Marisa Abela shines with a luminous performance that truly embodies Amy Winehouse, and her voice is excellent. Unfortunately, Back to Black film lacks depth, focusing more on style than substance in Winehouse's story. It fails to portray her interior world, starting too late in her life and focusing only on the surface. Back to Black has an excellent cast though, especially the always great Eddie Marsan.

Amy Winehouse took the music world by storm with soulful vocals and an electric persona unlike any female artist of her generation. Her piercings, tattoos, sultry eyeliner, and trademark beehive hairstyle complemented a booze, sex, and drug-fueled lifestyle that made her constant tabloid fodder. Back to Black, a biopic directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and named after Winehouse's iconic Grammy-winning album, captures her meteoric rise to fame and equally tragic death at a shocking 27-years-old.

However, there's little depth or true insight to a Wikipedia-styled narrative that rings hollow throughout.
