If you were to join Gene Graham’s deeply human documentary “This One’s for the Ladies” as a chatty female character casually prepares heaps of food in her kitchen, you might think she’s gearing up for a family picnic. Well, you wouldn’t be far off — she is indeed cooking for a routine Thursday night assembly in Newark, N.J.; though, it’s not exactly your grandma’s potluck dinner. It is instead where hundreds of mostly black and brown women gather to feast their eyes on a group of black male strippers, who diffuse their entrancing charms through a dance routine, grinding and bending their appealingly toned bodies to indulge the ladies’ sexual fantasies.
The whole affair is vastly entertaining — and far from indecent or intimidating — but there is a reason why Graham earns that Nc-17 rating: The members, while mostly covered in fabric casings, are bountifully there.

Business picked up in a big way at the indie box office this weekend, as Amazon Studios’ “Late Night” led a slew of new films in limited release.
Opening on four screens in Los Angeles and New York ahead of its wide release next weekend, “Late Night” grossed just under $250,000 this weekend for a per screen average of $62,414. That passes “Echo in the Canyon” and its $58,826 average from two weeks ago for the highest limited release PSA of 2019, and the second highest for any 2019 film this year behind the $76,601 average for “Avengers: Endgame.”

Amazon Studios opened Sundance premiere Late Night, starring Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling, in four New York and L.A. locations Friday to a robust start. Directed by Nisha Ganatra from a script by Kaling, Late Night grossed an estimated $249,654 this weekend, for a $62,414 per-theater average.
That is the second-highest debut PTA of the year, following Avengers: Endgame, with a $76,601 average, though that title was in several thousand theaters. Greenwich Entertainment doc Echo In the Canyon had a $58,826 opening three-day PTA last month.
“I am excited because the market has been tough in general,” said Amazon Studios Head of Marketing & Distribution, Bob Berney Sunday morning. “I was at a lot of the screenings [in L.A.] this weekend and the reaction was very good. We moved the wide release back one week to give it an extra week of publicity and word-of-mouth and I think that was a good decision.”

Don’t be fooled by the Nc-17 rating; Gene Graham’s “This One’s for the Ladies” may be an uncensored documentary about the male strippers of Newark — and the women who love them — but giant penises have never seemed more gentle or less explicit. Hell, most of the time they’re sheathed in those silly black hoods that exotic dancers have to wear for modesty, and they don’t look like dicks so much as headless church bishops who are hiding some big secrets. This isn’t a smutty movie, or one that’s driven by empty titillation. Made in response to the lack of black representation in the original “Magic Mike,” but endowed with a similar (if more pointed) sensitivity towards economic struggle and collective strength, Graham’s film is drawn to the dingiest rec center in New Jersey because there’s something beautiful about what happens there every Thursday night.

The best description of director Gene Graham’s (“The Godfather of Disco”) stripper documentary, “This One’s for the Ladies,” comes from one of the film’s subjects, naughty dancer enthusiast Michele Moore, who says, in an exasperated tone, “It’s a lot.”
That’s an understatement because she’s referring to gyrating men who lay their penises on her head, twerk in her face, and grind up on the stage in front of an adoring crowd. It’s excessive, over-the-top, and somewhat uncomfortable, and yet she absolutely loves it. That kind of oxymoronic fascination prevalent among many fans is what Graham aims to explore in a film that winds up increasingly hallow and frustrating to watch.

So what do we have this week? Two looks at unusual superheroes. Two distinctly Nsfw teasers for some upcoming indies. Cate Blanchett goes missing. A stoner TV anthology returns. Thor: Ragnarok‘s Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth reunite and switch franchises from Marvel to MiB. Your best-of trailer round-up of the week.

Juried prizes were presented tonight at the 25th annual Swsw Film Festival. Jim Gaffigan, in Austin to represent the Miranda Bailey-directed ensemble comedy “You Can Choose Your Family,” presided as host. The venue was the Paramount Theatre, a 103-year-old landmark just blocks from the Texas Capitol.
SXSW will continue screening films through Saturday, when most of the festival’s audience awards recipients will be announced. The exception is for the headlining films, such as “A Quiet Place,” “Blockers,” and “Ready Player One” — those verdicts follows on March 19.
This year’s line-up comprised 256 total features and shorts, culled from 8,183 submissions. Best narrative feature “Thunder Road” was adapted from the namesake, one-take short that won a Grand Jury award at Sundance in 2016.
Lena Dunham’s “Tiny Furniture” (2010) and Destin Daniel Cretton’s “Short Term 12” (2013) are among the best-known past jury victors at SXSW. IndieWire’s Dana Harris helped choose the Louis Black “Lone Star” honoree,...
