After a lengthy search for a No.2 in the U.S., Netflix’s head of Global Television Bela Bajaria has reached within the company ranks. Peter Friedlander, who has been heading up the company’s new Spectacle/Event programming department, has been named Head of Ucan Scripted Series. Brian Wright, who has been heading its Overall Deals department, will exit.
In addition to having the drama and comedy teams, led by Jinny Howe & Renate Radford (drama) and Tracey Pakosta (comedy), report to him, Friedlander will also continue to oversee the Spectacle/Event programming department and will now also run the Overall Deals department.
A month after Bajaria took over as VP, Global TV last September, a move that led to the departure of long-time exec Cindy Holland, she restructured its U.S. programming team, leaving the head of U.S. series post vacant.

Netflix head of global TV Bela Bajaria has picked her head of U.S./Canada scripted series, promoting longtime creative exec Peter Friedlander to the role.
Brian Wright, Netflix’s head of overall deals who had overseen shows including “Stranger Things,” is leaving the company. Friedlander, most recently head of spectacle and event TV programming, is assuming oversight of the company’s partnerships with creative talent. That’s in addition to Friedlander’s duties leading Netflix’s U.S. comedy and drama teams and continuing to head the big-budget spectacle/event TV group.
Friedlander is one of Netflix’s longest-tenured creative execs after joining the company in October 2011. He was the first dedicated employee on the company’s original series team, starting with “House of Cards” and “Orange Is the New Black.”
Friedlander was the creative executive responsible for shepherding some of Netflix’s highest-profile series including “Black Mirror,” “Mindhunter,...

Netflix is expanding Peter Friedlander’s purview, naming him head of Ucan (that’s U.S. and Canada) scripted series.
As part of the move, Brian Wright, who oversaw the streaming service’s expansive overall deals, will exit the company. Friedlander will assume oversight of Wright’s team.
Friedlander has been with Netflix since 2011 and was most recently head of spectacle/event TV, which came as part of the reorganization under new global TV chief Bela Bajaria. Netflix had not had an executive in charge of U.S. originals since Cindy Holland left last year.
Prior to Netflix, Friedlander was an executive at Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone production company for more than eight years, serving as a producer on HBO’s “Big Love” and an executive on many of their feature films.
“Peter is an incredibly well-regarded and respected executive both inside and outside Netflix and is...
