Season one of Netflix’s A Man on the Inside ended by setting the story up for a possible second season. Today, the streamer confirmed the critically acclaimed comedy has been renewed and will return for season two in 2025.

Created by Mike Schur, the series premiered on November 21, 2024 and immediately entered the Top 10 list of Netflix’s English TV series. A Man on the Inside season one also earned a spot on AFI’s 2024 TV programs of the year list.

The streamer has ordered a second season of A Man on the Inside, a comedy series starring Danson as Charles, a widower who, in the first season, goes to work for a private investigator (Lilah Richcreek Estrada) to investigate thefts in a retirement community. The series is inspired by the Oscar-nominated documentary The Mole Agent.

The renewal comes a few weeks after A Man on the Inside’s Nov. 21 premiere and on the heels of Danson earning a Golden Globe nomination for his performance. The series, created by Mike Schur (The Good Place, Parks and Recreation) and produced by Universal Television, was also named one of the American Film Institute’s TV programs of the year.

Netflix made the announcement on their official X account on Monday. The second season of the show is now slated to debut in 2025. The series debuted on Netflix on Nov. 21.

Ted Danson stars in the single-camera comedy, which is based on the Oscar-nominated Chilean documentary “The Mole Agent.”

From the get-go, A Man on the Inside tugs at various heartstrings — a wedding speech that’ll make you cry, a recruitment process that’ll make you laugh, a child-parent dynamic that’ll feel eerily relatable.

The show’s inciting incident comes when Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) challenges her retired professor father, Charles (Ted Danson), to find a project or a hobby that will bring some purpose and excitement into his stagnant life. Charles sees a classified ad seeking an “investigative assistant” who’s “aged 75–85,” and so begins his professional search for a jewelry thief.

Evan’s (Marc Evan Jackson) mother is a resident at Pacific View. When her necklace, a family heirloom, is stolen, Evan hires Julie (Lilah Richcreek Estrada), a private investigator, who in turn employs Charles to infiltrate the retirement residence and sniff out the thief. His snooping proves thought-provoking — touching on grief, complex family relationships, and debilitating diseases.

In Hollywood, there’s a colloquialism so prevalent it’s as likely to be spotted in its native habitat (advertising copy) as it is to be used by its intended targets (influencers and the like): “hilarious and heartfelt” — as in, “The new Netflix series, ‘A Man on the Inside,’ is hilarious and heartfelt.” The maxim’s roll-off-the-tongue simplicity makes it an easy one to let slip when you’re a PR rep writing plot synopsis after plot synopsis (which are all meant to sound the same anyway) or even a reporter writing blurb after blurb. But “hilarious and heartfelt” doesn’t really mean “hilarious and heartfelt” — at least, not to people in the biz who’ve co-opted its alliterative, widely applicable power. Instead, it often means the opposite: that whatever is being described as “hilarious and heartfelt” is actually “not funny” and “probably a bummer.”

Most of the time, describing a show as something a whole family can enjoy, from age 8 to 88, means a whole family will be fine having it on while they look at their phones. People like looking at their phones, so this is a thriving TV genre, encompassing the likes of Dancing With the Stars, The Floor and Judge Steve Harvey. But with Thanksgiving imminent, and thus the likelihood that you’re going to be gathering near a TV with loved ones of wide-ranging ages, Netflix has made a show the whole family can actually enjoy. A Man On The Inside is a caper, a buddy comedy and a meditation on grief, and pulls off all three effortlessly.

In Netflix’s A Man On The Inside, Ted Danson stars as Charles a retired professor who goes undercover in a retirement community to solve the mystery of a resident’s family heirloom that’s disappeared.

Based on the Maite Alberdi’s documentary The Mole Agent, the series, which launches today, could be seen as a limited project, a one and done investigation, but Danson and showrunner Mike Schur are hoping for more cases.

In the finale episode [Spoilers Alert], Danson’s Charles answers his phone from private investigator Julie, played by Lilah Richcreek Estrada. “I can’t believe I’m saying this but I have another job for you,” she says.

“Say no more,” replies Charles before hanging up the phone. “Hey, sorry I do need you to say more but whatever it is, I’m in,” he adds as he calls her back.

The setup is designed for a second season.

One week after breaking audience records by televising either Logan or Jake Paul (Truly, I couldn’t care less) pummeling Mike Tyson in the ring, Netflix is delivering a much more compassionate portrait of the challenges of aging and the dangers of elder abuse.

It will be easy to dub the Mike Schur-created A Man on the Inside as Only Robberies at the Nursing Home — count how many of your friendly neighborhood TV critics make that identical joke. But it wouldn’t be inappropriate, and it also wouldn’t be a criticism. It would actually be high praise.

Like Only Murders in the Building, A Man on the Inside is a semi-comic look at people who combat loneliness by thrusting their lives into an established genre that they adore. It’s a perfect star vehicle for, simultaneously, its beloved leading man and its impeccably cast ensemble.

Indeed, Jake Kasdan’s Red One plays so unabashedly like a mega-budget remake of the Majors-starring Night the Reindeer Died made-for-tv movie featured in Richard Donner’s Scrooged that Amazon might owe Paramount Pictures a royalty check.

Kasdan and screenwriter Chris Morgan certainly commit to the bit, but there aren’t enough memorable moments here to make Red One a holiday classic. And, ultimately, what’s most surprising here is that the little that does stick stems from moments where the film is as serious as a heart attack about the most fantastical elements of its premise.
