Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach are credited for the inspiration of modern day dirt bikes. In 1885, they invented a gas-powered bike and called it Reitwagen, which means “riding car.” It’s Soichiro Honda, however, who’s credited as the true inventor of dirt bikes for motocross racing.

Dirt bikes became popular in the 1960s as men, women, retired folks, and children used them for going back and forth off-road areas that are inaccessible to cars and regular motorcycles.
