I'm an unapologetic fan of Nicolas Cage. He's every bit as fascinating as his schizophrenic career and his infamously over-the-top performances. So with that in mind, I'm uncertain about how his new film The Runner will ultimately pan out, even after watching its first trailer. In writer-director Austin Stark's R-rated drama, Cage plays idealistic Louisiana politician, Colin Price, who finds his personal and political life in turmoil thanks to a sex scandal. In the aftermath of the 2010 Bp oil spill, Price finds an opportunity to turn his life around by standing up for the people he represents. Here's the thing, this apparent mash-up of House of Cards meets Treme could actually be a compelling story ... if the acting, directing, and editing all come together.
