Contrary to popular belief, Laina is actually a good singer, but she showed it briefly in only a few videos. She used the off-key, rap-like singing just for comedic effect.

In 2012, she gained popularity on the internet for a video called "JB Fanvideo". Initially intended as an entry for a contest (Justin Bieber promoted his new fragrance "Girlfriend", and he asked his fans to sing the song on video, but with altered lyrics and using the word "boyfriend" instead), she uploaded it on YouTube and shared it on Facebook with her friends. After that, she and her roommates watched the likes and comments grow on her Facebook page for a while, which reached about several dozens of them. The video had attracted massive attention on the internet overnight. Her first memory of that day was when, in the next morning, one of her roommates turned her laptop to Laina, saying "You're a meme". On the screen was a screenshot taken from the video, which is now known as the Overly Attached Girlfriend meme (a Reddit user was later credited for the creation of it). Overwhelmed by the response to her video, she continued her character with a parody of Carly Rae Jepsen's hit "Call Me Maybe". Both of her videos went on to reach #1 and #2 in the YouTube trends. This inspired her to create more content for her channel, which evolved into videos such as sketches, monologues, vlogs and collaborations with other YouTubers.

During the Social Star Awards 2013, she competed in a staring contest against Jessica Alba and won.

She appeared in a commercial for Samsung, RealPlayer Cloud and AutoTrader.com.
