- Pictured on one of six Canada commemorative postage stamps issued 24 January 2004 honoring living hockey players. Stamps were issued in booklet form and in a single souvenir sheet. Other players honored were Johnny Bower, Brad Park, Larry Robinson, Marcel Dionne, and Ted Lindsay.
- Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, 1961.
- Center/defenseman with the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins, 1937-1937 thru 1941-1942 & 1945-1946 thru 1954-1955.
- Coach of the NHL's Boston Bruins (1954-1955 thru 1960-1961 & 1962-1963 thru 1965-1966) and Washington Capitals (1974-1975 thru 1975-1976).
- While scouting for the Boston Bruins, he "discovered" then-future hall of famer Bobby Orr.
- Along with Bobby Bauer and Woody Dumart, formed "The Kraut Line" for the Boston Bruins.
