The Mummy Prequel Reportedly in the Works at Universal

The Mummy may be the next Universal Monsters story to be revisited. A new installment of the franchise is reportedly in the works, but it will be going further back in the past.
Film insider Daniel Richtman has reported that a prequel to The Mummy is now in development at Universal. Also noted is that Wes Tooke is writing the screenplay. It's not clear, however, which version of The Mummy this new film will be serving as a prequel. Given the cult status of the 1999 version with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, that film seems to be more likely than the 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise, which was very heavily panned. Potentially, the film could even be a prequel to the classic 1932 film which starred Boris Karloff as the titular monster. In any case, the news hasn't been officially confirmed at this time.
