Following a recent scandal alleging that the folk artist and activist Buffy Sainte-Marie had fabricated her Canadian Indigenous roots, the Polaris Music Prize and Juno Awards have revoked honors bestowed on the musician.

The release of a 2023 documentary produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) called Sainte-Marie’s Indigenous identity into question. A fervent activist for Indigenous causes, as reflected in songs like “Now That the Buffalo’s Gone,” Sainte-Marie had long claimed that she was born and raised on a Cree reservation in Saskatchewan. However, the CBC program uncovered she was in fact born in Massachusetts.

Earlier this year, Sainte-Marie, was stripped of her Order of Canada appointment. Now, the Polaris Music Prize and the Juno Awards have decided that her collected accolades from both institutions will be rescinded, due to her inability to provide tangible proof of her Canadian and/or Indigenous identity.

No reason was given for the termination, but the notice was signed by Ken MacKillop, secretary general of the Order of Canada. The move, however, follows a 2023 investigation by the CBC’s The Fifth Estate series that alleged Sainte-Marie had been fraudulently posing as Native over the course of her 60-year career.

No official reason for the move has been given, however, with officials telling The Toronto Star that they do “not comment on the specifics of termination cases.”

Sainte-Marie has been an icon around the world since the 1960s for her music, Indigenous fashion, and outspoken support for indigenous lives and affairs. But a bombshell report by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 2023 seemingly revealed that, contrary to official biographical information — which claimed she was born on the Piapot Cree First Nations Reserve in Saskatchewan — she was actually born to white parents in Massachusetts, and may have falsely invented her indigenous heritage.

Turtles All The Way Down, adapted from John Green’s best-selling novel, is finally coming to UK TV screens this month.

John Green’s book The Fault In Our Stars and its film adaptation was a huge teen phenomenon and, in all honesty, it broke my heart too at the ripe age of 23. Green’s other books, Paper Towns and Looking For Alaska have also since been adapted for screens big and small.

The latest adaptation is Turtles All The Way Down, which has just premiered on Max in the US. So far, there hasn’t been a UK release date for the film, but we’ve just received some good news in our inbox. The film, directed by Hannah Marks, will be released on Sky Cinema on the 26th May.

Hannah Marks started acting when she was 6 years old, after seeing her mother’s acting reel. Both the film and novel center on Aza Holmes, a 16-year-old character who is still learning to live with obsessive-compulsive disorder (Ocd). In particular, Aza finds it difficult to navigate her obsessive thinking inescapable thought spirals that are often triggered by thoughts of microorganisms or germs.

“Turtles All the Way Down” was always going to be a tricky movie to get right. Based on a popular, well-reviewed 2017 book of the same name by YA maestro John Green, the story follows Aza (Isabela Merced) a girl with sometimes-crippling Ocd — in addition to regular Being a Teen problems. It’s a beautiful story, but not one that necessarily screams blockbuster.

Green himself — who oversaw adaptions of his work like “Paper Towns” and “Looking for Alaska” and serves as an EP on “Turtles” — was hesitant about selling the rights to adapt it, he recalled to IndieWire.

“It was hard for me to imagine that a good movie could be made from the book,” Green said. “Also, Hollywood has a long history of depicting Ocd terribly. But because the producers were people I had such confidence in, I felt like we could at least give it a shot.”

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced the movies, TV shows, and live sports that will be available on the Max streaming service in May. The Max May 2024 lineup includes season three of the comedy series Hacks, the drama series Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, and the unscripted series Thirst with Shay Mitchell.
