An animator, director, screenwriter, executive producer, and songwriter, Sugar is best known for creating Steven Universe, the acclaimed animated series that ran for five seasons from 2013-2019, securing GLAAD and Peabody Awards, as well as numerous Emmy and Annie Award nominations. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav's great HBO Max purge continues to send ripples throughout the entertainment industry. Not only are fans annoyed that the highly-anticipated DC Extended Universe film "Batgirl," beloved episodes of "Sesame Street," and a bevy of animated series are no longer on the books for the streamer, but the company is burning bridges left and right with creators.
According to a new report from The Wrap, there is a "deep distrust" among the creative talent in the industry when it comes to Wbd at the moment. One anonymous source told them that "the entire company is coming off as distressed. The messaging both inside the company and externally is 'Stay away or get out if you can.'"
Naturally, the bulk of the pushback has been from those involved in the animation industry. HBO Max's animated selection probably took the heaviest hit from Zaslav's edict...

Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch has revealed a number of the notes he said he received from Disney regarding the age-appropriateness of the show’s pitched content.
As part of a series of threads celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the animated series, which ran from 2012 to 2016 on Disney Channel, the Gravity Falls creator — who in 2018 publicly made the jump from Disney to Netflix with a multi-year overall deal to produce both kids and adult animation — tweeted a four-minute narrated video detailing requests to remove or edit specific jokes, sequences and character interactions.
Hirsch said the notes were provided to him and the Gravity Falls team by the studio’s Standards and Practices department, which at a TV network is responsible for ensuring programming adheres to the moral, ethical and legal standards of the station it airs on.

With negotiations set to begin Tuesday for a new Animation Guild contract, more than 2,600 industry figures have signed a petition calling for pay equity for color stylists, the animation industry’s only predominantly female craft, whose artists set the look, lighting and palette of cartoons.
The 3,500-member Animation Guild, Iatse Local 839, hasn’t struck the industry since 1983, but leaders told their members recently that a strike this time around “is always a possibility, if not a probability.” The guild’s talks are separate from the recently concluded negotiations for a new film and TV contract covering some 43,000 members of Iatse’s 13 West Coast studio locals.
The petition, organized by the Animation Guild’s Color Stylist Committee, is yet another sign of the growing movement for gender pay equity in Hollywood’s historically female-majority crafts. Steven Universe is one of our favorite cartoons ever and so we were really excited to get to interview them at Comic Con.
We talked to Zach Callison (who is not only the voice of Steven, but also of Prince James in Sofia the First), Ian Jones-Quartey (storyboarded/animator), Michaela Dietz (Amethyst), Deedee Magno Hall (Pearl….who Anya has been singing along to since she was 2 years old — no kidding, Deedee was Jasmine in the Aladdin Spectacular at Disney’s California Adventure), Estelle (Garnet), and Rebecca Sugar, the show’s composer & creator, who incidentally was shattering glass ceilings as the first woman to independently create a series for Cartoon Network! What’s really cool about Rebecca, as you’ll find out in our interview is that she’s a bit of a musical theatre geek like us. She not only got a song idea from Sweeney Todd, but she quotes Bob Fosse too.

“Do you know how many children I see every day who’ve cut off their faces playing with swords? None! Because they all have parents who love them and who don’t let them play around with deadly weapons like some sort of gang member!”
Strong art direction can make even a mediocre episode of Steven Universe sing, and while ‘Nightmare Hospital’ offers thin plot and implausible characterization, it also dishes out one of the most visually immersive episodes the series has done to date. The long, warped corridors of the titular hospital buzz with uneven fluorescent lighting while rapid footsteps echo through the gloom. Greens, browns, beiges, and greys blend into an inhospitable but uncomfortably naturalistic palette that makes everyone look simultaneously ill and like an interloper in a hushed mausoleum. Hallways stretch on forever, distorted by perspective. Figures rush through enormous spaces as though nervous about lingering too long.
