The son of Edward Joseph Dwight, a Negro league baseball player in Kansas City, Dwight was a USAF test pilot and an engineer, who was selected to be the first black astronaut during the Kennedy Administration but this was thwarted by racist leaders in the space program. He later also became an accomplished sculptor and artist.
