In “Prom Dates,” two high school besties are sent reeling after their carefully orchestrated plans for the future take an abrupt turn, forcing them on a wild overnight adventure across town. If this set-up sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because director Kim O. Nguyen and screenwriter D.J. Mausner have combined a handful of ingredients from “Booksmart” and mixed them with some of the farcical odyssey of “After Hours.” However, unlike this teen raunch-com’s brilliantly conceived inspirations, its main friendship dynamic and ensuing shenanigans fail to resonate due to sloppy character construction and a cadre of cringe-worthy circumstances.
As innocent middle schoolers, Hannah (Millie Thorpe) and Jess (Hailey Philip) took a blood oath – one that went hilariously awry – to make their prom night the best night of their lives. But as seniors, the besties are finding that making good on their pact might prove difficult. Hannah (Julia Lester) is struggling with her sexuality,...

Covid-19 doesn’t seem to exist in the world of “Pivoting,” but it doesn’t have to for the show’s premise to ring true to life as we now know it. While the idea of seizing the day is nothing new, reevaluating your life and direction in light of a loved one’s death is, to say the least, a pretty relatable concept right now. For creator Liz Astrof to tackle that scenario, not to mention through a comedic lens, is a sharp and timely idea for a series, even if it’s not entirely clear what that series could look like further down the line.

ABC has canceled freshman drama Emergence and sophomore comedies Bless This Mess, Single Parents and Schooled as well as the new Kids Say The Darndest Things revival with Tiffany Haddish.
This cancelations are part of a big round of renewal decisions at the Disney-owned network today, which included the pickup of 13 current series for its 2020-21 slate.
While the cancellation of Emergence was considered likely, bubble comedies Single Parents, Bless This Mess and The Goldbergs’ spinoff Schooled all getting the axe was surprising, especially given the auspices involved. Two other ABC bubble shows, freshmen For Life and The Baker and the Beauty, remain in limbo.
The coronavirus pandemic grounding Hollywood production and throwing the 2020 pilot season into chaos was expected to benefit bubble series. While ABC has only ordered two new shows straight-to-series, Big Sky, from David E. Kelley and Call Your Mother, from Kari Lizer, the network, possibly encouraged...

The Simple Life alumna Nicole Richie is returning to the farm in an upcoming multi-episode arc opposite Lake Bell and Dax Shepard on ABC’s Bless This Mess.
Richie will play Sierra Rio’s NYC Bff, who would probably tell you she’s from Brooklyn, but she’s a spoiled Upper-East-Sider through and through. And she cannot wait to host her wedding at Mike and Rio’s “super rustic, kind of gross” farm. Her character will be introduced in early February 2020.

ABC has picked up additional episodes of “American Housewife” and “Bless This Mess,” the network announced on Thursday.
Both shows will run for an additional six episodes this year, with “American Housewife” currently in its fourth season and “Bless This Mess” in its second.
“‘Bless This Mess’ has quickly become a fan favorite, due in large part to the expert wit of co-creators Lake Bell and Elizabeth Meriwether, and our incredibly talented and charismatic cast,” ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke said. “This series exquisitely captures a witty and warm look into the close-knit communities of America’s heartland, and we are so excited to deliver more stories from ‘Bucksnort’ to the masses.”

ABC has picked up more episodes of comedies American Housewife, currently in its fourth season, and sophomore Bless This Mess. Each will produce six additional episodes, for what ABC calls full-season orders.
American Housewife had originally received a 15-episode order, which will now go up to 21 episodes and the show’s total to 97 episodes. The pickup is a vote of confidence to the comedy, which has been an utility player for ABC over the years and a solid Friday anchor this fall.
Bless This Mess was a midseason entry last season, so its Season 2 order was for 13 episodes. The back order brings that up to 19.

Oinker Alert: season two of ABC’s Bless This Mess will include a pig.
“We are entering the world of pigs, that’s all I’ll say,” offered Elizabeth Meriwether who, along with series star Lake Bell, executive produces the serie that follows the adventures of a newlywed couple whose plan to ditch big-city living for a simpler life in Nebraska goes awry in pretty much every way possible.
Added Meriwether mysteriously: “There also may be some piglets. You can’t have enough animals on a show that’s set in the Nebraska farmland.”
Sunday’s TCA panel with the show creators and cast appropriately took place outdoors at Sunset Ranch in Hollywood’s Beachwood Canyon, with plenty of horses and, yes, a pig on hand.
Meriwether and Bell appeared on the panel with cast members Pam Grier, Ed Begley Jr., David Koechner, Lennon Parham and Jt Neal.

Exclusive: Single-camera comedy Bless This Mess has recast a series regular as it is starting production on its six-episode midseason order by ABC.
Child actress Madison Curry, currently seen in Jordan Peele’s Us, has been cast as Constance Terry’s (Pam Grier) daughter Cherry. A decision was made at the time the Bless This Mess pilot was picked up to series by ABC to retool the character of Cherry from a teenager, played in the Fox pilot by Christina Offley, to a young child. That led to the recasting. Cherry’s scenes in the pilot were reshot Friday, with production on the rest of the episodes starting today. To mark the first day of shooting, the cast, including Curry, took a group photo to post on Twitter. You can see it below.
