Star Trek’s 6 Defiant Starships Explained
Image
A half dozen notable Star Trek starships have carried the name Defiant. The USS Enterprise is the most recognizable starship in Star Trek, and some Star Trek TV series have been named after their eponymous ships like Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Discovery. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was named for its titular space station but, in season 3, DS9 also gained its own starship, the USS Defiant.

Starships named Defiant originated in Star Trek: The Original Series. However, it is Star Trek: Deep Space Nine that turned the name "Defiant" into a legacy comparable to the various starships named USS Enterprise. Most of Starfleet's Defiant starships come from the Defiant Class established on DS9, but one Defiant made an impact fighting for the Terrans in the Mirror Universe. Finally, Star Trek's newest Defiant Class starship has a mission to explore and protect Star Trek's expansive multiverse, itself.

With Marvel Talent at the Wheel, a Long-Lost Comic Is Gearing Up a Comeback Nobody Expected
Image
With former Marvel talent at the wheel, a long-lost comic book universe will make a comeback few saw coming. Of the many comic book publishers to emerge during the boom of the early 1990s, Defiant Comics was one of the most innovative. Defiant was heading towards great things, but the market crashed before they could deliver their magnum opus, but now, 30 years later, it is returning to print. Jake Weaver, Defiant Comics fan and host of the Midnight on Earth podcast, has launched a Kickstarter for Schism: Be Careful What You Dream. Fans can choose from two different formats: four, single issues (in print or digital) or a deluxe hardcover compiling the singles. Many key creative personnel from Defiant’s heyday, such as Shooter, JJ Jackson and David Lapham are involved in Schism’s production.

Their involvement ensures Schism stays faithful to Defiant’s original mission.

Weaver has stated that...

Star Trek: Everything We Know About What Happened To The USS Enterprise-e
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

At the end of the 1994 film "Star Trek: Generations," the tried-and-true U.S.S. Enterprise-d crash-landed into Veridian III after a run-in with a sneaky Klingon vessel. The ship was damaged beyond repair, and the crew walked away, completely unsentimental about the ship's destruction. They were merely happy to be alive. In the 1996 follow-up film, "Star Trek: First Contact," the same crew was gathered on board the all-new U.S.S. Enterprise-e, a Sovereign-class vessel that was a bit smaller, but faster and much better armed. The crew stayed on board the Enterprise-e through the events of 2002's "Star Trek: Nemesis," the fourth and final film to star the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" characters.

The Enterprise-e was also severely damaged at the end of "Star Trek: Nemesis," although it seemed that this time, it could be repaired. After the events of "Nemesis,...

Spock Knew His Death Was Coming in Star Trek, And One Heartbreaking Moment Proves He Predicted It
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek: Defiant #21!

Spock knew his time in the Star Trek universe was coming to a close, and one heartbreaking moment proves he predicted it. After a distinguished career in Starfleet and as an ambassador, Spock found himself hurled into an alternate universe, where his story eventually came to an end. In Star Trek: Defiant #21, Spock is seemingly aware of how he will die, making a prediction that will sadly come true.

Star Trek: Defiant #21 is written by Christopher Cantwell and drawn by Angel Unzueta. Spock has just helped Worf and the crew of the Defiant turn back a Romulan invasion of an agrarian world. As the dust settles, Spock reflects on the incident, and his life as a whole. Spock muses that we “burn on,” in a constant state of flux, even if we perceive it as static. Spock’s philosophical train ultimately arrives at...

Star Trek: DS9’s Captain Sisko Triples Kirk’s Love Of The Enterprise
Image
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) tripled Captain James T. Kirk's (William Shatner) singular devotion to the Starship Enterprise on Star Trek: The Original Series. Sisko commanded the Deep Space Nine space station for seven seasons of DS9, fending off all manner of hostile aliens, interstellar crises, and the all-encompassing Dominion War that nearly toppled the United Federation of Planets. Through it all, Captain Sisko achieved a remarkable work-life balance that eluded Captain Kirk.

Star Trek: The Original Series set Captain Kirk as the gold standard of starship Captains. Kirk led the Starship Enterprise on a historic five-year mission, interacting with countless aliens, solving dilemmas, and saving the galaxy. To accomplish this feat, Kirk fully committed himself to the USS Enterprise and his crew. Jim may have enjoyed numerous human and alien lovers, but the Captain of the Enterprise denied himself a long-term relationship and a family.

Star Trek Shares Spock's True Feelings About Worf, Leaving Us All in Tears
Image
Idw's line of ongoing Star Trek comics have already made many stellar contributions to the franchise's sprawling lore, but perhaps its most touching thread has been the deepening of Spock and Worf's friendship – as Spock openly affirms that the Klingon is his last living friend in the latest issue of the Defiant series.

Star Trek: Defiant #21 – written by Christopher Cantwell, with art by Angel Unzueta – solidifies the connection between two of Trek’s most beloved characters, with Spock going as far as to say their relationship is “no less strong” than the one between him and his oldest allies.

The development of this bond across multiple generations of Trek has been pivotal to making Defiant a definitive portrayal of both Worf and Spock – a duo fans didn’t realize they needed until it was given to them.

As A Long-Lived Vulcan, Spock Has Had Many Friendships Come And Go – Now,...

The first episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 8 was plotted in 2015
Image
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ended in 1999 on a cliffhanger of sorts with Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) leaving his wife and unborn child to join the Prophets. Though he promised to return, that promise has gone unfullfilled, unless you count Idw Publishing's current series of comics that has not only brought Sisko back but given him adventures galore.

In 2015, however, there was a different kind of adventure worked out in idea form. Ida Steven Behr, the showrunner for the series, gathered his team of writers, which included Rene Echevarria, Hans Beimler, Robert Hewitt Wolfe, and Ronald D. Moore, and together, they plotted out what could have been the first episode of the 8th season of Deep Space Nine. [Via Screenrant] On the Deep Space Nine documentary, What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Deep Space Nine, Behr revealed what they envisioned.

The new series was set twenty years after the...

Why The Star Trek The Next Generation Movies Ignored Two Major DS9 Plot Points
Image
"Star Trek" fans really had it all in the mid-1990s. The "Star Trek: The Next Generation" movies carried on the adventures of the Enterprise at the cinemas, while "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek: Voyager" told new stories of Starfleet on the television each week. It was truly an amazing time to be a "Star Trek" fan, although occasionally it could feel like "The Next Generation" got preferential treatment above the other two series. That was especially true when it came to how the events of "Deep Space Nine" were depicted in the "Next Generation" movies.

You see, the events of "Star Trek: Insurrection" take place during the Dominion War, which is the main arc of the final few seasons of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." Lieutenant Commander Worf (Michael Dorn) went from serving on the Enterprise to the space station Deep Space Nine when "The Next Generation" went off the air,...

Captain Pike Turns A Star Trek Suicide Maneuver Into Strange New Worlds Rescue
Image
In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) attempts a USS Enterprise maneuver that usually means suicide. Strange New Worlds season 2 ended with a cliffhanger as the Enterprise faced off against multiple Gorn ships, including a destroyer. As Captain Pike contemplates his next move, Admiral Robert April (Adrian Holmes) orders the Enterprise to withdraw, even if that means leaving several crew members trapped on the Gorn ship. Pike stops, unwilling to leave his people behind, but unsure how to proceed, just before the words "to be continued" appear on the screen.

With the life of Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano) hanging in the balance, Captain Pike faces his very own version of the Kobayashi Maru, but he's not facing it alone. At New York Comic-Con 2024, Paramount+ debuted a new clip from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 that reveals how Pike and his Starship Enterprise crew...

Star Trek's Wildest Storyline Cloned A Main Character – And Then Promptly Forgot It Happened
Image
One of the best things about "Star Trek" is that it can get really, really weird. Science fiction stories always lend themselves to bizarre situations, as the technology of the future allows us to explore ideas that would be totally impossible in our own world. Time travel alone has given the various "Star Trek" crews all kinds of (entertaining) headaches, but in a season 6 episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," a teleporter accident introduced a fantastic new headache for the crew of Captain Picard's (Patrick Stewart) Enterprise: Thomas Riker.

After a teleporter accident during an away mission while William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Potemkin, he was rematerialized as two separate Rikers, and one of them ended up stranded for eight years before reappearing in the episode "Second Chances," claiming to be the "real" William Riker. Doppelgangers from teleporter accidents had happened before, like...

Siskos Defiant Had A Revolutionary Feature Star Trek: DS9 Only Used Once
Image
The USS Defiant had a forgotten holo-filter, used once to deceive Cardassians with a distant disguise. Star Trek's Gene Roddenberry initially disapproved of such covert technology on Starfleet ships. The Defiant's holo-filter was limited and not very convincing, leading to its one-time use and eventual abandonment.

The USS Defiant, commanded by Captain Benjamin Sisko in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine had a revolutionary new starship feature that the show swiftly forgot about. Introduced in DS9 season 3, the USS Defiant was a starship of many firsts. It was Starfleet's first warship in decades, initially built to battle the Borg threat but deployed to tackle the Dominion. The USS Defiant also had a cloaking device fitted, which was authorized by the Romulan Star Empire for use in the Gamma Quadrant. Nog's Amputation In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Could Have Been Much More Violent
Image
In the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "The Siege of Ar-558," the U.S.S. Defiant is dispatched to a remote outpost where Federation soldiers have captured a Dominion communications relay. This was deep into the seasons-long Dominion War story ark, and "Deep Space Nine" was becoming increasingly bleak. When the Defiant arrives, they find that over 100 Federation soldiers have been killed in trying to keep the array out of the hands of encroaching enemies.

Ensign Nog (Aron Eisenberg) is part of the Defiant's team, and he has never seen combat before. The phaser fire and landmine explosions terrify him, and Nog ends up losing a leg in the battle. In "Star Trek," medical science is advanced enough to grow new legs without any issue, but Nog's sudden limb loss was horrifying. Two episodes later, in "It's Only a Paper Moon," Nog was back on Deep Space Nine, recovering with his new leg.

Sisko Had A Bond With His Defiant No Other Star Trek Captain Can Match
Image
Captain Benjamin Sisko had a personal connection to the USS Defiant, which played a key role in protecting DS9 and the Alpha Quadrant from the Dominion. The USS Defiant was a rarity in Starfleet history, as it was specifically built with military intentions to fight wars and protect utopian ideals. Captain Sisko had a unique role in designing and building the USS Defiant, unlike previous Star Trek captains who were handed command of their ships.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) had a bond with the USS Defiant that no other Star Trek captain can match. Although DS9 was never meant to have a starship, its creation was necessitated by the Dominion War arc. In Star Trek: DS9 season 2, episode 26, the Jem'Hadar destroyed an Odyssey-class starship, the USS Odyssey, and it was deemed that the audience would not accept Deep Space Nine being able to...

Adam Scott Was In Star Trek? First Contact Role Explained
Image
Adam Scott played a small role as a Starfleet Officer in Star Trek: First Contact, which was one of his earliest film roles. Prior to this, Adam Scott had limited film and television credits and was still an up-and-coming actor. Although he originally auditioned for a different role, Adam Scott's character in First Contact played a crucial part in the Tng reunion and brought Worf back to the Enterprise.

Actor Adam Scott's best-known role is Parks & Recreation's Ben Wyatt, a genuinely relatable Star Trek fan who not-so-secretly pens Star Trek: The Next Generation fan-fiction, which makes it pretty interesting that Adam Scott is actually in Star Trek: First Contact, in one of his earliest film roles. It's a smaller part with a few lines that's equivalent to a cameo and comes relatively early in First Contact's runtime. That may seem unusual given how famous Adam Scott is now,...

Star Trek: Enterprise's Hoshi Sato Has A Grim Connection To Captain Kirk
Image
The 2001 series "Star Trek: Enterprise" takes place about a century before the events of the original "Star Trek," and a lot of the technologies Trekkies took for granted hadn't been invented yet. Transporters, for instance, weren't yet safe for human use. Starships didn't have shields and instead were equipped with specialized hull plating that needed to be polarized to deflect phase cannon blasts. Instead of tractor beams, the Enterprise had grappling hooks. And, because Earth hadn't yet encountered too many alien species, there wasn't yet a workable universal translator.

That's where Ensign Hoshi Sato (Linda Park) came in. Ensign Sato was a language wunderkind whose ear for language and knack for syntax proved invaluable for making first contact with alien species. She was, however, only 22 years old when she joined the crew of the Enterprise and, like the rest of the crew, had no deep space experience. Ensign Sato was...

Worf Reveals His Bounty Hunter Crew's Elite Combat Advantage (That Starfleet Lacks)
Image
The crew of the Defiant has a tactical advantage over other Starfleet crews - they can all beam off the ship at once, as the uniquely small five-person crew can all fit on a single transporter pad. The latest arc of Defiant features Captain Worf and his crew acting as off-the-books bounty hunters for Starfleet, with their first target being former Borg Hugh, familiar to viewers of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Picard. The small size of the Defiant's crew could be a lifesaving advantage in a future dangerous situation, as they can all escape on one transporter pad if necessary.

One of the best things about Idw's Star Trek comic book renaissance has been the company's Defiant ongoing series, which has featured Captain Worf and a misfit crew aboard Starfleet's premiere battleship – and as the series begins its latest arc, the small crew have discovered one tactical...

In Star Trek: Defiant #9, Spock acknowledges he could never live up to Kirk's reputation as Starfleet's greatest captain, but that he would not be able to control his desire to – leading him to never pursue the captain's chair. Spock suggests to Worf that there are more important things than being the captain of a starship, and that because of Kirk's influence on his life, he chooses to devote himself to greater causes. Spock's friendship with Kirk, and time under his leadership, made the Vulcan become the best version of himself, and helped him achieve greatness in his own way.

Star Trek Reveals Exactly How Many Starfleet Regulations Kirk Broke as Captain

Warning! Spoilers for Star Trek: Defiant #5!

Idw's Star Trek line of comics continue to expand the franchise's lore in a variety of different ways, including everything from cataclysms with galaxy-spanning implications, to small quirks of Starfleet history – such as putting a precise number of Starfleet regulations Captain James T. Kirk broke during his fabled career, from a source no less authoritative than his friend and loyal crewmember, Spock.

Star Trek: Defiant #5 – written by Christopher Cantwell, with art by Angel Unzueta – finds Spock comforting Worf, who feels he has failed his son Alexander, and failed Starfleet, suggesting that his, "real problem began long before [he] became captain of a stolen ship."

Warning! Spoilers for Star Trek: Defiant #5!

Idw's Star Trek line of comics has delivered some exciting, and at times unexpected, pairings of iconic characters from across the history of the franchise. The renegade crew at the heart of Star Trek: Defiant has served up some particularly interesting combinations – including a surprisingly supportive dynamic between Spock and Data's evil twin brother, the android Lore, which has the potential to make them Trek's greatest odd couple.

Star Trek: Defiant #5 – written by Christopher Cantwell, with art by Angel Unzueta – presents the latest in a series of moments that have found Spock and Lore working together.
