Gully Wells, features editor at Conde Nast Traveler, has been in the center of London, Paris, Oxford, and New York’s intellectual set, having globe-trotted in her youth with her mother Dee Wells, a rebellious American journalist, and her stepfather A. J. Ayer, a preeminent Oxford philosopher. In her new book, The House In France: A Memoir (Knopf), Wells recollects spending time with Iris Murdoch, Martin Amis, Bertrand Russell, and Bobby Kennedy and summers at La Migua—her mother’s cherished farmhouse in Provence.
