, Jan 11 (Ians) Australia’s national cricket selectors on Wednesday selected a four-man spin arsenal for the upcoming four-Test tour of India with rookie spinner Todd Murphy making the grade on the back of some superb performances at the domestic level and for Australia A.
Murphy joins experienced campaigner Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson as potential spin partners for Nathan Lyon on a tour on which their bowling resources are expected to be stretched to the full.
Agar has recently made it back to the Test squad and played the third and final Test against South Africa and continues to be preferred as the national selectors confirmed an 18-player squad for the four-Test Border-Gavaskar series.
Swepson had played four of Australia’s five Tests on the subcontinent last year for a return of 10 wickets at 45 and was favoured over white-ball leg-spinner Adam Zampa

New Delhi, Jan 1 (Ians) Australia head coach Andrew McDonald believes that there is no need for a practice game before starting their four-match Test series in India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in February-March.
Australia had done something similar while touring Pakistan last year, practising on pitches in Melbourne, before landing in the country shortly to participate in the series, which they won by 1-0. It is believed that before touring India and starting the series from February 9 in Nagpur, there will be a three-day camp for the Australian players in Sydney.
In 2017, Australia prepared for the India Test with a ten-day stint on specifically prepared pitches at the Icc academy in Dubai. Melbourne, Dec 30 (Ians) With Mitchell Starc and Cameron Green battling injuries, Australia’s national selectors on Friday called in reinforcements in the form of spinner Ashton Agar and batter Matthew Renshaw for the third and final Test against South Africa, starting in Sydney on January 4.

Perth, Nov 29 (Ians) Australia captain Pat Cummins has confirmed the make-up of the XI that will take the field for his side in the first Test against the West Indies here.
There are no major surprises in the final XI for the first home Test of the Australian summer, with Cummins confirming one change to the team that featured in the most recent Test match in Sri Lanka.
Experienced seamer Josh Hazlewood returns to Australia’s line-up, with back-up spinner Mitchell Swepson making way following Australia’s demoralising loss to Sri Lanka in Galle in July.
Swepson picked up figures of 3/103 in that match, but the 29-year-old was not selected in the squad for the West Indies series as Australia reverted to their standard line-up with three seamers and the solitary spinner.

Brisbane, Jan 18 (Ians) India will need 324 runs more, with all their wickets intact, when they come out to bat on Tuesday to win the fourth and final Test against Australia at The Gabba.
India reached 4/0 in their chase on 328 in the extended final session on Monday before rain started pouring in and umpires were forced to call for early Stumps. Only 1.5 overs could be bowled in India's second innings on Day Four as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 4 and 0 respectively.
The weather forecast for the final day isn't great and Australia will be praying that rain gods stay away so that they can win the Brisbane Test and win the Border-Gavaskar series, a trophy which they lost in India's last tour of 2018-19. On the other hand, a draw in the game would be sufficient for India to retain the coveted trophy.

Warner was the first wicket to fall as he got caught in the slips in the very first over of the innings bowled by Mohammed Siraj.

Brisbane, Jan 15 (Ians) Marnus Labuschagne scored yet another half century in the ongoing Test series as he helped Australia reach 153/3 at the end of the second session on Day One of the fourth and final Test against India at The Gabba.
At Tea, Australia were 153/3 with Labuschagne and Matthew Wade at the crease on 73* and 27* respectively.
Resuming at 65/2, both Steve Smith and Labuschagne scored freely and collected boundaries whenever the Indian bowlers erred in their line and lengths.
However, just when Australia looked to be in control, debutant off-spinner Washington Sundar claimed the big wicket of Smith at his individual score of 36, getting the prolific batsman caught at short mid-wicket by Rohit Sharma.
India could've got their fourth wicket soon after that had skipper Ajinkya Rahane not dropped the catch of Labuschagne at gully against Navdeep Saini.

Brisbane, Jan 14 (Ians) India have not named their playing XI for the fourth Test against Australia and will be announcing it on Friday before the match starts at The Gabba as they are monitoring the injuries of the players.
This was informed by batting coach Vikram Rathour on Thursday.
Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is suffering from an abdominal strain and is a doubtful starter for the series decider. If he doesn't play, the visitors can bring in Shardul Thakur to join Mohammed Siraj and Navdeep Saini in the pace department.
With Kl Rahul returning home due to a wrist injury and Mayank Agarwal hit on the hand at the nets, India also face a dilemma as they look to bring in someone to replace Hanuma Vihari, who injured his hamstring during the drawn third Test and is unlikely to play as the No. 6 batsman.

Brisbane, Jan 14 (Ians) Left-handed batsman Marcus Harris will open the innings for Australia alongside David Warner after rookie opener Will Pucovski was ruled out of the fourth and final Test against India beginning Friday due to the shoulder injury he suffered during the third Test in Sydney.

Sydney, Jan 8 (Ians) Prolific batsman Steve Smith on Friday ended Australia's near four-year drought of centuries against India after scoring 131 in the first innings of the ongoing third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Melbourne, Jan 1 (Ians) It is not just David Warner's numbers with the bat and his experience at the top of the batting order but also his energy that will boost Australia, batsman Marnus Labuschagne has said.

Melbourne, Dec 30 (Ians) Australia cricket players' stay in a bio-bubble zone throughout the Sydney and Brisbane Test matches will mean that they don't have to go for an additional isolation period for the Big Bash League (Bbl) games after the India-Australia Test series.

The report quoted an Australian team spokesman as saying that the right-handed batsman was receiving treatment for back soreness after reaching down for a ball, and would not return to training until Wednesday at the earliest.
The 32-year-old failed to appear for batting practice in the nets for more than an hour of what was Australia's main pre-match session ahead of the first game of the four-match series starting which begins from Thursday.

Adelaide, Dec 15 (Ians) Australia head coach Justin Langer on Tuesday stated that Marnus Labuschagne won't be opening the innings in the first Test of the upcoming four-match series against India. Langer though hinted that Matthew Wade could play as opener.
The Aussies, who had initially named David Warner, Will Pucovski and Joe Burns as openers for the first Test, suffered twin blows with Warner getting injured and Pucovski getting a blow on his head. Both the batsmen have been ruled out of the pink-ball Test which begins Thursday at the Adelaide Oval. And there are also doubts over Joe Burns who has had a terrible season. He failed in both the warm-up games and had struggled in Sheffield Shield cricket too. Left-handed opener Marcus Harris has been called up to the squad.

Sydney, Dec 14 (Ians) Right-arm pacer Sean Abbott has been ruled out of the first Test against India while all-rounder Moises Henriques have been added to the Australia squad for the Adelaide game which begins Thursday.
Abbott picked up a calf strain in the day-night tour match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday and will continue his rehabilitation, informed Cricket Australia on Monday. He is expected to re-join the squad for the Boxing Day Test.
Henriques was supposed to play the second warm-up match against India but a scan last Wednesday revealed a low-grade hamstring strain that subsequently ruled him out of the pink-ball fixture. However, the 33-year-old cleared a fitness Test on Monday morning and will join the Australian squad in Adelaide for the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Sydney, Dec 13 (Ians) Ben McDermott and Jack Wildermuth scored brilliant unbeaten hundreds but it was India who dominated the second warm-up game against Australia A which ended in a draw on Sunday at the Sydney Cricket Ground (Scg).
Chasing 473, Australia A reached 307/4 in the final session of the day when both teams decided to shake hands and end the match in a draw. McDermott remained not out at 107 while Wildermuth scored unbeaten 111.
Earlier, India declared their second innings on their overnight score of 386/4, giving Australia A an improbable target on the final day of the pink-ball practice game.
Senior India pacer Mohammed Shami once again provided the visitors with a great start as he sent back openers Joe Burns (1) and Marcus Harris (5) back to the dressing room within the first nine overs. Nic Maddinson, who came to bat at number three, also couldn't stay long at the crease and became...

New Delhi, Dec 13 (Ians) Legendary spinner Shane Warne has named his Australia XI for the upcoming first Test against India in which he has picked up Matthew Wade and Marcus Harris as openers.
Will Pucovski and David Warner, who seemed all set to open for Australia at the Adelaide Oval, have both been ruled out of the day-night Test which begins Thursday.
Warner had injured his adductor muscle in the field during the second Odi against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground (Scg), while Pucovski sustained a concussion in the tour match at the Drummoyne Oval last week.
Warne's first Test XI does not feature opener Joe Burns who has been struggling for form in the recent times. In the two tour games, Burns returned with scores of 4, 0, 0 and 1 and looked completely out of sorts. Warne has also picked Shaun Marsh as stand-by in case all-rounder Cameron Green doesn't get fit for the Adelaide Test.

Sydney, Dec 13 (Ians) Left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc will be rejoining the Australian squad on Monday ahead of the first Test of the four-match series against India scheduled to begin from December 17 at the Adelaide Oval.
Starc had left the Australian white-ball squad after the first of the three T20Is against India on compassionate grounds after learning of a family illness.
"Starc has advised Australian team management he is ready to re-enter the hub in Adelaide and will fly from Sydney on Monday with fellow Test squad members in the Australia A team," Cricket Australia said in a statement on Sunday.
He will fly on the chartered flight that will carry fellow Test squad members Sean Abbott, Joe Burns, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris and Mitch Swepson, along with India's touring party. It leaves the 30-year-old just two full days in Adelaide to prepare for the day-night Test.

Adelaide, Dec 12 (Ians) Left-handed opener Marcus Harris was added to Australia's squad for the first Test at Adelaide Oval that begins on December 17 after Will Pucovski was ruled out of the first Test on Saturday following a concussion during the first warm-up against the touring Indians earlier this week. The Aussies are already missing regular opener David Warner, who has already been ruled out due to groin injury.
Harris has experience of batting against India in the last series between the two sides Down Under. He got two 70s and four scores in the 20s in seven completed innings during that 2018-19 series.
Although he has not played for Australia since last year's Ashes, he has been among the runs in Australia's premier domestic first-class tournament this season, scoring a double ton and two fifties in three matches.
He also made 35 and unbeaten 25, batting at No.3, in the previous warm-up...

Adelaide, Dec 12 (Ians) Australia batsman Marnus Labuschagne, who bats at No. 3, says he is ready to open in the interest of his national team which faces a dearth of opening options following a groin injury to David Warner and a concussion scare to Will Pucovski. Both Warner and Pucovski have been ruled out of the first Test at Adelaide with the selectors bringing in left-hander Marcus Harris as replacement. There are also concerns over Joe Burns, the other opener, who is enduring poor form.
"Look, whatever the team needs I think that is our job to do as cricketers. It is about making sure that we do what is best for the team. If the team needs me to open, then that is what I'll do. But we'll just have to wait and see how things pan out with the few other moving parts currently. Like I said it is...
