The long awaited big screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's "Into the Woods" finally hits theaters on Christmas Day, and judging by the reviews so far, the consensus is it ain't half bad. Of course, the fact that the film made AFI's top 10 of 2014 list, earned a Golden Globe nod for Best Film - Musical or Comedy (granted, a given) and has also earned a slew of best supporting actress nominations for Meryl Streep (not a given) should have been a big hint. Still, it's slightly surprising considering director Rob Marshall's woeful track record since his feature debut, "Chicago," won the Best Picture Oscar almost 12 years ago. Whether it can crack this year's Best Picture race remains to be seen (it would need to be a pretty massive hit to get the Academy's attention), but it will receive a significant number of nominations on Jan. 15.
