1968 · San Francisco, California, USA

Biography

    • Robert Mailer Anderson is the author of the best-selling novel "Boonville," which was highly-acclaimed by critics and writers, including Norman Mailer, Carl Hiaasen, Jonathan Lethem, and William Gibson. He is also the author of the graphic novels "My Fairy Godfather" and "Windows on the World," and the play "The Death of Teddy Ballgame."

Anderson began his literary career at age fifteen as a contributor to The Anderson Valley Advertiser (which The Wall Street Journal described as "the best small town newspaper in the United States."), where his uncle, Bruce Anderson, was editor and publisher. His short story, "Briley Boy," was included in the anthology San Francisco Noir. He was a trustee of the SFJAZZ board where he lead the $65 million dollar capital campaign to build the SFJAZZ Center. Anderson named the campaign "The World is Listening" and the phrase was later used to promote the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. As a music producer, Anderson has been nominated for two Grammys, one Latin Grammy, and won two NAACP Image Awards. He is a member of PEN Oakland, a three-time San Francisco Library Laureate, and in 2016 he was presented the San Francisco Arts Medallion for his outstanding leadership in the arts. Anderson was named the Colonial Standard Bearer for the 2013 Selkirk Common Riding in Selkirk, Scotland. In 2020, Anderson was appointed to the California Humanities Board of Directors by Governor Gavin Newsom. Among his other artistic endeavors, Anderson was co-owner of Quotidian art gallery, which SF Gate tagged as "the always envelope-pushing Quotidian." In that spirit, he designed an anti-Iraq War poster campaign in June 2004, juxtaposing an Abu Graib prisoner, the American Flag, and the slogan "Got Democracy?" The poster is now part of the collection of The Smithsonian Institution and the Center for the Study of Political Graphics in Los Angeles.
