- Lived many years in various Latin American countries. Is completely fluent in English and Spanish.

- Traveled by land in 2004 from South Carolina to Panama with his mother and four siblings. He and his older brother sang on buses to earn food money. After two months in Panama City, a stranger bought plane tickets for all six to fly to Lima, Peru.
- Almost drowned at the age of nine off the coast of San Jose, Guatemala after being pulled out by the undertow. After over two hours of treading water he was rescued by three locals whom his mother paid to swim out.
- Studied the Meisner technique at Playhouse West.
- Is the second cousin of Mark Foster of the band Foster the People.
- While serving on the Tech Team of the Oasis Church, he was given the nicknames "Philip the 3rd" and "P3", due to there being two other well-known Philips at the church.
